Race Is Dead, Peter O'Brien

Political Science Faculty Research

Implied in the work of Marx, Nietzsche and Weber is the declining significance of race in modernity. The field of cultural studies, led by the likes of Edward Said, sees race as constitutive of modern (European) identity. Oddly, however, Said's work is inspired by both Nietzsche's and Marx's thought. I explain this curiosity by arguing that, ironically, scholarly study of racism is actually made possible by its waning significance. Moreover, due to this increasing insignificance, students of racism must exaggerate racism's importance in order to justify their research.

Environmental Imperatives Reconsidered, Terry L. Jones, Gary M. Brown, L. Mark Raab, Janet L. Mcvickar, W. Geoffrey Spaulding, Douglas J. Kennett, Andrew York, Phillip L. Walker

Social Sciences

Review of late Holocene paleoenvironmental and cultural sequences from four regions of western North America shows striking correlations between drought and changes in subsistence, population, exchange, health, and interpersonal violence during the Medieval Climatic Anomaly (a.d. 800–1350). While ultimate causality is difficult to identify in the archaeological record, synchrony of the environmental and cultural changes and the negative character of many human responses—increased interpersonal violence, deterioration of long-distance exchange relationships, and regional abandonments—suggest widespread demographic crises caused by decreased environmental productivity. Culture And The Management Of Advanced Automation: An Analysis Of Two Airlines, Surendra Cudah Ratwatte

The purpose of this study was to investigate the relationship between National, Organizational and Professional Cultures and the attitudes toward managing advanced automation among the flightcrew of two international airlines. The Flight Management Attitudes Questionnaire developed by the University of Texas was utilized to determine the attitudes and perceptions held by airline pilots of various nationalities who fly late model Airbus and Boeing airliners. A census survey was conducted at the crew bases of the two airlines, one in the Middle East and other in South Asia. A total of 230 completed surveys were received. Chi Square analysis was used …

Performance Of Sinusoidally Deformed Hydrophone Line Arrays, Deanna M. Caveny, Donald R. Del Balzo, James H. Leclere, George E. Ioup

It is well known that array deformations can distort beam patterns and introduce bearing errors if the beamformer assumes linearity. It is also known that deformed arrays can resolve left–right ambiguities, provided the shape is known. In this work, these two effects are studied for undamped and damped sinusoidally deformed arrays with small deformation amplitudes in the horizontal (x,y) plane only. By use of fixed arc-length separations along the array, the hydrophone (x,y) coordinates are determined numerically and the error in assuming equal x spacing is summarized for a sample array. Religion And Violence In Popular Film, Bryan Stone

Journal of Religion & Film

Contemporary viewers of popular film are likely to have their values, perceptions, and behavior with regard to violence shaped by the cumulative effect of film conventions and recurrent images. An analysis of the top grossing films during the 1990's reveals that when religion is portrayed in connection with violence, it is rarely taken seriously as a motivating force for rejecting violence. On the contrary, while religion can play a chaplaincy or sanctuary role on screen for victims of violence, it typically serves either as a force for justifying and legitimating violence or as a device for enhancing the entertainment value …

The purpose of this study is to investigate several types of American intelligence collectors. These collectors include human, airborne, shipborne, satellite, and signals. The time frame for this study will begin with the American involvement in the Second World War, commencing with Operation Torch in 1942, and end with the conclusion of the Cold War, marked by the fall of the Berlin Wall in 1989. The United States strategic framework in the Pacific has three parts: peacetime engagement, as described above, which includes a forward presence; crisis response, which builds on forward-stationed forces, the "boots-on-the ground" and, if necessary, fighting and winning any conflict that might develop. The mechanisms to carry out this strategic framework are embedded in the regular contacts and engagement activities that the United States carries out with friends and allies in the region. Because contemporary families represent an increasingly diverse and complicated range of relationships and values, individuals engaged in traditional gender roles may find it difficult to challenge gender biased institutions or abandon abusive relationships. While family violence continues to be linked with economic and social power, interpersonal relationships based on traditional gender roles, which require conformity to social expectations, can also be a contributing factor. Feminist theory, which links patriarchal ideology with family violence, is used to explore culturally defined gender roles and the influence of social forces or social institutions that produce conflict, strain or violent behaviors.
