The Connection Between The Current Penetration-Based National Ambient Air Quality Standard And Dose Can Be Considered Questionable., Michael T. Berakis Jan 1999

The Connection Between The Current Penetration-Based National Ambient Air Quality Standard And Dose Can Be Considered Questionable., Michael T. Berakis

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

This research examined the bias between penetration (as PM2.5) and deposition (as deposited submicrometer particulate DSP) due to the variability of ambient air particle size distributions. A size mobility particle analyzer and portable dust monitor were used to measure count and mass data at three locations in Morgantown West Virginia It was found that over 50% of the median diameters are less than 1µm. A correlation between deposition and penetration was found even though the PM 2.5 criterion is not a good indication of dose. This was due to a lack of variability in the measured distributions. Further research is …

Development Of The Iowa Communications Network And Current Patterns Of Use, Stacey Lang Jan 1999

Development Of The Iowa Communications Network And Current Patterns Of Use, Stacey Lang

Graduate Research Papers

During the middle 1980s there were several issues which faced the state. Declining enrollments, teacher shortages, funding issues, transportation issues and the poor economy were problems facing all school administrators, especially the administrator of the rural school district. Along with these issues, the state department of public instruction had also placed additional mandates on schools. There was a need to equalize the course offerings and available resources of the state's 80% rural population. Distance learning projects were becoming part of the Iowa countryside, however, legislators saw the need to focus in one direction, thus the inception of the Iowa Communications …

A Benchmarking Study Of The Lehigh Valley, Jason Faberman, Stephanie Laski Jan 1999

A Benchmarking Study Of The Lehigh Valley, Jason Faberman, Stephanie Laski

University Avenue Undergraduate Journal of Economics

This study benchmarks the Lehigh Valley to nine other metropolitan areas within the United States. These areas represent a wide array of economic growth levels. Charlotte, Portland, Seattle, and Nashville represented high growth cities. Minneapolis and Lancaster represented moderate growth cities. Hartford, Flint, Rochester and the Lehigh Valley represented low growth cities. Three analyses attempted to identify reasons for economic growth. The study period included the years 1970 through 1995. All three analyses looked at regional growth relative to the nation. A study of each region’s industry mix compared the diversity of this mix to the overall employment growth of …

Comparative Analysis Of Max-Planck Gesellschaft And Akademie Der Wissenschften In The Years 1945-1989, Victoria Kats Jan 1999

Comparative Analysis Of Max-Planck Gesellschaft And Akademie Der Wissenschften In The Years 1945-1989, Victoria Kats

University Avenue Undergraduate Journal of Economics

The Realm of Science claims to be an autonomous entity, governed by its own rules and institutions. In practice it is difficult to test the extent to which different enveloping political systems affect economics of basic research, as too many cultural and historical differences would distort such a comparison. Unique historical circumstances make East and West Germany the best available ground for setting up an experiment with both experimental and control groups within societies and organizations. Testing the influence of socialistic pressure on economic performance of scientific institutions, the analysis of East German Academy of Sciences and West German Max …

Gender Differences In The Causes Of Non-Completion Rates Among Oregon Apprentices: A Case Study Of The Metro Electrical Jtpc, Portland, Oregon, Kerstin Rock Jan 1999

Gender Differences In The Causes Of Non-Completion Rates Among Oregon Apprentices: A Case Study Of The Metro Electrical Jtpc, Portland, Oregon, Kerstin Rock

University Avenue Undergraduate Journal of Economics

This paper will address the question of why women drop out of apprenticeship programs at a higher frequency than men. I will examine if there are in fact substantial differences in human capital and social characteristics between female and male apprentices and whether the influence of these characteristics on the probability of finishing depends on the sex of the apprentice. I hypothesize that the reasons apprentices quit prematurely will differ significantly between sexes, especially in reference to educational background, experience, and family situation.

Application Of Pvd Coatings To Enhance The Wear Life Of Needles Used In The Textile Industry, Neil Donnelly Jan 1999

Application Of Pvd Coatings To Enhance The Wear Life Of Needles Used In The Textile Industry, Neil Donnelly

Masters

Needles are used in the textile industry for weaving. In high volume textile production a problem is wear of the needle eyelet as the threat is pulled through. This wear results in a cost to the textile manufacturer both in needle replacement, but in many cases more importantly, lost production during needle substitution The objective of this study was to examine the potential of wear resistant coatings deposited using the magnetron sputtering technique to increase the life-time of textile needles. Four coatings were evaluated, titanium nitride, titanium carbonitride, titanium diamond-like carbon and a novel coating titanium nitride/molybdenum disulphide. These coatings …

A Comparison Of Efficiency Measurement Using Data Envelopment Analysis And Regression In The Utility Industry, Janice Forrester, Timothy R. Anderson Jan 1999

A Comparison Of Efficiency Measurement Using Data Envelopment Analysis And Regression In The Utility Industry, Janice Forrester, Timothy R. Anderson

Engineering and Technology Management Faculty Publications and Presentations

It is the intent of this paper to discuss the theoretical differences between the manner in which regression and data envelopment analysis (DEA) separate variation into that which is caused by noise and that caused by inefficiency. It examines the empirical results of independent studies, one that used regression and one that used DEA. The studies were performed one year apart by independent teams using the same data and responding to the same questions. Both studies focus on monitoring the efficiency of the electric utility providers in light of deregulation

A New Technique For Estimating Confidence Intervals On Dea Efficiency Estimates, Janice Forrester, Timothy R. Anderson Jan 1999

A New Technique For Estimating Confidence Intervals On Dea Efficiency Estimates, Janice Forrester, Timothy R. Anderson

Engineering and Technology Management Faculty Publications and Presentations

A new approach to chance constrained DEA is described and experimental results are given for calculating a confidence band for the estimated production function. This allows an interval containing the most likely production function, to be specified with a predetermined level of confidence.

Interconnection And Network Access, Gunter Knieps Jan 1999

Interconnection And Network Access, Gunter Knieps

Fordham International Law Journal

The purpose of this Essay is to focus on the role of market power where interconnection and network access problems are involved. The Essay is organized by parts. Part I sketches the European Union history with respect to open network provision (“ONP”) policy. In Part II, the market-share concept of market power applied within Council Directive 97/33, European Community on Interconnection in Telecommunications of June 30, 1997 (“Interconnection Directive”) is criticized as an important source for an oversized regulatory basis. Instead, the criteria for an economically justified disaggregated regulatory framework for the ONP concept is pointed out in order to …
