World Birding Center-Edinburg: An Application To The Meadows Foundation, Wendy Smith Sturgis
World Birding Center-Edinburg: An Application To The Meadows Foundation, Wendy Smith Sturgis
Theses and Dissertations - UTB/UTPA
The World Birding Center is a unique and innovative partnership among Texas Parks & Wildlife Department and the cities of Brownsville, Mission, Weslaco, Harlingen, Edinburg, McAllen, Hidalgo, Roma, Rio Hondo and South Padre Island. The WBC is a first of its kind regional approach to nature conservation and birdwatching.
Edinburg's portion of the budget is 8.75%, and the City will fund salaries for a director and education coordinator and operations specific to the Edinburg center through the City's general fund.
Texas Parks & Wildlife Department estimates 175,000 visitors annually. Direct local expenditures (based on an average visit of 6.3 days, …

Vas (Visual Analysis System): An Information Visualization Engine To Interpret World Wide Web Structure, Tarkan Karadayi
Theses and Dissertations - UTB/UTPA
People increasingly encounter problems of interpreting and filtering mass quantities of information. The enormous growth of information systems on the World Wide Web has demonstrated that we need systems to filter, interpret, organize and present information in ways that allow users to use these large quantities of information. People need to be able to extract knowledge from this sometimes meaningful but sometimes useless mass of data in order to make informed decisions. Web users need to have some kind of information about the sort of page they might visit, such as, is it a rarely referenced or often-referenced page? This …

Factors Affecting Reproductive Success In Hosts Of The Bronzed Cowbird (Molothrus Aeneus) In The Lower Rio Grande Valley, Texas, Christopher R. Hathcock
Theses and Dissertations - UTB/UTPA
During 1997–99, brood parasitism by the Bronzed Cowbird ( Molothrus aeneus), nest predation, and nest sites were examined in selected songbird species in southern Texas. I found a significantly lower parasitism rate in the Long-billed Thrasher (Toxostoma longirostre ) and Olive Sparrow (Arremonops rufivirgatus) than did Carter (1984) at the same site in the early 1980's. High rates of cowbird visitation to Altamira Oriole (Icterus gularis) nests suggest that cowbirds frequently attempt to parasitize this species. However, orioles probably puncture-eject cowbird eggs from their nests most of the time. Orioles experienced a significantly lower …

Carpenter Ants And Control In Homes, Jay B. Karren, Alan H. Roe

Carpenter ants are members of the insect order Hymenoptera, which includes bees, wasps, sawflies, and other ants. Carpenter ants can be occasional pests in the home and are noted particularly for the damage they can cause when nesting in wood. In Utah they are more of a nuisance rather than a major structural pest.

Critical Examinations Of The Known And The Unknown In Social Science: Where Do We Go From Here?, Cynthia Wallat, Carolyn L. Piazza
The Qualitative Report
If the use of social science assumptions and beliefs is what helped set fields of professional practice on the quest for recognition in the academy, what does the recent outpouring of publications on the limits of science reveal about sociocultural research prospects at the dawn of the 21st century? The last few years alone have witnessed the publication of special journal issues on the "scientific wars" of the nineties, year long professional association debates on "the known and unknown," and new books and online data sources proclaiming "the end of social science." Cumulatively, research and commentary on the limits of …

Constructivist Instructional Design: Creating A Multimedia Package For Teaching Critical Qualitative Research, Brandie Colón, Kay Ann Taylor, Jerry Willis
The Qualitative Report
Instructors for quantitative research courses often find that there are many different types of support material for those courses. That is not the case with qualitative courses. Very little support material is available for qualitative research courses. In this paper we describe the creation of one multimedia package that focuses on one type of qualitative research - critical ethnographic techniques. The package was created to help graduate students learn to use five critical ethnographic techniques: meaning fields, validity reconstruction, role analysis, power analysis, and horizon analysis. We used a constructivist instructional design model, R2D2, to guide our development work. It …

A Graphic Design Primer Resources For Educators, Sarah Beth Tregay
Theses
This thesis examines current methods and trends in graphic design education. It focuses on the improvement of graphic design education by helping educators better understand the graphic design discipline, describing important factors in a design education, and the needs of the graphic design student. The focus is on the first year of graphic design study, and includes a sample textbook designed by the thesis author for first-year graphic arts students.

The Design Process, Thomas Pasquini
Theses
This thesis investigates similar problem-solving processes used in the fields of graphic design and engineering, revealing an underlying relationship between the two disciplines. It shows the principles these two disciplines share and how they employ a common creative process. By comparing these two vastly different disciplines, an understanding of the methodology of thought is constructed.
The Influence Of Shamanism On Korean Churches And How To Overcome It, Jin Woo Lee
The Influence Of Shamanism On Korean Churches And How To Overcome It, Jin Woo Lee
Doctoral Dissertations and Projects
What problem do Korean churches have now? Korean churches have had serious growth problems since the 1990s'. Although Korean churches have grown rapidly with the economic growth of Korea, there have been many contributions and evil influences of shamanism, which lies deep in the minds of Korean people. Obviously, shamanism has made a contribution to growth of the Korean church since Christianity was introduced. Many churches and pastors have consented to or utilized such a tendency. However, this created serious problems. Shamanism is anti-Biblical. Shamanism brought about a theoretical combination, transmutation of religion and many mistakes in church life. A …

Integrated Temporal Regulation Of The Photorespiratory Pathway. Circadian Regulation Of Two Arabidopsis Genes Encoding Serine Hydroxymethyltransferase, C Robertson Mcclung, Meier Hsu, Janet E. Painter, Jennifer M. Gagne, Sharon D. Karlsberg, Patrice A. Salome
Dartmouth Scholarship
The photorespiratory pathway is comprised of enzymes localized within three distinct cellular compartments: chloroplasts, peroxisomes, and mitochondria. Photorespiratory enzymes are encoded by nuclear genes, translated in the cytosol, and targeted into these distinct subcellular compartments. One likely means by which to regulate the expression of the genes encoding photorespiratory enzymes is coordinated temporal control. We have previously shown in Arabidopsis that a circadian clock regulates the expression of the nuclear genes encoding both chloroplastic (Rubisco small subunit and Rubisco activase) and peroxisomal (catalase) components of the photorespiratory pathway. To determine whether a circadian clock also regulates the expression of genes …

Changes In Coyote Activity Patterns Due To Reduced Exposure To Human Persecution, Ann M. Kitchen, Eric M. Gese, Edward R. Schauster
United States Department of Agriculture Wildlife Services: Staff Publications
Activity patterns in animals are influenced by a number of factors, including the animal's physiological adaptations, prey availability and distribution, and disturbances caused by predators and humans. We compared coyote (Canis latrans) activity patterns estimated using radio-tracking locations between 1983 and 1988 with those documented between 1996 and 1997 on the Pinon Canyon Maneuver Site, in southeastern Colorado. We tested the hypothesis that changes in the type of disturbance experienced by coyotes would result in changes in their activity patterns. Disturbance experienced by the coyote population studied during 1983-1988, included >50 years of intense exploitation (shooting and trapping by ranchers) …
