Spatial And Temporal Changes In Land Use And Land Cover From 1988 To 1992 In The Upper White River Watershed, H. D. Scott, J. M. Mckimmey
Spatial And Temporal Changes In Land Use And Land Cover From 1988 To 1992 In The Upper White River Watershed, H. D. Scott, J. M. Mckimmey
Arkansas Water Resources Center Technical Reports
Changes in Land Use and Land Cover (LULC) in the upper White River Watershed from 1988 to 1992 were analyzed and plotted using the geographic information system known as Geographic Resources Analyses Support System (GRASS). This portion of the White River Watershed includes two sub-basins the East Fork and the Middle Fork. In addition, LULC changes were determined for two smaller sub-basins, Shumate Creek and Cannon Creek, located in the East Fork of the White River. The sources and methods of interpretation of the 1988 and 1992 of data were different. Thus, there were variations in how certain portions of …

A Study Guide To St. Paul's Letter To The Romans : A Section-By-Section Commentary On Romans With Questions For Reflection, Scott Gambrill Sinclair
Faculty Authored Books and Book Contributions
I have been dismayed for some time that there is a shortage of good biblical study guides. Most genuinely informed and creative books on the Bible are written primarily for scholars and are too technical (and often too long) to be accessible to general readers. This book is the result. Here I present my own under-standing of the structure and purpose of Romans and, at the same time, provide a survey of this epistle that any educated reader can follow and that will be useful for group Bible study as well. I hope that you find it helpful

Ouabain Interaction With Cardiac Na+/K+-Atpase Initiates Signal Cascades Independent Of Changes In Intracellular Na+ And Ca2+, Jiang Liu, Jiang Tian, Michael Haas, Joseph I. Shapiro, Amir Askari, Zijian Xie
Pharmaceutical Science and Research
We have shown previously that partial inhibition of the cardiac myocyte Na+/K+-ATPase activates signal pathways that regulate myocyte growth and growth-related genes and that increases in intracellular Ca2+ concentration ([Ca2+]i) and reactive oxygen species (ROS) are two essential second messengers within these pathways. The aim of this work was to explore the relation between [Ca2+]i and ROS. When myocytes were in a Ca2+-free medium, ouabain caused no change in [Ca2+]i, but it increased ROS as it did when the cells were in …

Diversity Of Behaviour During Novel Object Tests Is Reduced In Pigs Housed In Substrate-Impoverished Conditions, Françoise Wemelsfelder, Marie Haskell, Michael T. Mendl, Sheena Calvert, Alistair B. Lawrence
Diversity Of Behaviour During Novel Object Tests Is Reduced In Pigs Housed In Substrate-Impoverished Conditions, Françoise Wemelsfelder, Marie Haskell, Michael T. Mendl, Sheena Calvert, Alistair B. Lawrence
Sentience Collection
Modern intensive farming conditions lack the diversity of substrates present in more natural environments and offer young animals fewer opportunities for interaction. Evidence exists that this may affect the organization of interactive patterns of behaviour, but shifts in behavioural diversity have not been measured directly. We investigated the effect of the substrate in the home pen on the diversity of behaviour in young growing pigs, Sus scrofa. Over 5 months, 26 pigs were housed singly in either substrate-impoverished (SI) or substrate-enriched (SE) conditions. Once every month we recorded the behaviour of these pigs in detail both in the home pens …

Monitoring Cattle Behavior And Pasture Use With Gps And Gis, L. W. Turner, M. C. Udal, B. T. Larson, S. A. Shearer
Management and Monitoring of Farm Animals Collection
Precision agriculture is already being used commercially to improve variability management in row crop agriculture. In the same way, understanding how spatial and temporal variability of animal, forage, soil and landscape features affect grazing behavior and forage utilization provides potential to modify pasture management, improve efficiency of utilization, and maximize profits. Recent advances in global positioning system (GPS) technology have allowed the development of lightweight GPS collar receivers suitable for monitoring animal position at 5-min intervals. The GPS data can be imported into a geographic information system (GIS) to assess animal behavior characteristics and pasture utilization. This paper describes application …

Ground Water In Northwest Arkansas: Minimizing Nutrient Contamination From Non-Point Sources In Karst Terrane, R. K. Davis, J. V. Brahana, J. S. Johnston
Arkansas Water Resources Center Technical Reports
The purpose of the project is to evaluate the effectiveness of Best Management Practices (BPMs) in preventing non-point source contamination of the ground-water resources in the karst terrane of northwestern Arkansas. Limestone and dolomite aquifers in the region are highly vulnerable to contamination. Ground-water studies performed in the region during the last two decades indicate degradation of these carbonate aquifers by nutrients and bacteria. The expeditious growth of the poultry industry during this period, in combination with the inordinate population growth of the region constitute a threat to the ground-water resources from both point sources and non-point sources of contamination. …

Oasis Or Mirage: The Farming Of Black Pearl In The Northern Cook Islands, Cluny Macpherson
Oasis Or Mirage: The Farming Of Black Pearl In The Northern Cook Islands, Cluny Macpherson
Pacific Studies
By the late twentieth century, small island states in the Pacific faced severe problems resulting from the ways in which they had become integrated into the world capitalist economy since the early nineteenth century. Generic environmental, economic, and social problems follow from dependence on the production of a relatively small number of crops for sale in the world economy, out-migration and remittances, and foreign aid. Most states have sought to reduce their dependence and to move toward greater degrees of economic self-sufficiency. In the case of atolls, opportunities for development are typically regarded as minimal because of fragile ecosystems and …

Describes two research studies with high school teachers and students that examine various aspects of both students' and teachers' perspectives on teacher responses to student writing. Examines how well teachers put their own theory about writing instruction into practice with their response style; analyzes teacher comments and students' understanding of them; and offers the teachers' responses to the studies.
