Pondering The Word, Dennis Packard, Sandra Packard

Journal of Book of Mormon Studies

Despite the emphasis that the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints places on scriptures, particularly the Book of Mormon, some members find it difficult to truly love the scriptures. This article claims that by pondering the scriptures often, members can better understand and appreciate the prophetic words. In order to find a deeper love for the scriptures, readers should consider the following details while reading: the setting of a passage; the meaning of various words and phrases; the author’s attitude when he wrote the passage; the possible comparisons between passages; the possible implied messages of the authors; the possible …

The “Lost” U.S. Technical Reports: Obtaining Reports From The 1940s And ‘50s, Robert L. Bolin

Although centralized distribution of U.S. government technical reports began in 1946, the reports distributed by predecessors of the National Technical Information Service (NTIS) for the first 15 years are now effectively “lost.” They are not available from NTIS, and they are not listed in the NTIS bibliographic database. Those reports are available from the Photoduplication Service of the Library of Congress, and many are available from other sources as well. This article describes bibliographic tools and resources available to identify those reports and provides advice on how to obtain them at a reasonable price.

Manufactured Gas In California, 1852-1940: Basis For Remedial Action, Allen W. Hatheway

Geosciences and Geological and Petroleum Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

California was a relatively late entry (1852) in the manufactured gas industry. However, its gas entrepreneurs showed considerable invention and enterprise in establishing more than 250 separate gas plants, this in a total geographic environment approximating a whole nation of separate-operating and now environmentally endangering, conditions. Virtually all of the many gas generation processes and patent variations were employed in the state, and a wide variety of geologic conditions have created an even wider variety of fate and transport conditions related to their far and other residuals. In November 1998, the voters of Wisconsin established a constitutional right to keep and bear arms. The Wisconsin Legislature framed and sent to the voters a broadly worded constitutional amendment that created an individual right to keep and bear arms for defense, security, hunting, recreation, or any other lawful purpose. It was designed to repeal and prevent the subsequent re-enactment of unreasonable prohibitions of that right, including the state's current sweeping prohibition of the liberty to carry concealed weapons at any time or place or in any manner. Henri IV won the throne of France as a feat of arms in a time of great social, religious, economic and military transformation. Militarily, Henri has generally been regarded as a gallant, opportunistic and lucky cavalry commander whose remarkable sense of timing and flexible personal principles enabled him to play a major role in the ending of the Wars of Religion in France. Current debate over the "Military Revolution" of the sixteenth century and the "Revolution in Military Affairs" of the twentieth has renewed interest in both the characters and the techniques of warfare in transformation.
