A Www Based Software Metrics Environment For Software Process Management And Software Product Quality Improvement, Xiaoqing Frank Liu, Ravi Viswanathan

Computer Science Faculty Research & Creative Works

The software process needs to be continuously improved to develop high quality software. However, with increasing specialization in the workforce and decentralization in the workplace, software process planning, monitoring, analysis and dynamic tuning in a heterogeneous distributed environment becomes a challenge. We describe a tool which takes advantage of emerging Internet technology to implement a software metrics environment for software process management and software quality improvement. The tool uses a dimensional analytic model to visualize the software development process. The system offers facilities to monitor the status and quality attributes of projects being developed at multiple sites and on multiple …

The case study is considered to be a developmental research using a longitudinal approach. The data collected in this case study were compared to the results of Salaya Chermsirivattana who conducted the same study in 1996. The instrument used in this case study was the psychometric, critical incident questionnaire, "Organizational Team Survey", developed by Boone and Killmann in 1988. The purpose of this case study was to look at …

Xerox Early Customer Engagement Process And Documentation, Carmen Bottini Jan 1999

Xerox Early Customer Engagement Process And Documentation, Carmen Bottini

Theses

This paper focused on the Early Customer Engagement (ECE/ECAT) activity that should be utilized for every new product that Xerox develops. ECE is the practice of allowing a few of Xerox more "friendly" accounts to test a product before it launched to the general public. Although the ECE practice has been in utilized for some time, a standardized process and corresponding documentation did not exist. Because of this, there has been ECE Tests that have received unfavorable grades from participants even though the actual Xerox product was satisfactory. The use of this documentation will allow Xerox to streamline the activity …

Nonlinear Constrained Optimizer And Parallel Processing For Golden Block Line Search, Duc T. Nguyen, Wilson H. Tang, Yeou K. Tung, Hakizumwami B. Runesha

Civil & Environmental Engineering Faculty Publications

Generalized exponential penalty functions are constructed for the multiplier methods in solving nonlinear programming problems. The non-smooth extreme constraint Gext is replaced by a single smooth constraint Gs by using the generalized exponential function (base a>1). The well-known K.S. function is found to be a special case of our proposed formulation. Parallel processing for Golden block line search algorithm is then summarized, which can also be integrated into our formulation. Both small and large-scale nonlinear programming problems (up to 2000 variables and 2000 nonlinear constraints) have been solved to validate the proposed algorithms.

The Revovery Of Copper And Cobalt From Oxidized Copper Ore And Converter Slag, Berri̇n Zi̇yadanoğullari, Recep Zi̇yadanoğullari

Turkish Journal of Chemistry

The aim of this study was to develop a method for obtaining copper and cobalt from oxidized copper ore and converter slag. In order to convert the copper and cobalt into sulfate compounds the main step was to roast the samples obtained by sulfurization and transfer the samples into solution. First the oxidized copper ore was roasted, followed by the mixture of converter slag and oxidized copper ore. Since the levels of copper and cobalt were low, the sulfurization process was carried out under autoclave conditions. The samples obtained were roasted. The yields of copper and cobalt passed into the …

Developing Database Applications By Using Software Components, Nusret Conk Jan 1999

Developing Database Applications By Using Software Components, Nusret Conk

College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations (1964–2006)

Today, the software application development process is more assembly work than a "build from scratch" approach. By placing pre-existing software components together, it is possible to create a complete application. Such components provide interfaces so that programs use them for their intended purposes. The objective of this thesis is to illustrate how software components work together to make a complete application. To illustrate the ideas and the components, this project presents a three-tiered web database application. This application, as a whole, is made up of the client side web browser, a database and the actual application programs which are Java …

Despite Increases, Women And Minorities Still Underrepresented In Undergraduate And Graduate S&E Education, Kristen M. Olson Jan 1999

Despite Increases, Women And Minorities Still Underrepresented In Undergraduate And Graduate S&E Education, Kristen M. Olson

Department of Sociology: Faculty Publications

Participation of women and minorities1 in science and engineering (S&E) higher education continues to rise, but this involvement is not yet equivalent to their representation in the U.S. population of 18- to 30-year-olds. In 1995, women were 50 percent of U.S. residents between the ages of 18 and 30; blacks were 14 percent; Hispanics, 13 percent; and American Indians, 0.8 percent. 2 However, in the same year, 46 percent of S&E bachelor’s degrees were earned by women, 7 percent by blacks, 6 percent by Hispanics, and 0.6 percent to American Indians. The proportions of S&E doctorates earned by these groups …

An Analysis Of Differences Among Males Choosing A Traditional As Opposed To Non -Traditional Career, Scott David Struck Jan 1999

An Analysis Of Differences Among Males Choosing A Traditional As Opposed To Non -Traditional Career, Scott David Struck

All-Inclusive List of Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The question of how men entering nontraditional careers (i.e. nursing), differ from men entering a more traditional career (i.e. technology) has not been adequately examined. Career decision-making self-efficacy, sex role identity, age, and the degree of influence on career choice of role models, perceived income, and the importance of career advancement, was examined among male nursing (n = 80) as opposed to male technology majors (n = 72). Career related self-efficacy was measured using the Career Decision-Making Self-Efficacy scale (CDMSE; Taylor & Betz, 1983), while the Bem Sex Role Inventory-Short Form (BSRI-SF; Bem, 1981) was used to measure sex role …

Capital Investment Decisions Of Large Industrial Firms In Major European Countries, Faith Yilmaz Jan 1999

Capital Investment Decisions Of Large Industrial Firms In Major European Countries, Faith Yilmaz

Plymouth Business School Theses

Using large-company panel data, this thesis empirically analyses investment decisions in major European countries. We particularly concentrate on three issues: the taxation of capital in the EU, the role of agency costs of debt on investment decisions, and the empirical analyses of the investment-uncertainty relationship. First, based on a dynamic system in capital and Tobin's q ratio, some simplified analytical results are derived to simulate various tax policy effects on investment. Also, for a single investment project, a model is developed to consider jointly the role of uncertainty and irreversibility in the taxation of capital. The simulation results cast doubt …

Investigation Of The Thickness Mode In Surface Stabilized Ferroelectric Liquid Crystal Cells, O.E. Kalinovskaya, J.K. Vij, Yu. V. Tretyakov, Yuri Panarin, Yu. P. Kalmykov Jan 1999

Investigation Of The Thickness Mode In Surface Stabilized Ferroelectric Liquid Crystal Cells, O.E. Kalinovskaya, J.K. Vij, Yu. V. Tretyakov, Yuri Panarin, Yu. P. Kalmykov

Articles

Dielectric properties of surface stabilized ferroelectric liquid crystal (SSFLC) cells have been investigated both experimentally and theoretically. The thickness mode is found to consist of two relaxation processes. A decomposition of an analytical solution of the complex dielectric permittivitye(v) in terms ofthese processesis given. Theexperimental results showagreement with theory and lead to the conclusion that the thickness mode can be separated into two processes. It has been found that the ratio of the dielectric strengths for the two processes depends on the cell thickness, and that the ratio of their frequencies is approximately equal to 10. The lower frequency process …

The Dynamic Properties Of 5cb Filled With Aerosil Particles Investigated By Pcs, F.M. Aliev, M. Kreuzer, Yuri Panarin Jan 1999

The Dynamic Properties Of 5cb Filled With Aerosil Particles Investigated By Pcs, F.M. Aliev, M. Kreuzer, Yuri Panarin

Articles

Nematic liquid crystal filled with Aerosil particles, a prospective composite material for optoelectronic application, has been investigated by static light scattering and Photon Correlation Spectroscopy (PCS). The Aerosil particles in filled nematic liquid crystals (FN) form a network structure with LC domains about 2500 Å in size with a random distribution of the director orientation of each domain. We found that the properties of 5CB are considerably affected by the network. The N-I phase transition in filled 5CB was found to be smeared out and depressed. PCS experiments show that two new relaxation processes appear in filled 5CB in addition …

The Dynamic Properties Of Confined Antiferroelectric Liquid Crystal Investigated By Photon Correlation Spectroscopy, Yuri Panarin, C. Rosenblatr, F.M. Aliev Jan 1999

The Dynamic Properties Of Confined Antiferroelectric Liquid Crystal Investigated By Photon Correlation Spectroscopy, Yuri Panarin, C. Rosenblatr, F.M. Aliev

Articles

Dynamic light scattering was used to examine ferrielectric liquid crystalline phases in porous media. Whereas in larger pores (200 Å) ferrielectric phases were observed, they were not found in the smallest pores (200 Å). Additionally, the temperatures of SmC - SmA phase transition were found to be suppressed in the pores relative to bulk, while SmCA - SmCγ phase transition is not affected by the confinement. These observations have been explained by the structural aspects of antiferroelectric liquid crystalline materials in a confined geometry and show the importance of long range electrostatic interaction for existence of ferrielectric phases.
