Do Timing And Pattern Of Myogenesis Correlate With Life History Mode In Anurans?, Matthew T. Smetanick, Rafael O. De Sá, Gary P. Radice

Biology Faculty Publications

The timing and pattern of myogensis varies among anurans that have been studied and the different patterns may provide useful phylogenetic information. Specific myogenic markers have been described (Muntz, 1975; Kielbowna, 1981; Boudjelida & Muntz, 1987; Radice et al., l989) and they can provide information on evolutionary changes for closely related lineages within a clade. For example, we previously compared first appearance of a muscle-specific protein, first twitch of axial muscle, onset of multinucleation within axial myotome, and first heartbeat in two pipid genera (Smetanick, et al., 1999). We found that although the timing of myogensis differed, the sequence of …

Attachment Of Toxoplasma Gondii To A Specific Membrane Fraction Of Cho Cells, Chaitali Dutta, Jane Grimwood, Lloyd H. Kasper Dec 2000

Attachment Of Toxoplasma Gondii To A Specific Membrane Fraction Of Cho Cells, Chaitali Dutta, Jane Grimwood, Lloyd H. Kasper

Dartmouth Scholarship

We have observed previously that attachment of Toxoplasma gondii to synchronized host cells is considerably increased at the mid-S phase (4 h postrelease). Synchronized CHO host cells at the mid-S phase were fractionated by molecular weight, and the antigens were used to produce a panel of polyclonal mouse antisera. The polyclonal antisera raised against fraction 4 with molecular mass ranging approximately from 18 to 40 kDa significantly reduced attachment to mid-S-phase host cells. Immunofluorescence assays demonstrated strong reactivity to mid-S-phase host cells and identified a number of potential receptors on Western blots. These data indicate that there is a specific …

Cardiogram Pattern After Sedative Dose Of Diazepam In Rabbits, Mohamed Saad, Nabil Mageed Dec 2000

Cardiogram Pattern After Sedative Dose Of Diazepam In Rabbits, Mohamed Saad, Nabil Mageed

Mansoura Medical Journal

In so-called anesthetic doses, all benzodiazepines decrease blood pressure and increase heart rate secondary to a decrease in peripheral resistance. But exceptionally, with dia-zepam they are reported to be secondary to a decrease in left ventricular work and cardiac output. This study was conducted to determine the effect of diazepam in subanesthetic dose on the different phases of cardiac work; the rapid, reduced ejection phases of ventricular systole and on the arterial pressure decay after aortic vaive closure. These phases of cardiogram were recognized and analyzed using a computer system connected to two biopreamplifiers for arterial pressure and ECG monitoring …

Personality Is The Main Issue: Presidential Election-Outcome Forecasting, Aubrey Immelman Dec 2000

Personality Is The Main Issue: Presidential Election-Outcome Forecasting, Aubrey Immelman

Psychology Faculty Publications

This article argues that conventional presidential election-outcome forecasting models based on situational and structural economic and political variables can be refined by acknowledging the pivotal role of personality in contemporary presidential campaigns and incorporating candidate personality variables as publicly perceived into predictive models.

Using the 2000 U.S. presidential election as a case study, it is contended that George W. Bush’s “dispositional advantage” effectively neutralized Al Gore’s “situational advantage” with respect to electability.

The Impact Of Economic Structural Adjustment Programs [Esaps] On Women And Children: Implications For Social Welfare In Zimbabwe, Saliwe M. Kawewe, Robert Dibie Dec 2000

The Impact Of Economic Structural Adjustment Programs [Esaps] On Women And Children: Implications For Social Welfare In Zimbabwe, Saliwe M. Kawewe, Robert Dibie

The Journal of Sociology & Social Welfare

This study examines the impact of structural adjustment policy (SAP) on the welfare of Zimbabweans, particularly women and children and draws some parallels with economic policy in the US and its effect on social welfare programs and the poor. The paper argues that economic structural adjustment programs (ESAPs), introduced by the World Bank and the International Monetary Fund as major international financial institutions in economic globalization, have been an inappropriate public policy for Zimbabwe. These economic reforms inflate poverty, decrease the country's capability to develop a strong diversified domestic economy, increase the exploitation of workers through deregulation accompanied by environmental …

Endangered Species Protection: A Proposal To Modify The Legislation In Colombia, Adriana Campuzano Dec 2000

Endangered Species Protection: A Proposal To Modify The Legislation In Colombia, Adriana Campuzano

LLM Theses and Essays

The Convention of International Trade of Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (“CITES”) is praised as a successful international treaty in protecting and preserving endangered species. However, the effectiveness of CITES is reliant upon member States enforcing and implementing CITES provisions. Colombia has enacted laws implementing CITES but has experienced an increase in the number of endangered species despite these laws. On the other hand, the United States’ implementation of CITES through the Endangered Species Act (“ESA”) is viewed as a sophisticated and successful CITES implementation programs. This thesis makes an attempt to offer viable proposals to help improve …

Male Coercive Sexual Behavior As A Function Of Male Resource-Potential And Respondent Gender., Christy D. Wolfe Dec 2000

Male Coercive Sexual Behavior As A Function Of Male Resource-Potential And Respondent Gender., Christy D. Wolfe

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The present study examined whether the resource-potential (RP) of a male dater (i.e., potential financial success and status) and/or respondent gender related to attitudes toward coercive sexual behavior by the male. Participants (59 males and 82 females) read a hypothetical dating scenario in which a heterosexual couple went out for dinner and then returned to the female’s apartment to watch a movie. The RP of the male dater was set at high and low. Following the scenario, rating scales posing increasing levels of coercive sexual behavior (a sexual advance, verbal persuasion, and physical coercion) were presented. The participants rated the …

Comparative Literature As Textual Anthropology, Antony Tatlow Dec 2000

Comparative Literature As Textual Anthropology, Antony Tatlow

CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture

In his article, "Comparative Literature as Textual Anthropology," Antony Tatlow proposes textual anthropology as a critic's approach in the comparative study of literature. If anthropology is "behavioural hermeneutics" (Clifford Geertz) with the implication of self-reflexivity, the anthropologist will be disposed to fashion in the object of attention what is neglected and that can therefore be described as the unconscious of his/her own culture. In an application of his framework, Tatlow relates totemic and utopian thought through the use of animal signs. In his article, Tatlow shows how cultural demands both fashion the ethnographer-critic and select the perspectives he/she must transcend. …

Design, Construction, And Evaluation Of Coal Extraction Pilot Plant To Manufacture Coal-Based Carbon Pitch, Brian Wayne Bland Dec 2000

Design, Construction, And Evaluation Of Coal Extraction Pilot Plant To Manufacture Coal-Based Carbon Pitch, Brian Wayne Bland

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

A solvent extraction technique for removing mineral matter, including the inorganic sulfur, from coal has been developed by the Department of Chemical Engineering at WVU. The extraction is preformed at mild conditions (202°C and atmospheric pressure) using the solvent N-Methyl-2-Pyrrolidone (NMP). Laboratory results have shown that this technique yields a clean coal product containing less than 1 percent ash and virtually no inorganic sulfur.;This research was conducted for further process design and economic development of an industrial-scale extraction process.;This research reported the possibility of production scale processing by constructing a pilot plant. The pilot plant was used to explore the …

Representative Ways To Analyze And Survey Changes In Long-Term Electrocardiographic Recordings, Simona Gabriela Crihalmeanu Dec 2000

Representative Ways To Analyze And Survey Changes In Long-Term Electrocardiographic Recordings, Simona Gabriela Crihalmeanu

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

The goal of this research is to explore techniques with which long-term physiologic time-series data can be analyzed, so that relevant changes in physiological signals, particularly the electrocardiogram signal, can be captured, processed, quantified and stored. A new experimental model was developed such that the electrocardiogram can be monitored continuously over thirteen weeks. Cardiotoxicity was progressively induced with doxorubicin in a rabbit model, and electrocardiographic progressions from normal state to diseased state were continuously tracked. Automated methods for analyzing the data were developed to manage and control the extensive electrocardiogram dataset. A significant challenge to this work is the sheer …

Effects Of Ownership And Circulation On Editorial Presentation In West Virginia Newspapers, Matthew E. Umstead Dec 2000

Effects Of Ownership And Circulation On Editorial Presentation In West Virginia Newspapers, Matthew E. Umstead

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

This thesis, which focuses on the post-yellow journalism era in West Virginia, further develops the body of research done on the influence of chain ownership in newspapers.;Historically, strong political biases in news coverage were found in the yellow journalism, early 20th century period. And this study finds a conservative bias on the opinion-editorial pages in a traditionally Democratic state with few competing media markets and reliance upon newspapers for local news. This thesis finds ownership status and circulation size affects the balance and variety of feature items presented within the opinion editorial content. Thus, previous research suggesting chain ownership influence …

Limits Of Sensitivity To Delayed Timeout From Avoidance, Chad Michael Galuska Dec 2000

Limits Of Sensitivity To Delayed Timeout From Avoidance, Chad Michael Galuska

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Session-reduction procedures have been employed to assess molar control of avoidance responding. By conceptualizing session reduction as a delayed timeout from avoidance, the present study investigated the limits of molar control while minimizing several methodological limitations inherent in such procedures. Six times during each session, a two-link chain schedule was superimposed on a baseline schedule of variable-cycle shock avoidance. Completion of the initial link (fixed-ratio 10 schedule) produced a timeout following a signaled delay during which the avoidance schedule remained operative. For most rats, the delay was manipulated across conditions from 0 s to 60 s. Control by the delayed …

Persistence Of Response Variation And Repetition, Adam Howard Doughty Dec 2000

Persistence Of Response Variation And Repetition, Adam Howard Doughty

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

A multiple chained schedule was used to assess the persistence of fixed and variable response sequences. In one terminal link, a single 4-peck response sequence produced food (Repeat) and in the other terminal link a 4-peck response sequence produced food only if it had been occurring infrequently relative to the other 15 possible responses (Vary). Similar response and reinforcement rates occurred in each terminal link. Identical variable-interval 20-s schedules operated in the initial links preceding each terminal link and lower response rates reliably occurred in the initial link preceding the Vary terminal link. After responding stabilized under the multiple chained …

Commercialism, Subsistence, And Competency On The Western Virginia Frontier, 1765--1800, John M. Boback Dec 2000

Commercialism, Subsistence, And Competency On The Western Virginia Frontier, 1765--1800, John M. Boback

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Since the early nineteenth century, Americans have frequently associated the pioneers of the Appalachian Mountains with subsistence farming, economic independence, and a certain degree of hostility toward capitalism. This thesis disproves the myth of pioneer self-sufficiency by demonstrating how the men and women who settled in western Virginia during the final third of the eighteenth century used a variety of tactics in their struggle to achieve a competency. Although subsistence activities, such as hunting and farming, undoubtedly held an important place in the backcountry domestic economy, the settlers also interacted with the commercial market as both producers and consumers of …

Effects Of Gender And Gender Role On Cardiovascular Reactivity And Anger Experience During An Interpersonal Interaction, Andria Leigh Black Dec 2000

Effects Of Gender And Gender Role On Cardiovascular Reactivity And Anger Experience During An Interpersonal Interaction, Andria Leigh Black

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

This study examined gender and gender role differences in cardiovascular reactivity and anger experience during an interpersonal interaction. Ninety-six participants interacted in dyads (traditional masculine men with traditional feminine women, and androgynous men with androgynous women). Agency (degree of challenge; High versus Low) and Communion (degree of agreement; Agree versus Disagree) were manipulated. Heart rate (HR) and systolic and diastolic blood pressure (SBP and DBP) were assessed. Participants completed questionnaires assessing state and trait anger, and angry thoughts. Traditional women exhibited higher HR during speaking and listening intervals than other groups. Higher levels of state anger were reported for individuals …

Evaluation Of Survival And Recovery Characteristics Of Bifidobacteria As Indicators Of Fecal Pollution Of Water, John Elmer Ravenscroft Jr. Dec 2000

Evaluation Of Survival And Recovery Characteristics Of Bifidobacteria As Indicators Of Fecal Pollution Of Water, John Elmer Ravenscroft Jr.

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

The examination of aquatic environments for bacterial indicator organisms has proven to be a useful and well-established practice for the purpose of monitoring microbiological water quality. An ideal indicator of fecal pollution should be present in sufficient density to allow detection, present simultaneous with pathogen(s), incapable of aftergrowth in external aquatic environments, easy to enumerate, and exclusively of fecal origin. Unfortunately, none of the indicator organisms presently in use today meet all of these requirements. Bifidobacteria show promise as indicators of fecal pollution in water with the additional ability of potentially distinguishing between fecal pollution of human and animal origin. …

Encoding Of Periodic Skin Stimuli By Spinal Dorsal Horn Neurons, Jeffrey J. Lawson Dec 2000

Encoding Of Periodic Skin Stimuli By Spinal Dorsal Horn Neurons, Jeffrey J. Lawson

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

The encoding of vibrotactile pitch by neurons of the somatosensory system has been investigated at many levels of the neuraxis. These studies, however, have not extended to the spinal dorsal horn, which is known to process low threshold mechanoreceptive input. The studies presented here were designed to assess the possible role of the dorsal horn in the encoding of vibrotactile pitch. To accomplish this task, dorsal horn single unit extracellular recordings were obtained during periodic electrical and sinusoidal mechanical stimulation of their receptive fields. Techniques used in classifying vibrotactile pitch encoding were similar to those used in other somatosensory nuclei, …

Alexander Von Humboldt And Nineteenth-Century Ideas On The Origin Of American Indians, Michael Anthony Wadyko Dec 2000

Alexander Von Humboldt And Nineteenth-Century Ideas On The Origin Of American Indians, Michael Anthony Wadyko

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

This dissertation revolves around Alexander von Humboldt's research on Indian origins. Humboldt conducted investigations on Indians during his precedent-setting scientific expedition to Meso- and South America during the years 1799--1804. Officially sponsored by the Spanish crown, the main purposes for this expedition were twofold: to examine, evaluate, and discredit Buffon's "degeneracy" claims about America and its inhabitants, and to gather empirical evidence on geography, climate, flora, fauna, and the indigenous cultures. From these results Humboldt published three major works about the expedition, particularly a thirty-volume work condensed to two volumes, Vues de Cordilleres et monuments des peuples d' Amerique.;From this …
