Ordinary Families -Extraordinary Care Giving, John P. Ronnau Jan 1999

Ordinary Families -Extraordinary Care Giving, John P. Ronnau

Journal of Family Strengths

Children with severe emotional problems often have multiple needs that require disparate services including child welfare, juvenile justice, health, mental health, substance abuse, and mental retardation (Stroul, 1996). However, the primary care giving responsibilities for these youngsters still remain with their families. It is the family who shelters and clothes them; provides guidance, affection, recreation, nurturing; gets them to appointments with doctors and therapists and to school dayin- and-day-out, year after year (Lourie, 1995). Despite the invaluable and irreplaceable care provided by families, they are often maligned by a system which characterizes them as having their own problems and inadequacies. …

Testing The Servqual Scale In The Business-To-Business Sector: The Case Of Ocean Freight Shipping Service, Srinivas Durvasula, Steven Lysonski, Subhash Mehta

Marketing Faculty Research and Publications

A key question is whether the instruments developed for consumer services can accurately gauge the service quality perceptions of organisational customers. Reports psychometric testing of the SERVQUAL as a measure of service quality in ocean freight services. Based on a survey of a cross-sectional sample of 114 business organisations in Singapore, which regularly utilise ocean freight services for their export needs, this study found that the psychometric properties of the SERVQUAL scale are at variance with those found in consumer services settings. Further, the SERVQUAL perceptions scores were found to be a better predictor than the SERVQUAL gap scores. In …

Predicting Smoking Cessation In Pregnant Latina And White Women, Ivory Roberts Clarke

Open Access Master's Theses

This study examined cigarette smoking patterns in a low-income sample of pregnant women. The total sample included 142 white women and 56 Latinas. The participants were recruited as current smokers and recent quitters who received prenatal care at six urban health clinics in a northeastern locale. Recent quitters were women who had quit smoking less than one year prior to contact. Predictor variables were examined for both Latinas and white women in order to identify possible differences between the two groups. These variables focused on measures of addiction, social and familial predictors, and demographic information.

Several quantitative procedures were used …

Parental Socialization And The Child's Development Of Internal Concepts Of Self And Others, Elena Sylvie Mirsky

Open Access Master's Theses

The process by which children develop internal models of the self and others has been an area of much theoretical interest. This study explored the influence of parental affective and verbal socialization messages as well as children's own mastery experiences on the child's emerging internal models of self and significant others. The goals of the study were to replicate the association between parental control style and child compliance as reported in the child development literature and to examine the relationship between child compliance and child self-concept. The sample studied consisted of 46 children and their mothers who participated in a …

Assessing Self-Efficacy Among Incarcerated Women: Scale Development And Psychemetric Properties, Cheryl Hevey Jan 1999

Assessing Self-Efficacy Among Incarcerated Women: Scale Development And Psychemetric Properties, Cheryl Hevey

Open Access Master's Theses

The increasing number of incarcerated women in the United States has created the necessity to better understand the needs of this population, so that successful correctional programs can be implemented. Programs that address these needs and are aimed at increasing relevant skills have been linked with program effectiveness. However, increasing skills alone is not enough. If these women leave prison without the necessary self-efficacy, it is likely that they will not attempt to perform these skills after release. The objective of this research was to develop a self-report questionnaire to measure self-efficacy in this population. The Self-Efficacy for Incarcerated Women …

Foster care placement is considered to be the primary placement option for children who are removed from their families for reasons of physical, sexual, and emotional abuse and neglect. Child care workers question the level of future success these children will acquire if they are not removed from their abusive environments as soon as possible. Adolescents In Residential Treatment: Characteristics And Treatment Outcome., Tad Timothy Gorske Jan 1999

Adolescents In Residential Treatment: Characteristics And Treatment Outcome., Tad Timothy Gorske

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

This study investigated the characteristics of adolescent clients in a residential program and identified which characteristics best predict treatment outcome. Adolescent characteristics were identified by reviewing 150 randomly sampled charts. Characteristics were specified on a data sheet which included the Child and Adolescent Functional Assessment Scale (CAFAS) to determine level of behavioral severity. Treatment outcome was based on discharge summaries contained in the charts. Results indicated that adolescents who are less likely to succeed in treatment (a) exhibit more severe antisocial behavior, (b) live with someone, or some placement, other than family, and (c) do not receive a combination of …

The Use Of Propositional Structures And Subgoals In Solving Multi-Step College Statistical Word And Formula Problems., Deborah Joan Hendricks

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

This experiment studied the effect of size and format of instructions given to college students enrolled in an introductory statistics course on the number of errors committed and the amount of time required in order to complete a problem. A 3 (size) by 2 (format) factorial design was used. The three sizes of instruction given were propositional structures, subgoals, and complete algorithm. The two formats used were word and formula. The dependent variables used to study errors were Completed Errors, Total Errors, and Accuracy. The dependent variables used to study time were Solution Time, Steps Attempted, Errors per Minute, and …

The Effects Of An Organizational Communication Intervention On Job Satisfaction In A Public Health Organization, Ann Kathleen Riley Jan 1999

The Effects Of An Organizational Communication Intervention On Job Satisfaction In A Public Health Organization, Ann Kathleen Riley

All Master's Theses

The purpose of this study was to determine the effects of an organizational communication intervention on job satisfaction levels. Nineteen employees of a rural public health department served as the subjects of the study. Archival data was reviewed based on a pre and postjob satisfaction questionnaire administered to subjects in relation to a communication intervention. It was hypothesized that job satisfaction levels would increase as a result of an organizational communication intervention. Results of an independent !-test analysis for overall pre and postjob satisfaction scores did not support this hypothesis. Implications of the study and recommendations for future research are …

College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations (1964–2006)

The purpose of this research was to determine if the perceptions of public secondary school principals and counselors differed as to actual and desired involvements of secondary school counselors in appropriate and inappropriate counseling program tasks.
