Comparative Evaluation Of Cotesia Flavipes And C. Sesamiae (Hymenoptera: Braconidae) For The Management Of Chilo Partellus (Lepidoptera: Pyralidae) In Kenya, M. N. Sallam, W. A. Overholt, E. Kairu Jan 1999

Comparative Evaluation Of Cotesia Flavipes And C. Sesamiae (Hymenoptera: Braconidae) For The Management Of Chilo Partellus (Lepidoptera: Pyralidae) In Kenya, M. N. Sallam, W. A. Overholt, E. Kairu

All Peer-Reviewed Publications

Cotesia flavipes Cameron, a gregarious larval endoparasitoid native to the Indo-Australian region, was imported from Pakistan and released in Kenya in 1993 for management of the exotic stemborer, Chilo partellus (Swinhoe). Recent reports confirmed the successful establishment of the parasitoid in three locations in Kenya and in northern Tanzania. Functional response studies on this parasitoid and an indigenous congener, Cotesia sesamiae (Cameron), indicated that C. flavipes had a higher searching ability and attacked more larvae when Chilo partellus was the host. When a native stemborer, Sesamia calamistis Hampson, was the host, there was no significant difference between numbers attacked by …

Downloading Medical Images on the Web Creates Certain Compromises. the Tradeoff is between Higher Resolution and Faster Download Times. as Resolution Increases, Download Times Increase. High-resolution (Photographic Quality) Electronic Images Can Potentially Play a Key Role in Medical Education and Patient Care. on the Internet, Images Are Typically Formatted as Graphics Interchange Format (GIF) or the Joint Photographic Experts Group (JPEG) Flies. However, These Formats Are Associated with Considerable Data Loss in Both Color Depth and Image Resolution. Furthermore, These Images Are Available in a Single Resolution and Have No Capability of Allowing the User to Adjust Resolution as Needed. …

A Model-Based Approach For Compression Of Fingerprint Images, Fikret Erçal, M. Gokmen, Ilker Ersoy Jan 1999

A Model-Based Approach For Compression Of Fingerprint Images, Fikret Erçal, M. Gokmen, Ilker Ersoy

Computer Science Faculty Research & Creative Works

We propose a new fingerprint image compression scheme based on the hybrid model of an image. Our scheme uses the essential steps of a typical automated fingerprint identification system (AFIS) such as enhancement, binarization and thinning to encode fingerprint images. The decoding process is based on reconstructing a hybrid surface by using the gray values on ridges and valleys. In this compression scheme, the ridge skeleton is coded efficiently by using differential chain codes. The valley skeleton is derived from the ridge skeleton and the gray values along the ridge and valley skeletons are encoded using the discrete cosine transform. …

The Brine Shrimp Artemia Franciscana In Closed Microalgal-Based Microcosms (Biospheres), Rachel L. Yung, Mark A. Gouthro, James R. Rosowski Jan 1999

The Brine Shrimp Artemia Franciscana In Closed Microalgal-Based Microcosms (Biospheres), Rachel L. Yung, Mark A. Gouthro, James R. Rosowski

Transactions of the Nebraska Academy of Sciences and Affiliated Societies

The purpose of this study was to examine the effects of three experimental variables on the stability and fecundity of a brine-shrimp community in a closed, micro algal-based microcosm. Xenic microalgal cultures and brine shrimp (Artemia franciscana Kellogg) in 300-cc acrylic spheres (referred to as biospheres or microcosms) were subjected to three experimental variables: (1) the culture volume (150 ml or 250 ml), (2) presence or absence of daily culture mixing (sphere rotation), and (3) a microcosm atmosphere that was either closed or open to the surrounding atmosphere. Each sphere started with 200 brine shrimp cysts and the microalga …

Electron Liquid Beyond The Random Phase Approximation, Mehmet Tomak, Ceyhun Bulutay Jan 1999

Electron Liquid Beyond The Random Phase Approximation, Mehmet Tomak, Ceyhun Bulutay

Turkish Journal of Physics

A deeper understanding of low-dimensional and small-scale electronic systems requires an accurate characterization of the many-electron effects. Based on the electron liquid (EL) model, these many-body effects in the three-dimensional (3D) and two-dimensional (2D) electronic systems are dealt going beyond the random phase approximation within the zero-temperature framework. The dielectric formulation of the many-body problem is recapitulated and the longitudinal dielectric function of the EL is obtained using the self-consistent local-field correction scheme, known as STLS, under a general spin-valley degeneracy. Extensive explicit expressions are provided for the use of other researchers. The performance of this formalism is compared in …

Magnetic Excitations In Random Anisotropic Magnets, İbrahim Avgin Jan 1999

Magnetic Excitations In Random Anisotropic Magnets, İbrahim Avgin

Turkish Journal of Physics

A study is made for the magnetic excitations and their Anderson localization properties for a Heisenberg ferromagnet with random anisotropic fields. The system is assumed to be in a strong applied field so that complete spin alignment is established. The magnetic excitations, i.e., the harmonic spin waves, are computed using coherent-field-anisotropy approximation (a version of coherent potential approximation of the electronic problem). The spin wave shift and damping are calculated using the computed coherent field which is a complex function of energy approximating the random medium as a mean field level. The localizaton of the excitations are calculated by adopting …

Games Leaders Play: Collaborative Leadership Development Through Simulations In Knowledge-Based Organizations, John Paul Dentico Edd Jan 1999

Games Leaders Play: Collaborative Leadership Development Through Simulations In Knowledge-Based Organizations, John Paul Dentico Edd

Dissertations

New concepts of leadership and new methods of imparting these concepts to individuals are needed in the knowledge society of today. This study presented a practitioners model of collaborative leadership and a new experiential simulation methodology called LeadSimrn as a way in which organization members could learn this new model of leadership and develop confidence in its ability to engage complex issues. Using the LeadSimm simulation method, two scenarios were developed and two simulations were played. The San Jose Police Department played one simulation and the Economic Development Institute of the World Bank played the other. The researcher conducted eighteen …

Dam Nation: A Geographic Census Of American Dams And Their Large-Scale Hydrologic Impacts, William L. Graf Jan 1999

Dam Nation: A Geographic Census Of American Dams And Their Large-Scale Hydrologic Impacts, William L. Graf

Faculty Publications

Newly available data indicate that darns fragment the fluvial system of the continental United States and that their impact on river discharge is several times greater than impacts deemed likely as a result of global climate change. The 75,000 dams in the continental United States are capable of storing a volume of water almost equaling one year's mean runoff, but there is considerable geographic variation in potential surface water impacts. In some western mountain and plains regions, darns can store more than 3 year's runoff, while in the Northeast and Northwest, storage is as little as 25% of the annual …

Creating A New University Through Object Oriented Enterprise Modeling: A Study Of Communications Knowledge Management & Distributed Cognition, Armando A. Arias Jr., Beryl L. Bellman

SSGS Faculty Publications and Presentations

Enterprise based object oriented (OO) and Unified Modeling Language (UML) modeling makes it possible to build the needed visual environments to organize people, technologies and activities (Arias, 1999d). In our modeling approach, the focus is on "things and relationships between things" described in commonly used terms. The modeling software bridges the so-called "semantic gap" between the people and the computer language (Booch, Rumbaugh & Jacobson, 1999). An object can be a product, a process, a person, a team, a company, an application or the inter-relationship between other objects. Objects can be pictured on the screen as maps formed by personalized …
