Piezoelectric Doping In Alingan/Gan Heterostructures, M. Asif Khan, J. W. Yang, Grigory Simin, R. Gaska, M. S. Shur, A. D. Bykovski

Faculty Publications

We report on the piezoelectricdoping and two-dimensional (2D) electron mobility in AlInGaN/GaN heterostructures grown on 6H–SiC substrates. The contribution of piezoelectricdoping to the sheet electron density was determined using an In-controlled built-in strain-modulation technique. Our results demonstrate that in strained AlGaN/GaN heterostructures, the piezoelectric field generates at least 50% of the 2D electrons. The strain modulation changes the potential distribution at the heterointerface, which, in turn, strongly affects the 2D electron mobility, especially at cryogenic temperatures. The obtained results demonstrate the potential of strain engineering and piezoelectricdoping for GaN-based electronics.

We report on the results of measurements of low frequency noise in n-type gallium nitride (GaN) grown on sapphire with 300 K electron mobility of 790 cm2/V s. The noise spectra have the form of 1/f noise with a Hooge parameter α of approximately 5×10−2. This value of α is two orders of magnitude smaller than that observed before in n-GaN. The obtained results show that the level of flicker noise in GaN, just like that in GaAs and Si, strongly depends on the structural perfection of the material (the amplitude of the 1/f …

Land Power And Dual Containment: Rethinking America's Policy In The Gulf, Stephen C. Pelletiere Dr. Nov 1999

Land Power And Dual Containment: Rethinking America's Policy In The Gulf, Stephen C. Pelletiere Dr.

Books, Monographs & Collaborative Studies

In an attempt to regain some control of the strategic commodity, Washington developed special relationships with the two foremost oil procedures, Iran (under the Shah) and Saudi Arabia. In 1979 the Shah was overthrown and, with the rise of the Ayatollah Khomeini, America became—in the eyes of Iranians—the Great Satan. By 1991, with the defeat of Iraq in the Gulf war, America was once again the dominant power in the region. But, as this study shows, America's position is hardly secure. Much of the difficulty Washington is experiencing derives from what the author regards as a poorly conceived policy. Dual …

Representative Bureaucracy And Distributional Equity: Addressing The Hard Question, Kenneth J. Meier, Robert D. Wrinkle, Jerry L. Polinard

Political Science Faculty Publications

Research on representative bureaucracy has failed to deal with whether or not representative bureaucracies produce minority gains at the expense of nonminorities. Using a pooled time-series analysis of 350 school districts over six years, this study examines the relationship between representative bureaucracy and organizational outputs for minorities and nonminorities. Far from finding that representative bureaucracy produces minority gains at the expense of nonminorities, this study finds both minority and nonminority students perform better in the presence of a representative bureaucracy. This finding suggests an alternative hypothesis to guide research: that representative bureaucracies are more effective than their nonrepresentative counterparts.

Mandatory Community Service: Citizenship Education Or Involuntary Servitude?, Susan M. Anderson Nov 1999

Mandatory Community Service: Citizenship Education Or Involuntary Servitude?, Susan M. Anderson

Service Learning, General

A popular topic of conversation lately among parents, educators, policymakers, students and the media is the isolation of young people from their communities. Many people feel schools have a responsibility to build bridges among diverse populations of children and youth, provide nonviolent problem-solving experiences and promote positive activities for young people, even during after-school hours. Involving young people in community service is seen as one potential solution. Indeed, some citizens and educators would like to ensure that all students — including those least likely to participate voluntarily but most likely to benefit from the experience — have the opportunity to …

Competence And Quality In The Training Of Teachers For The Post Compulsory Sector In The Uk , Bruce Russell, Peter Sanderson Nov 1999

Competence And Quality In The Training Of Teachers For The Post Compulsory Sector In The Uk , Bruce Russell, Peter Sanderson

Australian Journal of Teacher Education

This issue addresses the broad theme of quality learning. When we invited authors to submit papers for this special issue. we were not prescriptive about what we meant by quality learning However. we were especially interested in some aspects of learning that are particularly important to teacher education at the present time. One of these relates to the quality of the learning outcomes that are achieved by teacher education students. What sort of outcomes should prospective teachers achieve before they take on the complex task of helping others learn?

Helping Future Teachers To Be Effective Learners: Providing In Context Learning Support For First Year Teacher Education Students, Barbara De La Harpe, Alex Radloff Nov 1999

Helping Future Teachers To Be Effective Learners: Providing In Context Learning Support For First Year Teacher Education Students, Barbara De La Harpe, Alex Radloff

Australian Journal of Teacher Education

Future teachers need to be effective learners and also effective teachers of learning. However, many Teacher Education students are underprepared for university study and, as a consequence, may, not be effective learners. Thus, they need help to develop the cognitive, metacognitive, motivational and affective strategies which are needed for qualitv learning and their future teaching. Current theory and research suggests that such help is best provided by the discipline instructor in the context of regular teaching. In this paper we outline how students can be helped to be effective learners, describe how we provided such help to a group of …

Establishing Academic And Social Support Groups For Teacher Education Students, Anna M. Sullivan Nov 1999

Establishing Academic And Social Support Groups For Teacher Education Students, Anna M. Sullivan

Australian Journal of Teacher Education

Following their research into cooperative learning, Johnson and Johnson (1994) have suggested that teachers establish base groups in their classes to provide academic and social support to students. Base groups are small groups of students that meet regularly to discuss matters associated with the students' social and academic goals and progress. One of the features of base groups is that the teacher does not participate in their discussions unless specifically invited to do so. While there is some evidence that base groups are effective in providing academic and social support to school students, there is little information about their effectiveness …

Natural Hyperthermia And Expression Of The Heat Shock Protein Hsp70 Affect Developmental Abnormalities In Drosophila Melanogaster, Stephen P. Roberts, Martin E. Feder

Biological Sciences Faculty Research & Creative Works

We Demonstrate that Natural Heat Stress on Wild Larval Drosophila Melanogaster Results in Severe Developmental Defects in >10% of Eclosing Adults, and that Increased Copy Number of the Gene Encoding the Major Inducible Heat Shock Protein of D. Melanogaster, Hsp70, is Sufficient to Reduce the Incidence of Such Abnormalities. Specifically, Non-Adult D. Melanogaster Inhabiting Necrotic Fruit Experienced Severe, Often Lethal Heat Stress in Natural Settings. Adult Flies Eclosing from Wild Larvae that Had Survived Natural Heat Stress Exhibited Severe Developmental Anomalies of Wing and Abdominal Morphology, Which Should Dramatically Affect Fitness. the Frequency of Developmental Abnormalities Varied Along Two Independent …

An Investigation Of Price Discovery In Informationally-Linked Markets: Equity Trading In Malaysia And Singapore, David K. Ding, Frederick H. Harris, Sie Ting Lau, Thomas H. Mclnish

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

Using transactions data for the Kuala Lumpur Stock Exchange and the Stock Exchange of Singapore (SES) for a major Malaysian conglomerate, Sime Darby Berhad, and intraday exchange rate data, we investigate whether and to what extent each exchange contributes to price discovery. Results indicate that the price series are cointegrated. The raw data appear to indicate the presence of arbitrage opportunities, but none exist after taking exchange rate changes into account. Using the common long-memory factors of Gonzalo and Granger (1995, Journal of Business and Economic Statistics 13, 1-9), we show that while the majority of the price discovery (approximately …

Laser-Induced Stabilization Of Autoionizing States, Heider N. Ereifej, J. Greg Story Nov 1999

Laser-Induced Stabilization Of Autoionizing States, Heider N. Ereifej, J. Greg Story

Physics Faculty Research & Creative Works

Stabilization of autoionizing states of barium by laser-induced, stimulated emission of light is demonstrated. Relative to purely flourescent stabilization, the data clearly show an enhancement of the stabilization process for laser pulses short compared to the flourescent lifetime of the autoionizing states. Shakeup spectra in which the principal quantum number of both electrons changes during the stimulated emission process are also clearly demonstrated.

Structural Disorder And The Origin Of High-Tc Suppression In La1.875ba0.125cuo4, Daniel Haskel, Edward A. Stern, Fatih Dogan, Arnie R. Moodenbaugh

Materials Science and Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Polarized x-ray absorption fine structure (XAFS) measurements at all La, Pa and Cu sites were used to study local structural features that accompany the strong Tc suppression at x similar to 1/8 in La2-xBaxCuO6. Two critical parameters regulating the strength of hole-lattice coupling in this material were determined, i.e., the direction and magnitude of CuO6 octahedra local tilts. Our findings include the existence of large disorder in the magnitude of the tilt angle about its average value {theta}, with an rms {radical}{delta} {theta}{sup 2}] {approx_equal} 2{theta}. We suggest that this large disorder …
