Bulletin 4394 - Exotic Diseases - Sheep And Goats, Agriculture Western Australia

Bulletins 4000 -

An exotic disease is a disease which does not occur in Australia.

If an exotic disease did occur in Australia it would cause production losses, stock deaths and stop exports of primary production. When export markets are lost they can only be re-established once it is proven the disease is eradicated. Some exotic diseases may be transmitted to humans

Collaborative Distance Education In Power Engineering, Anil Pahwa, Shelli K. Starrett, Kraig J. Olejniczak, S. D. Sudhoff, Mariesa Crow

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

This paper presents a perspective on offering "shared-courses," or courses simultaneously offered at two or more universities via various distance educational frameworks. Over a three year duration, two senior/graduate level courses were jointly developed and offered to the students at the University of Missouri--Rolla, the University of Arkansas, Kansas State University, and Purdue University. This paper discusses the various distance educational technologies including two-way audio/visual via ISDN line, video-tapes, and web-based conferencing. Both instructor and student reactions to these mediums are included. Pedagogical methods appropriate for these mediums are outlined. The paper concludes with recommendations and strategies for engineering institutions …

Estimating Animal Abundance Using Noninvasive Dna Sampling: Promise And Pitfalls, L. Scott Mills, J. J. Ciatta, K. P. Lair, M. K. Schwartz, D. A. Tallmon

Wildlife Biology Faculty Publications

Advances in molecular biology offer promise to the study of demographic characteristics of rare or hard-re-capture species, because individuals can now be identified through noninvasive sampling such as fecal collection or hair snags. However, individual genotyping using such methods currently leads to a novel problem that we call a "shadow effect," because some animals not captured previously are believed to be recaptures due to their DNA profile being an indistinguishable shadow of previously captured animals. We evaluate the impact of the shadow effect on the two methods most commonly used in applied population ecology to estimate the size of closed …

Numerical Aspects Of Discrete And Continuum Hybrid Models In Cell Biology, J. C. Dallon Feb 2000

Numerical Aspects Of Discrete And Continuum Hybrid Models In Cell Biology, J. C. Dallon

Faculty Publications

In this paper we introduce a method of modeling which mixes continuum and discrete variables, and explain two models in cell biology that use this method. The first application deals with wound healing, more specifically the collagen alignment in scar tissue formation and the second models early aggregation in the cellular slime mold Dictyostelium discoideum. We solve these models using numerical techniques similar to the particle-in-cell method which requires that the discrete and continuum variables are interpolated one to the other. The implementational and numerical details are discussed in an informal and practical manner with particular attention given to the …

Cap-Independent Translational Enhancement Of Turnip Crinkle Virus Genomic And Subgenomic Rnas, Feng Qu, Thomas Jack Morris Feb 2000

Cap-Independent Translational Enhancement Of Turnip Crinkle Virus Genomic And Subgenomic Rnas, Feng Qu, Thomas Jack Morris

Nebraska Center for Virology: Faculty Publications

The presence of translational control elements and cap structures has not been carefully investigated for members of the Carmovirus genus, a group of small icosahedral plant viruses with positive-sense RNA genomes. In this study, we examined both the 5’ and 3’ untranslated regions (UTRs) of the turnip crinkle carmovirus (TCV) genomic RNA (4 kb) as well as the 5’ UTR of the coat protein subgenomic RNA (1.45 kb) for their roles in translational regulation. All three UTRs enhanced translation of the firefly luciferase reporter gene to different extents. Optimal translational efficiency was achieved when mRNAs contained both 5’ and 3’ …

Childhood Enuresis. Epidemiology, Pathophysiology And Management., Yaser S. Al-Ghamdy, Naseem A. Qureshi, Muzamil H. Abdelgadir

Saudi Medical Journal

The goal of this article is to review childhood enuresis, which is a common behavioral condition reported in millions of children worldwide. An online computer search was made, and the literature up to 1997 was screened in order to include relevant data for this review. The prevalence of childhood enuresis varies across reviewed studies. This was attributed to a variety of sociodemographic and cultural dynamics of societies. Similarly, the pathophysiology of this ubiquitous symptom is determined by multiple risk factors including biological, psychological, social, and cultural, but the developmental/maturational delay influenced by genetics remains the most plausible explanation. Although a …

Lipid Peroxidative Damage In The Erythrocytes And Elevation Of Serum Ldl-Cholesterol, Apolipoprotein-B, Ferritin And Uric Acid With Age And In Coronary Heart Disease Patients, Hameeda H. El-Gebali, Salahaldin A. Tahir, Syed S. Haider, Mustafa M. El-Fakhri

Saudi Medical Journal

OBJECTIVE: To determine the normal serum levels of LDL-cholesterol, apolipoprotein-B, ferritin, uric acid, and the extent of erythrocytes lipid peroxidation in healthy control group subjects and to compare them with coronary heart disease patients. Secondly, to study the effects of age and sex on these parameters. METHODS: The blood samples from 150 healthy Libyan control group subjects (110 men and 40 women) were classified into 3 groups according to their age. Group I consisted of 76 subjects with an age range from 20 to 35 years. Group II consisted of 45 subjects with an age range from 36 to 50 …

Arthropod And Helminth Parasites From The Plains Pocket Gopher, Geomys Bursarius Bursarius From The Hosts' Northern Boundary Range In Minnesota, Monroe H. Bartel, Scott Lyell Gardner

Harold W. Manter Laboratory of Parasitology: Faculty Publications

As part of a continuing and more general study of the diversity of parasites from subterranean mammals in central North America, individuals of the Plains pocket gopher, Geomys bursarius bursarius, were collected from 7 localities in northwestern Minnesota from September 1991 through October 1996. Arthropods collected included the fleas, Opisocrostis bruneri (4 of 124, 3.20/0), Foxella ignota ignota (85 of 124, 68.50/0); the chewing louse, Geomydoecus geomydis geomydis from 98 of 124 (790/0), and larvae of the tick, Dermacentor variabilis (1 of 124, 0.8%). Nematodes found included Physaloptera limbata (2 of 118 gophers, 1.7%), Capillaria americana (4 of 118, …
