Mackenzie Heritage Printery: A Printing Museum, Shauna Bream Nov 1999

Mackenzie Heritage Printery: A Printing Museum, Shauna Bream

Theses

Museums, in their broadest sense, are institutions which hold their possessions in trust for human kind and for the future welfare of the human race. They are a valuable asset to society in that they render the emotional and intellectual life of people. In simpler terms, it is an institution devoted to the procurement, care, and display of objects of lasting interest and value. This thesis project answers the major questions of what role does the Mackenzie Heritage Printery Museum in Queenston, Ontario Canada fit into the scheme of scholarly pursuits and the awareness of raising people's consciousness with regard …

Using The Space-Borne Nasa Scatterometer (Nscat) To Determine The Frozen And Thawed Seasons, S. Frolking, Kyle C. Mcdonald, John S. Kimball, J. B. Way, Reiner Zimmermann, Steven W. Running Nov 1999

Using The Space-Borne Nasa Scatterometer (Nscat) To Determine The Frozen And Thawed Seasons, S. Frolking, Kyle C. Mcdonald, John S. Kimball, J. B. Way, Reiner Zimmermann, Steven W. Running

Numerical Terradynamic Simulation Group Publications

We hypothesize that the strong sensitivity of radar backscatter to surface dielectric properties, and hence to the phase (solid or liquid) of any water near the surface should make space-borne radar observations a powerful tool for large-scale spatial monitoring of the freeze/thaw state of the land surface, and thus ecosystem growing season length. We analyzed the NASA scatterometer (NSCAT) backscatter from September 1996 to June 1997, along with temperature and snow depth observations and ecosystem modeling, for three BOREAS sites in central Canada. Because of its short wavelength (2.14 cm), NSCAT was sensitive to canopy and surface water. NSCAT had …

Bonjour, Kant, And The 'A Priori', Kurt Mosser Nov 1999

Bonjour, Kant, And The 'A Priori', Kurt Mosser

Philosophy Faculty Publications

In his 1985 The Structure of Empirical Knowledge, Laurence BonJour presented a compelling and articulate defense of a coherence theory of knowledge. Following what he called a “dialectical” strategy, he began by indicating the central issue at stake: the justification of empirical knowledge claims. He then argued that no available foundationalist or coherentist account could provide that justification, and that all such attempts either end in sheer dogmatism, or succumb to skepticism. After a lengthy critical discussion, he turned to developing a argument for his own view, combining a correspondence theory of truth with a coherence theory of justification. He …

Guarding Beijing's Food Security In The Qing Dynasty: State, Market, And Police, Lillian M. Li, A. Dray-Novey Nov 1999

Guarding Beijing's Food Security In The Qing Dynasty: State, Market, And Police, Lillian M. Li, A. Dray-Novey

History Faculty Works

Lillian M. Li and Alison Dray-Novey examine the different strategies the Qing state employed to ensure the food supply of Beijing in order to preserve the security of the capital. The authors show that the state relied on a variety of institutional mechanisms to supply the different groups comprising the capital's population and that it was particularly successful during the eighteenth century. They also draw instructive comparisons between Qing efforts to provision Beijing and the policies and methods used in Paris and Edo.

A Comparison Of Public Agency And Casino Employee Turnover Rates In Las Vegas, Timothy A. Clemens Nov 1999

A Comparison Of Public Agency And Casino Employee Turnover Rates In Las Vegas, Timothy A. Clemens

UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones

The primary focus of this professional paper is to determine and then compare turnover rates between public agencies and the gaming industry in the Las Vegas area. The paper's intention is to discover what differences and similarities in employee turnover rates exist between public agencies and casinos. A secondary focus is to determine if the public sector can provide any lessons to lower employee turnover to the Las Vegas gaming industry. This secondary focus is based on the assumption that public agencies have higher employee retention (and, therefore, a lower rate of turnover) than those found within the Las Vegas …

The Pulsation Properties Of Procyon A, Brian Chaboyer, P. Demarque, D. B. Guenther Nov 1999

The Pulsation Properties Of Procyon A, Brian Chaboyer, P. Demarque, D. B. Guenther

Dartmouth Scholarship

A grid of stellar evolution models for Procyon A has been calculated. These models include the best physics available to us (including the latest opacities and equation of state) and are based on the revised astrometric mass of Girard et al. Models were calculated with helium diffusion and with the combined effects of helium and heavy-element diffusion. Oscillation frequencies for l = 0, 1, 2, and 3 p-modes and the characteristic period spacing for the g-modes were calculated for these models. We find that g-modes are sensitive to model parameters that effect the structure of the core, …

United States Immigration Planning For Cross-Border Mergers And Acquisitions, Charles M. Miller Nov 1999

United States Immigration Planning For Cross-Border Mergers And Acquisitions, Charles M. Miller

San Diego Law Review

In the Article, Mr. Miller demonstrates how cross-border direct investment in the U.S. through a foreign company's acquisition of a domestic business necessitates careful immigration planning. He speaks directly to the investor and shows that a main priority is the quick and efficient transfer foreign personnel and the employment of foreign graduates. Recognizing the complexity of federal statutes and regulations governing foreign investment, the author concludes that a foreign investor will need to quickly learn that an effective immigration strategy is necessary to successfully do business in the U.S.

The Fog Of Peace: Finding The End-State Of Hostilities, Manfred K. Rotermund Mr. Nov 1999

The Fog Of Peace: Finding The End-State Of Hostilities, Manfred K. Rotermund Mr.

Books, Monographs & Collaborative Studies

The author provides us with a new way of thinking about peace and how to achieve it. Peace, he argues, arrives only when domestically centered progress is established in a post-conflict environment. The end of hostilities is only the end of the shooting. It is not the end of danger. It is not the end of the animosities or typically the conditions leading to the hostilities. As a result, the end of hostilities represents the beginning of a transition to peace—not peace itself.

Communication And Migration: How Communication Influences The Human Economy, Carol Napolitano Nov 1999

Communication And Migration: How Communication Influences The Human Economy, Carol Napolitano

Student Work

Communication and migration are tied through the common concept of community. Communication is the nervous system of a community, transmitting shared ideals, goals, and norms among citizens. Communication also is the process by which a community projects its identity or image to the outside world to attract new individuals who will nourish it economically and socially. Despite this deep connection between communication and community, migration research seldom incorporates communication theory. Likewise, communication scholars rarely look at the process of migration. The purpose of this thesis was to establish those theoretical links between communication and migration, look at how communication has …

On Advancing Truth And Morality In Conflict Resolution, Louis Kriesberg Nov 1999

On Advancing Truth And Morality In Conflict Resolution, Louis Kriesberg

Peace and Conflict Studies

Excerpt

The editors of this special issue have articulated many dilemmas facing workers in the fields of conflict analysis and resolution. One way they characterize the difficulties, described by Arthur Koestler , is balancing between spiritually-directed, but socially ineffective activism like that of a Yogi or acting like a Commissar disregarding the means used in order to achieve desirable socioeconomic transformations. This matter is often argued . Some people assert that a wellmeaning person's actions often result in undesired effects, while the person ready to act brutally provides widespread benefits. On the other hand, others argue that acting harshly in …

Cultural Pluralism, Social Justice, Peter W. Black, Kevin Avruch

Peace and Conflict Studies

Excerpt

Jim Laue was a major figure in conflict resolution and he is sorely missed. His absence is particularly regretted because his was a strong voice in discussions over the ethical dimension of conflict resolution, arguing eloquently and passionately in favor of a self-consciously ethical theory and practice of conflict resolution. Sometime colleagues of Laue, our work over the last decade has argued equally passionately (if not as eloquently) in behalf of a self-consciously cultural theory and practice of conflict resolution, (see Avruch and Black 1987, 1991, 1993; Black and Avruch 1989, 1993).

The Graduation Prayer Cases: Coercion By Any Other Name, Colin Delaney Nov 1999

The Graduation Prayer Cases: Coercion By Any Other Name, Colin Delaney

Vanderbilt Law Review

The Supreme Court's decision in Lee v. Weisman held clergy- delivered invocations at public-school graduation ceremonies unconstitutional. In the wake of this landmark case, school boards across the country instituted a variety of policies to avoid the establishmentarian attributes fatal to the prayers in Lee. Several Courts of Appeals soon heard cases involving authorities seeking to divorce themselves from speakers and speaker selection, in the apparent belief that school involvement placed the imprimatur of the state on graduation prayer. Yet two facts mark all of the situations challenged to date. First, an agent of the state, the school board, exercised …

Biotechnology And The Environment: Issues And Linkages, Sandra S. Batie, David E. Ervin Nov 1999

Biotechnology And The Environment: Issues And Linkages, Sandra S. Batie, David E. Ervin

Economics Faculty Publications and Presentations

The rapidity of change has left scant opportunity for investigation of the consequences of biotechnology adoption on long-term ecosystem or economic system functioning. Economic theory suggests that, if the "Biotechnology Revolution" is left to market forces alone, there will be neglected public goods. Theory and limited empirical evidence suggests that there are significant incentives for private firms to discount and neglect negative environmental impacts and to develop products that meet only the needs of those able and willing to pay. Negative distributional impacts on rural societies and economies will not normally enter the private calculus nor will the long-term problems …

Income Distribution, City Size, And The Role Of Public Transportation, Thomas W. Sanchez Nov 1999

Income Distribution, City Size, And The Role Of Public Transportation, Thomas W. Sanchez

Center for Urban Studies Publications and Reports

This article presents an income inequality analysis for all 1990 U.S. metropolitan statistical areas (MSAs). The analysis is concerned with whether public transportation has a detectable influence on levels of urban income equality. Because public transportation systems are generally designed to link residences with employment locations, higher levels of transit service provision, all other factors being equal, should be associated with higher employment rates and more uniform distributions of economic gains. The research presented here was influenced by an analysis originally performed by Haworth, Long, and Rasmussen (1978). Along with there study, few analyses have tried to evaluate policies that …

Reporting Crimes Against Juveniles., David Finkelhor, Richard Ormrod Nov 1999

Reporting Crimes Against Juveniles., David Finkelhor, Richard Ormrod

Crimes Against Children Research Center

The American justice system is in the midst of an effort to evaluate and reform its handling of the criminal victimization of children and youth. Juveniles are unusually vulnerable to crime victimization (Hashima and Finkelhor, 1999), but concerns have been raised about the effectiveness and sensitivity of the justice system’s response to these crimes. The findings presented in this Bulletin indicate that a majority of victimizations of juveniles ages 12 to 17 are not being reported to police or other authorities. Even serious victimizations involving weapons and injury are significantly less likely to be reported when they happen to juveniles …
