Future Directions For Joint Agricultural-Environmental Policies: Implications Fo The United Kingdom Experience For Europe And The United States, Thomas Dobbs, Jules Pretty Aug 2000

Future Directions For Joint Agricultural-Environmental Policies: Implications Fo The United Kingdom Experience For Europe And The United States, Thomas Dobbs, Jules Pretty

Economics Research Reports (1969 - 2017)

Major agri-environmental programs tried in the United Kingdom (UK.) since the mid- 1980s are examined in this report. Special attention is given to the Environmental Sensitive Areas (ESA) scheme, the Countryside Stewardship Scheme (CSS), and schemes to promote organic agriculture-first the Organic Aid Scheme and, following that, the Organic Farming Scheme. Several major studies and reviews of these and other agri-environmental schemes in England, Scotland, and Wales have been conducted in recent years. These studies and reviews are drawn upon to examine both the successes and shortcomings of various schemes in drawing farmers into more environmentally sound farming practices and …

Effects Of Genetic Type And Protein Levels On Growth Of Swine, O.W. Robison, L. L. Christian, R. Goodwin, R. K. Johnson, J. W. Mabry, R. K. Miller, M. D. Tokach Aug 2000

Effects Of Genetic Type And Protein Levels On Growth Of Swine, O.W. Robison, L. L. Christian, R. Goodwin, R. K. Johnson, J. W. Mabry, R. K. Miller, M. D. Tokach

Department of Animal Science: Faculty Publications

A total of 1,588 pigs representing six genetic lines were included in this study. These lines were selected to represent a wide range of biological types for appetite, rate and composition of gain, and meat quality traits. Each line was fed four different diets differing in lysine content. Barrows and gilts were used in the experiment, and pigs were randomly assigned to come off test at one of three weights (113.6, 131.8, or 150 kg). Rates of increase in weight, backfat thickness, and longissimus muscle area were essentially linear. Genetic type and diet influenced (P < .05) rates of change in weight, backfat thickness, and longissimus muscle area and 10th rib fat depth, carcass longissimus muscle area, and dressing percentage. Genetic type × diet interactions were significant for weight change and 10th rib fat. As off-test-weight class increased fat and longissimus muscle area increased in linear fashion. In general, interactions associated with diet resulted from feeding the diet lowest in lysine. There was little evidence of genetic type × diet interactions. If those interactions that tested significant are real, they are a result of extremes in both genetic type (high fatness) and lysine level (low). Slaughtering pigs at heavier weights results in no change in rate of gain over the feeding period and linear increases in longissimus muscle area and backfat thickness.

Biological Implications Of A Discrete Mathematical Model For Collagen Deposition And Alignment In Dermal Wound Repair, J. C. Dallon, J. A. Sherratt, P. K. Maini, M. W. Ferguson Aug 2000

Biological Implications Of A Discrete Mathematical Model For Collagen Deposition And Alignment In Dermal Wound Repair, J. C. Dallon, J. A. Sherratt, P. K. Maini, M. W. Ferguson

Faculty Publications

We develop a novel mathematical model for collagen deposition and alignment during dermal wound healing. We focus on the interactions between fibroblasts, modelled as discrete entities, and a continuous extracellular matrix composed of collagen and a fibrin based blood clot. There are four basic interactions assumed in the model: fibroblasts orient the collagen matrix, fibroblasts produce and degrade collagen and fibrin and the matrix directs the fibroblasts and determines the speed of the cells. Several factors which influence the alignment of collagen are examined and related to current anti-scarring therapies using transforming growth factor " The most influential of these …

Univercity News (2000-08-14)

UniverCity News, 1998-2001

VCU Today, the University’s first official administrative organ, began as a somewhat irregular monthly publication but moved to a bi-weekly newspaper format in the 1980s. The newspaper changed its name to VCU Voice in 1988 and ten years later it appeared under the title UniverCity News. As it neared the end of its run as a physical newspaper, the publication became simply VCU News. These four publications were essentially the same periodical published under different titles by the Office of University Relations. VCU News appeared online for the first time in 2002.

Life History Variation In Recently Established Populations Of Western Mosquitofish (Gambusia Affinis), Craig A. Stockwell, Gary L. Vinyard Aug 2000

Life History Variation In Recently Established Populations Of Western Mosquitofish (Gambusia Affinis), Craig A. Stockwell, Gary L. Vinyard

Western North American Naturalist

We report life history characteristics for 4 recently established populations of western mosquitofish (Gambusia affinis). Mosquitofish from thermally stable habitats, Bonham and Garrett, were characterized by maturity at large sizes, high fat reserves, and large embryos. In contrast, females from a thermally unstable habitat, Wabuska, matured at small sizes and had low fat reserves and small embryos. Females from Parker, a site with no appreciable thermal input, matured at intermediate sizes and had low fat reserves as well as large embryos. These populations shared a common ancestor in 1937; therefore, these results suggest either phenotypic plasticity or rapid …

Examining Ecological Consequences Of Feral Horse Grazing Using Exclosures, Erik A. Beever, Peter F. Brussard Aug 2000

Examining Ecological Consequences Of Feral Horse Grazing Using Exclosures, Erik A. Beever, Peter F. Brussard

Western North American Naturalist

Although feral horses have inhabited western North America since the end of the 16th century, relatively little synecological research has been conducted to quantitatively characterize how they interact with ecosystem components. Because feral horses exhibit watering behavior markedly different from that of domestic cattle, it is particularly important to evaluate response of ecosystem elements near water sources to horse use. To assess this response, we performed live-trapping of small mammals and 2-tiered vegetative sampling in 2 mountain ranges in central Nevada in the interior Great Basin, USA. At low elevations, plots around horse-excluded springs exhibited notably greater plant species richness, …

A Comparison Of Riparian Condition And Aquatic Invertebrate Community Indices In Central Nevada, Tom B. Kennedy, Adina M. Merenlender, Gary L. Vinyard Aug 2000

A Comparison Of Riparian Condition And Aquatic Invertebrate Community Indices In Central Nevada, Tom B. Kennedy, Adina M. Merenlender, Gary L. Vinyard

Western North American Naturalist

The importance of maintaining healthy riparian communities to sustain natural stream processes and function is well documented. Land management agencies in the West are currently developing methods to assess and monitor riparian community condition to adapt land use practices that would better protect rangeland ecosystems. To determine whether these methods also provide an indication of abiotic and biotic stream condition, we compared the classification system of riparian communities developed by the U.S. Forest Service (USFS) to physical parameters of stream condition and to aquatic invertebrate community assemblages. Thirty-three sites in 19 different streams of the Toiyabe Range in central Nevada …

Distribution And Ecology Of Freshwater Ostracoda (Crustacea) Collected From Springs Of Nevada, Idaho, And Oregon: A Preliminary Study, Okan Külköylüoğlu, Gary L. Vinyard

Western North American Naturalist

Fourteen freshwater ostracod species collected from 24 springs in Nevada, Idaho, and Oregon between 1991 and 1994 were classified. Their ecology, based on major water parameters (i.e., temperature, dissolved oxygen, pH, conductivity), and biogeographical distribution in North America were studied. Among these 14 species, 9 (Ilyocypris bradyi, I. gibba, Darwinula stevensoni, Candona candida, Heterocypris incongruens, Herpetocypris reptans, H. chevreuxi, Prionocypris canadensis, P. longiforma) are new records for Nevadas ostracod fauna, while 3 (H. reptans, P. canadensis, and Cypria turneri) are new species for Oregon. H. reptans …

Wildlife Control At Vancouver International Airport: Introducing Border Collies, Dave Ball Aug 2000

Wildlife Control At Vancouver International Airport: Introducing Border Collies, Dave Ball

Bird Strike Committee-USA/Canada Joint Annual Meeting: 2nd (2000)

Situated on an island located along a major Pacific Flyway, Vancouver International Airport (YVR) has developed a comprehensive wildlife management program in order to maintain a safe aircraft operating environment. YVR attracts a diverse range of bird species, including: ducks; gulls; herons; geese (Canada and Snow); sparrows; swallows; crows; starlings; owls; hawks; and eagles. The airport’s Wildlife Management Program consists of a Habitat Management Program and a Wildlife Control Program which are both based on a database of knowledge the airport continues to build regarding the behaviour patterns of wildlife common to the airport. Operating 24-hours-per-day 365 days of the …

A Better Way To Record And Report On Wildlife Movements, Greg Winfield

Bird Strike Committee-USA/Canada Joint Annual Meeting: 2nd (2000)

As a former Controller, I’ve recognized that Wildlife Officers usually end up producing hand-counted reports that often fail to highlight critical data such as species trends, primary attractants, dispersant ratios, migration timings, etc. I have written a software program that specifically addresses this problem. AIRMAN (Animal Interdiction Report Manager) is a complete stand-alone program that reports on all aspects of wildlife intervention. There are no calculations to be made, nor any wading through a myriad of daily logs for answers. CYYZ have seen the advantage and have implemented this software already. It produces Line Graphics to display trends based on …

Usda-Aphis-Wildlife Services’ Involvement At Airports During Fy 1999 (Poster), Jessica Dewey

Bird Strike Committee-USA/Canada Joint Annual Meeting: 2nd (2000)

Birds and other wildlife are a serious problem at U.S. airports. Wildlife strikes cost U.S. civil aviation over $300 million per year, based on data from 1990-1998, and the number of reported bird strikes to civil aircraft has increased over 104% during that same time period. The increase in aircraft striking wildlife is due in part to the significant increase of various wildlife populations during the past 30 years. The United States Department of Agriculture, Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service, Wildlife Services (WS) program provides Federal assistance to airports in addressing wildlife hazards to aircraft. To comply with the …
