An Outbreak Of Leptospirosis In A Swine Breeding Herd : It's Diagnosis, Treatment And Economic Effect, Duangjai Suwanchareon, Annop Kunavongkrit

The Thai Journal of Veterinary Medicine

An outbreak of leptospirosis in a 2600 sow breeding herd, in which 5% of the sows aborted, was investigated. Serum samples from 11 aborted sows were examined for leptospira antibodies. Using a Microscopic Agglutination Test (MAT), containing only 12 serovars, no leptospira serovars were detected. However, after using a Microcapsule Agglutination Test (MCAT) kit, a further MAT using the additional three serovars (sejroe, hardjo and bratislava) revealed that the cause of abortion was Leptospira interrogan serovars bratislava and sejroe. After the final diagnosis, the animals were treated by using 800 ppm chlortetracycline in the feed for two weeks, followed by …

Intestinal Lesions Caused By A Strain Of Chlamydia Suis In Weanling Pigs Infected At 21 Days Of Age, Douglas G. Rogers, Arthur A. Andersen Sep 2000

Intestinal Lesions Caused By A Strain Of Chlamydia Suis In Weanling Pigs Infected At 21 Days Of Age, Douglas G. Rogers, Arthur A. Andersen

School of Veterinary and Biomedical Sciences: Faculty Publications

The objective of this study was to determine whether a strain of Chlamydia suis shown previously to be an intestinal pathogen in gnotobiotic piglets could cause diarrhea and intestinal lesions in young weanling pigs. Pigs from 2 sows were randomly assigned to 2 groups. Group 1 included 13 pigs that were weaned at 24 hours of age and then housed in isolator units and fed milk replacer and unmedicated starter ration. Group 2 included 8 pigs that nursed their respective sows, consumed unmedicated starter ration, and were weaned at 21 days of age. Ten pigs in group 1 and 6 …

Using Expert Systems For Simulation Modeling Of Patient Scheduling, Charles R. Standridge, Duane Steward Sep 2000

Using Expert Systems For Simulation Modeling Of Patient Scheduling, Charles R. Standridge, Duane Steward

Peer Reviewed Articles

Modeling the scheduling of patient appointments is an important issue in simulating a health care delivery facility. A simulation model must include the control logic of appointment scheduling software and the explicit and implicit decision rules used by the human scheduler in selecting an appointment time. Expert systems provide one way of modeling such control logic and decision rules. We describe a structure for an expert system that models patient appointment scheduling and the integration of such an expert system within a simulation model. An example expert system for a small animal veterinary clinic is presented.

Population-Specific Vital Rate Contributions Influence Management Of An Endangered Ungulate, Heather E. Johnson, L. Scott Mills, Thomas R. Stephenson, John D. Wehausen Sep 2000

Population-Specific Vital Rate Contributions Influence Management Of An Endangered Ungulate, Heather E. Johnson, L. Scott Mills, Thomas R. Stephenson, John D. Wehausen

Wildlife Biology Faculty Publications

To develop effective management strategies for the recovery of threatened and endangered species, it is critical to identify those vital rates (survival and reproductive parameters) responsible for poor population performance and those whose increase will most efficiently change a population's trajectory. In actual application, however, approaches identifying key vital rates are often limited by inadequate demographic data, by unrealistic assumptions of asymptotic population dynamics, and of equal, infinitesimal changes in mean vital rates. We evaluated the consequences of these limitations in an analysis of vital rates most important in the dynamics of federally endangered Sierra Nevada bighorn sheep (Ovis canadensis …
