A Structural Equation Model Of Environmental Attitude And Behaviour : The Hong Kong Experience, Oi Ling Siu, Kui Yin Cheung Jan 1999

A Structural Equation Model Of Environmental Attitude And Behaviour : The Hong Kong Experience, Oi Ling Siu, Kui Yin Cheung

Centre for Public Policy Studies : CPPS Working Paper Series

The present study aims at establishing a structural equation model relating affect, verbal commitment, and actual commitment using a sample of 271 university students (119 males, 152 females) by applying the theory of reasoned action (Aizen & Fishbein, 1980). A linear structural equation relation (LISREL) model was developed to verify that verbal commitment is a function of affect, and in tum, determine actual commitment. Sixty percent of the variance of verbal commitment could be explained by affect, and 19 % of actual commitment could be explained by verbal commitment; yet only a small percentage of the variance of actual commitment …

The Status Of Refugees In Lincoln, Nebraska's - Low-Income Housing And Racial Segregation: A Contribution Or Contrast To Neighborhood Solidarity?, David Baker, Kristy Feldhousen

Nebraska Anthropologist

The process of becoming a refugee is lengthy, complicated, and arduous. It involves timing, political, religiolls, and economic considerations - and luck. The United Nations High Commission for Refugee's (UNHCR) in combination with the Department of State (DOS) have established their own particular criteria for granting refugee status and placement policy. After granting refugee status, the UNHCR places the refugee into three optional resolutions: repatriation to the refugee's home country, local resettlement in the country of first asylum, and resettlemellt to a third country (US Dept of Health, 1995). 1n the post World War II era an influx of refugees …

Visions in Leisure and Business

Hallmark or mega-events have been widely hailed as opportunities to enhance the awareness and appeal of tourist destinations. Because hallmark or mega events such as the Olympic games hold the market potential for national and international tourism development, studies of host residents' support of the Olympic games hold special significance. The purpose of this study was to examine Atlanta, residents on their perceptions of the State of Georgia hosting the 1996 Olympic games. Pre and post Olympic comparisons of residents showed strong support for Georgia hosting the Olympic games, limited change is willingness to attend Olympic events, and statistically significant …

Recreation Benefits Sought By Activity And User Groups, Mary Stuart Wisnom Jan 1999

Recreation Benefits Sought By Activity And User Groups, Mary Stuart Wisnom

Visions in Leisure and Business

This research tested the relationships between benefits sought during a recreation experience, recreation activities, and user group characteristics. The data comes from an on-site self-administered survey of visitors to 13 parks in Southeast Michigan. One way analysis of variance, Scheffe's test, and Linear Regression were used to test the research objectives. The importance of different benefits varied according to user group characteristics and activities. Activity variables slightly outperformed group characteristics in predicting benefit ratings, with one exception. Groups with women rated nature enjoyment higher than men. Male only groups rated excitement higher. Socializing was rated more important by larger groups. …

Psychology In Custody Litigation, Petra Smith Jan 1999

Psychology In Custody Litigation, Petra Smith

USF St. Petersburg campus Honors Program Theses (Undergraduate)

Historically, American divorce law across the various states was based upon the moral concept of fault. The uniform presumption in a divorce case was that the perpetrator spouse owed some type of compensation to the victim spouse. Of course, this gave rise to very spectacular, but often unnecessary, litigation. Throughout the years, with the growing number of divorce cases across the country, it became obvious that such litigation had a deleterious effect on the family, especially when children were involved. Thus, in an effort to address this problem, the concept of no-fault divorce began in California in 1969, with the …

The Church Of Mulletology, Michael Mckennedy Jan 1999

The Church Of Mulletology, Michael Mckennedy

Whittier Scholars Program

In this project I aim to give a heuristic account of the punk and underground music scene’s relationship to the phenomenon known as the mullet. I do not intend to construct profile of Mullet identity,” nor is this an attempt to understand the Psychology of the mullet,” nor is this an attempt to understand the Psychology of the mullet. The mullet hairstyle exists in many forms. It can be found women, on cowboys, and generally throughout all sectors of society. But I don’t actually look at the mullet itself at all. I look at how mullet humor is constructed in …

The Perceived Effects Of Cross-Cultural Interaction On Flight Crew Training Between Anglo-Australian Flight Instructors And Asian Students, Daniel Goh Jan 1999

The Perceived Effects Of Cross-Cultural Interaction On Flight Crew Training Between Anglo-Australian Flight Instructors And Asian Students, Daniel Goh

Theses : Honours

The study investigated the perceived effects of cross-cultural interaction on ab-initio flight crew training between Anglo Australian flight instructors and Asian students. Students and instructors perceptions were sought as to whether they believed that cross-cultural interaction would impede learning. The sample included forty-eight students and nine instructors from two flying schools. Thirty-eight students were required to complete a 15 item survey and ten students and nine instructors participated in a semi-structured interview. The research identified four specific areas - language, studying and teaching methods, attitudes towards asking questions, and command decision making. Cross-cultural interaction was found to be an integral …

Attitudes To Biotechnology And Genetically Modified Food : A Review, Juliana Rose Cannon Jan 1999

Attitudes To Biotechnology And Genetically Modified Food : A Review, Juliana Rose Cannon

Theses : Honours

Debate surrounds the introduction of new biotechnological applications such as genetically modified food (GMF). With this in mind a critical review of the debate, it's emerging themes, and approaches to measurement was undertaken. The intention of this review was to argue that while existing empirical measures have advanced our understanding of attitudes to GMF, they are limited both conceptually and methodologically. Overall, the validity and reliability of research support was compromised. Conceptually, attitudes to GMF were composed of a number of potential dimensions that have yet to be measured. Adherence to sound scale construction techniques may facilitate more reliable and …

Loneliness Underneath Laughter : Aspects Of Alienation In The Early Plays Of Tom Stoppard, Steven Hounsome Jan 1999

Loneliness Underneath Laughter : Aspects Of Alienation In The Early Plays Of Tom Stoppard, Steven Hounsome

Theses : Honours

This thesis investigates the various states of alienation that exist in the early plays of the British dramatist Tom Stoppard. By first defining alienation (and discussing the areas of contention which surround the concept), it proceeds to argue that whilst Stoppard has been greatly revered as a comic writer his works are equally consequential for their sensitivity and insight. They depict a prolificacy of characters who fail to assimilate with their society, can no longer relate to those around them and, as is often the case, reach for, but never manage to grasp a sense of their own identity. The …

Masculinity, Social Support And Sense Of Community : The Mens Group Experience, Julie A. Reddin Jan 1999

Masculinity, Social Support And Sense Of Community : The Mens Group Experience, Julie A. Reddin

Theses : Honours

Recently, there has been increased attention in understanding factors that influence men's health and wellbeing. This paper examines men's wellbeing and the "male crisis' in Western Society. A brief historical overview is outlined to illustrate how social change has impacted on male gender roles. Men's role in society is discussed in relation to their response to feminism, and gender identity and the concept of masculinity as a social construction is outlined. Factors such as changing gender roles and subsequent role confusion are addressed in connection with men's health. This paper will then examine men's social support systems, with a focus …

Self Concept: Mothers And Their Children, Leanne D. Wood Jan 1999

Self Concept: Mothers And Their Children, Leanne D. Wood

Theses : Honours

Over the past 30 years divorce has been on the incline, resulting in more children living in one parent families, the majority headed by single mothers. The study of the impact of divorce and outcomes for children and their mothers has become increasingly important. According to many researchers, the study of self-concept is considered to be one of the best indicators of a person's psychological adjustment and wellbeing (Hattie, 1992; Ford, 1985). Studies have neglected to consider self-concept as a major focus and consider the relationship between the child's self-concept and their mother's self-concept. This study focuses on single mothers …

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

The purpose of this study was to examine factors that would have an impact on training development for an established workforce facing reform initiatives. A two-part literature section includes an examination of existing research from educational theory, memory research, adult development theory, cognitive psychology, organizational, industrial, and personnel psychology, and instructional design models. The result is a set of guidelines for the training program developer who is concerned about implementation of reform strategies and resistance-to-change issues. The target workforce for this study was the West Virginia public school teacher. The reform initiative was the introduction of computer technology into the …

A Comparison Of Cardiovascular Reactivity To Laboratory Stressors And Day-Night Blood Pressure Differences Assessed By 24-Hour Ambulatory Blood Pressure Monitoring., Scott Lee Schauss Jan 1999

A Comparison Of Cardiovascular Reactivity To Laboratory Stressors And Day-Night Blood Pressure Differences Assessed By 24-Hour Ambulatory Blood Pressure Monitoring., Scott Lee Schauss

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Cardiovascular reactivity (CVR) to laboratory stressors and sleep-related blood pressure changes were compared in mild hypertensive (n = 23) and normotensive (n = 30) Caucasian men and women ranging from 30 to 67 years old. None of the participants had a history of cardiovascular disease and hypertensive patients were medication free at the time of cardiovascular reactivity assessment and 24-hr ambulatory blood pressure recording. Cardiovascular reactivity to mental arithmetic and a modified Digit Symbol task and sleep-related attenuations in blood pressure and heart rate were compared using standardized residual change scores. In general, correlations between laboratory assessed CVR and sleep-related …

The Relationship Between Hypermedia Features And The Learning Style/Cognitive Control Of Hypermedia Developers., Jun Hu Jan 1999

The Relationship Between Hypermedia Features And The Learning Style/Cognitive Control Of Hypermedia Developers., Jun Hu

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

This study investigated the effect of learning style and cognitive control on hypermedia developers' perceptions and implementations of hypermedia features. The study reviewed the hypermedia features articulated by the 19 hypermedia developers in two graduate courses, as well as the implementation of those features in the final projects they produced. By using two sets of databases, those hypermedia features were categorized into 16 feature domains, and were then grouped by the developers' learning styles (diverger, assimilator, converger, and accommodator) and cognitive controls (field dependent, field mixed, and field independent). Comparisons were made on the features articulated and implemented by each …

Modification And Psychometric Examination Of A Self-Report Measure Of Fear In Older Adults., Jane Null Kogan Jan 1999

Modification And Psychometric Examination Of A Self-Report Measure Of Fear In Older Adults., Jane Null Kogan

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Very few studies have examined the concept of fear in older adults. Moreover, there is no self-report measure of fear that has been shown to be psychometrically sound for use with older individuals. The primary purposes of the present study were: (a) to develop a measure of self-reported fear that includes fears relevant to older adulthood, (b) to develop a measure for assessing daily interference associated with fears, and (c) to examine the psychometric properties of this new instrument. Secondarily, preliminary findings from Kogan and Edelstein (1997) raise the question of why some older adults report interference resulting from fear …

Mixed-Mesophytic Forest Understory Communities And Edge Effect: The Role Of Canopy Gaps In Edge Composition And Structure., Cedric Edwin Landenberger Jan 1999

Mixed-Mesophytic Forest Understory Communities And Edge Effect: The Role Of Canopy Gaps In Edge Composition And Structure., Cedric Edwin Landenberger

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Temperate forest canopy gaps are generally characterized as spatially discrete patches whose biophysical properties are a function of gap size and age acting in conjunction with subcanopy composition and structure. The surrounding gap environment is rarely considered, although there are reasons to suggest that gaps may be influenced by adjacent canopy openings such as agricultural fields, roads, and timber harvests. Experimental canopy gaps (∼75 m 2) were created adjacent to silvicultural clearcuts (∼5 ha.) in second-growth mixed-mesophytic forest to better understand the effect of clearcutting on adjacent canopy gap understones. Gaps were created on west- and south-facing edges at 15 …

Students' Perceptions Of Teachers' Communication And Its Effects On Students' Learning., Patricia Ann Burant Jan 1999

Students' Perceptions Of Teachers' Communication And Its Effects On Students' Learning., Patricia Ann Burant

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

This investigation examines the perceptions that students have of teachers' argumentativeness and verbal aggressiveness to determine if these trait behaviors in conjunction with a student's perceptions of their teacher's socio-communicative style (being their level of assertiveness and responsiveness) have an effect on the student-teacher relationship. In addition, this investigation attempts to create a model of teachers communicative behaviors which lead to students' feelings of learner empowerment and student learning. The findings of the study indicate that teacher responsiveness has significant positive impact on students, feelings of learner empowerment, students' reports of affective learning, and students' reports of less cognitive learning …
