Psychometric Properties Of Measures Of Behavioral Inhibition With Preschool -Age Children, Randy Granville Floyd Jan 1999

Psychometric Properties Of Measures Of Behavioral Inhibition With Preschool -Age Children, Randy Granville Floyd

All-Inclusive List of Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Measures of behavioral inhibition offer promise in identification of young children with ADHD. This study investigated the factorial validity, ecological validity, and temporal reliability of 6 performance-based measures of behavioral inhibition in a sample of 70 3-, 4-, and 5-year-old children. A single factor, Behavioral Inhibition, appeared to influence the scores on these measures. This factor was found to be significantly correlated with teacher ratings of aggression and inattention and to differentiate between genders and between older and younger children. Several individual measures were correlated with ratings of aggression and inattention and demonstrated adequate 1- to 2-week test-retest reliability.

The Effects Of Acute Exercise On Cognitions Related To Depression, Julia M. Lash Jan 1999

The Effects Of Acute Exercise On Cognitions Related To Depression, Julia M. Lash

All-Inclusive List of Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Exercise is known to improve mood and reduce depression. However, the mechanism(s) responsible for the antidepressent effects of exercise are not known. Cognitive therapy, one of the most effective psychological treatments of depression, is based on the assumption that changes in a person's negative thoughts will result in a remission of depression. The purpose of this study was to determine if a similar change in cognitions might occur with exercise. Self-report measures of mood (Profile of Mood States and Visual Analog Mood Scale) and depressive cognitions (Automatic Thoughts Questionnaire, Beck Self-Concept Test and Dysfunctional Attitudes Scale) were measured before and …

Assessing Career Value Of Hospitality Management Curriculum From Program Alumni, James Reid

Theses

The purpose of this study was to investigate the assessment of hospitality management baccalaureate program alumni from New York Technical College (NYCTC) as being a valuable resource to the Hospitality Management curriculum assessment effort . Through the development of an alumni questionnaire, participants in this study were asked to rate individual courses of their curriculum (both core and elective) by the degree of value each course had been in terms of usefulness to their career development and/or relevance to meeting the demands of their current positions. Although the questionnaire response rate was less than desirable, it is stressed that survey …

The Best And The Brightest: Canadian Law School Admissions, Dawna Tong, W. Wesley Pue Jan 1999

The Best And The Brightest: Canadian Law School Admissions, Dawna Tong, W. Wesley Pue

All Faculty Publications

This article assesses the admissions policies commonly employed by law faculties in common law Canada. These faculties rely heavily on admissions criteria and policies developed in the United States and, like their American counterparts, typically admit students on the basis of "index scores" produced by combining Law School Admissions Test (LSAT) performance with Undergraduate Grade Point Average (UGPA). The appropriateness of this American model to the Canadian context has never been rigorously assessed. This raises serious questions as to whether Canadian law school admissions policies serve either of their stated goals of finding the "best" students or of advancing social …

Running From The Law: Should Bounty Hunters Be Considered State Actors And Thus Subject To Constitutional Restraints?, Andrew D. Patrick Jan 1999

Running From The Law: Should Bounty Hunters Be Considered State Actors And Thus Subject To Constitutional Restraints?, Andrew D. Patrick

Vanderbilt Law Review

The issue of bounty hunter misconduct catapulted into the public spotlight in September, 1997, when a team of commando-like criminals who claimed to be searching for a bail-jumper gunned down a Phoenix couple in their own bedroom. Though the perpetrators' story was later uncovered as a hoax, and though the men would likely have been convicted of second-degree murder regardless of their profession,s their case and others like it aroused impassioned demands for bounty hunter regulation and, more radically, constitutional restraints on the bail bond industry.

Constitutional protections are applicable only against the government and "state actors." Bounty hunters have …

A Comparison Of Two Approaches Of Symbolic Modeling And Self -Efficacy, Roy James Hamilton Jan 1999

A Comparison Of Two Approaches Of Symbolic Modeling And Self -Efficacy, Roy James Hamilton

All-Inclusive List of Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The effect of video and written modeling on self-efficacy of 70 master's degree students enrolled in their first techniques course was investigated. The ability to understand and use reflection of content, feeling, and meaning was presented to the experimental group through videotaped instruction and examples and the control group through written instruction and examples. Facts about reflecting skills, which included information and three vignettes, demonstrated the use of the skills. Through two pilot studies, the Reflecting Skills Questionnaire (RSQ) developed for this study showed convergent validity with the Counseling Self-Estimate Inventory (COSE). Participants' indication of self-efficacy for the reflection of …

African-American Freshmen Student Persistence Factors In Comparison To White Freshmen Student Persistence Factors At Indiana State University, Gwendolyn Lynette Lee-Thomas

All-Inclusive List of Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The 1990 national census report revealed that Indiana ranked 47 th in the nation in regard to individuals over the age of 25 with bachelor degrees. Forty-nine percent of the 1995–96 Indiana high school graduates matriculated into Indiana higherEducation institutions—56 percent in-state and out-of-state (Indiana Commission for HigherEducation Report, 1998). However, the African-American student persistence rate is 24 percent, regarding those who attain a bachelor degree within four years compared to 51 percent for all students. However, if extended to six years, the percentage increases to 42.2 percent compared to 57.5 percent for all students. This study determined certain retention …

Critical Multiculturalism And The Globalization Of Capital: Some Implications For A Politics Of Resistance, Ramin Farahmandpur, Peter Mclaren Jan 1999

Critical Multiculturalism And The Globalization Of Capital: Some Implications For A Politics Of Resistance, Ramin Farahmandpur, Peter Mclaren

Educational Leadership and Policy Faculty Publications and Presentations

Despite the historic defeat of Marxism and constant attempts by so-called progressive educators to exorcize any residual Marxist discourse from the literature on multiculturalism, the contradictions of capital playing themselves out in the theater of contemporary social relations are beckoning Marx's spectre to return and further trouble those theories proclaiming that the "end of ideology" is upon us and that all we need to do in order to rescue humanity is to heed the clarion call of diversity. Too often overlooked in the debates over multiculturalism at present engulfing the academy are the myriad ways in which globalization is shaping …

A Study Of Teacher Behaviours As Interpreted By Low Achieving Passive Students, Carolyn Crook Jan 1999

A Study Of Teacher Behaviours As Interpreted By Low Achieving Passive Students, Carolyn Crook

Theses : Honours

This study explores the nature of low achieving, passive students' interpretations of teacher behaviour towards them, how these interpretations cluster into specific categories and the possibility of a mis-match existing between a teacher's intended behaviour and the student's interpretations of that behaviour. The sample consisted of four year five students, one female and three male students, who were selected from two Perth metropolitan schools. Ethnographic-case study methods were used to conduct the investigation which included fieldnotes, observations, video-taped observations, student interviews and informal teacher interviews. The study revealed that low achieving, passive students have varying interpretations of teacher behaviour. As …

Training Methods For Shunting Inhibitory Artificial Neural Networks, Son Lam Phung Jan 1999

Training Methods For Shunting Inhibitory Artificial Neural Networks, Son Lam Phung

Theses : Honours

This project investigates a new class of high-order neural networks called shunting inhibitory artificial neural networks (SIANN's) and their training methods. SIANN's are biologically inspired neural networks whose dynamics are governed by a set of coupled nonlinear differential equations. The interactions among neurons are mediated via a nonlinear mechanism called shunting inhibition, which allows the neurons to operate as adaptive nonlinear filters. The project's main objective is to devise training methods, based on error backpropagation type of algorithms, which would allow SIANNs to be trained to perform feature extraction for classification and nonlinear regression tasks. The training algorithms developed will …

An Investigation Of Selected Factors On Golfer Attachment, James F. Petrick Jan 1999

An Investigation Of Selected Factors On Golfer Attachment, James F. Petrick

Visions in Leisure and Business

While little change has occurred in the total number of golfers in the United States, the total number of golf courses is rapidly increasing (3). This increase in market competition has made it vital for resort owners and managers to examine the variables which influence golfers to use and return to their facilities. A relationship that appears to form between golfers and golf courses which has been neglected is place attachment. The purpose of this study was to examine whether or not place attachment actually occurs on a golf course. A second purpose was to investigate the relationship between attachment …

A Qualitative Analysis Of The Decision Making Process For Selecting Travel As A "Value-Added" Incentive, Stuart Cottrell, Kelly Bricker, Deborah Kerstetter, Peter Verhoven Jan 1999

A Qualitative Analysis Of The Decision Making Process For Selecting Travel As A "Value-Added" Incentive, Stuart Cottrell, Kelly Bricker, Deborah Kerstetter, Peter Verhoven

Visions in Leisure and Business

The purpose of this study, using a qualitative method, was to explore and identify key factors in the decision-making process that led business owners/managers to select an advertising program which included travel as a "value-added" marketing incentive. During September-November 1996, a California based adventure travel company organized two incentive travel experiences to Fiji and Kenya for radio stations in San Francisco, CA and Detroit, MI. Results indicate that a program to a unique exotic destination is a factor worth considering. Other key factors derived included safety traveling within a group, reputation of the radio station, expectation for the type of …

Potential Impacts Of A Major Sport/Tourism Event: The America's Cup 2000, Auckland, New Zealand, Mark B. Orams, Anouska Brons

Visions in Leisure and Business

The America's Cup is reputed to be the oldest international sporting competition. It has been contested between yachts representing yacht clubs of foreign nations since 1851. Team New Zealand, representing the Royal New Zealand Yacht Squadron, successfully challenged for the Cup of San Diego in 1995. In the austral summer of 1999/2000, for only the second time in history, the America's Cup will be hosted by a country other than the United States of America. The hosting of this event presents an enormous challenge for a small isolated nation like New Zealand. A record 18 syndicates have lodged entries for …

Alienation And The Motif Of The Unlived Life In Liu Heng's Fiction, Birgit Linder Jan 1999

Alienation And The Motif Of The Unlived Life In Liu Heng's Fiction, Birgit Linder

Journal of Modern Literature in Chinese 現代中文文學學報

Critics have long argued that alienation is the essence of modern culture. Having long served as a theme in literature that profoundly reflects the changes and challenges of modernity, alienation has, after a hiatus of a few decades, undergone a conceptual resurgence during the 1990’s as recent research in the West indicates a correlation with the phenomenon of postmodernity. With the breakdown of communism in vast parts of the world and the development toward pluralistic societies, the field of human possibilities has expanded considerably and the response thereof demands, therefore, a new definition of alienation. If previously alienation signified the …
