The Network Desktop Of The Purdue University Network Computing Hubs, Nirav H. Kapadia, José A. B. Fortes

Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering Technical Reports

A computing system that is universally accessible and is able to harness networked resources a,s and when necessary ca,n be said to provide computing on demand. This report describes and evaluates the design of a network desktop infrastructure tha,t provides access to distributed operating system services via standard world-wide web lsrowsers. Unmodified browsers can be used to access and use the desktop because it zippears as a normal web server to t'hem; the semantics associated with computing services are supported by treating URLs as locations in a dynamic, virtual, and sideeffect based address space. The desktop interface is not hard-wir'ed …

Heuristics And A Mathematical Framework For Scheduling Data Requests In A Distributed Communication Network , Mitchell D. Theyst, Min Tan, Noah B. Beck, H. J. Siegel Purdue University School Of Electrical And Computer Engineering, Michael Jurczyk

Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering Technical Reports

Providing up-to-date input to users' applications is an important data managemerit problem for a distributed computing environment, where each data storage location and intermediate node may have specific clata available, storage limitations, and communication links available. Sites in the network request data items and each request has an associated deadline and priority. In a military situation, the data staging problem involves positioning data for facilitating a faster access time when it is, needed by programs that will aid in decision making. This work concentrates on solving a basic version of the clata staging problem in which all parameter values for …

The Self In ‘Fieldwork’: A Methodological Concern, Christie L. Fox, Beverly Stoeltje, Stephen Olbrys

As concepts of reflexivity and postcolonial perspectives have advanced our understandings of the way we represent those we study, they have also introduced a consciousness of the role of the self in research. This article reviews the history of the field of folklore with regard to the method of obtaining data or texts and demonstrates that collecting material contrasts with the practice of conducting research in the field. Pointing to a moment of transition, it shows that theories of folklore had to undergo significant change before methods of research would acknowledge the identity of the fieldworker and its significance.

Fiber Digestion Dynamics Of Sward Components Within Switchgrass Populations, Daren D. Redfearn, Kenneth J. Moore, Kenneth P. Vogel, Steven S. Waller, Robert B. Mitchell Jan 1999

Fiber Digestion Dynamics Of Sward Components Within Switchgrass Populations, Daren D. Redfearn, Kenneth J. Moore, Kenneth P. Vogel, Steven S. Waller, Robert B. Mitchell

United States Department of Agriculture-Agricultural Research Service / University of Nebraska-Lincoln: Faculty Publications

Forage quality as it relates to plant maturity is well established; however, strategies for improving fiber digestion in switchgrass populations have not been determined. The objectives of this study were to determine fiber digestion of sward components within switchgrass (Panicum virgatum L.) populations and which aspects of fiber digestion dynamics caused in vitro dry matter disappearance (IVDMD) differences of six switchgrass populations. This study was conducted in 1993 near Ames, IA, and Mead, NE. The experimental design was a randomized complete block design with a split-plot arrangement of treatments with four replicates at each location. Whole plots were populations …

Identifying Stored-Grain Insects Using Near-Infrared Spectroscopy, F. E. Dowell, James E. Throne, D. Wang, J. E. Baker

United States Department of Agriculture-Agricultural Research Service / University of Nebraska-Lincoln: Faculty Publications

Proper identification of insects in grain storage facilities is critical for predicting development of pest populations and for making management decisions. However, many stored-grain insect pests are difficult to identify, even for trained personnel. We examined the possibility that near-infrared (NIR) spectroscopy could be used for taxonomic purposes based on the premise that every species may have a unique chemical composition. Tests were conducted with 11 species of beetles commonly associated with stored grain. Spectra from individual insects were collected by using a near-infrared diode-array spectrometer. Calibrations were developed by using partial least squares analysis and neural networks. The neural …

Report Of The Brassica Crops Working Group, Chris Neeser Jan 1999

Report Of The Brassica Crops Working Group, Chris Neeser

United States Department of Agriculture-Agricultural Research Service / University of Nebraska-Lincoln: Faculty Publications

The Brassicaceae family comprises about 3000 species, the majority of which are found in the Northern Hemisphere. Many common agricultural weeds, such as Brassica nigra (L.) Koch, Brassica rapa L., Cardaria draba (L.) Desv., Raphanus raphanistrum L., and Sinapis arvensis L., belong to this family. The most important crop species from this family are the oilseed Brassicas; Brassica napus L., B rapa L., and B juncea Coss., which are generally referred to as rapeseed, oilseed rape, or canola. Other widely cultivated species in this family are: B. oleracea L. (cabbage, kale, kohlrabi, Brussels sprouts, cauliflower, and broccoli), B. chinensis L. …

Report Of The Grains Working Group (Rice, Sorghum And Wheat), Donna Mitten Jan 1999

Report Of The Grains Working Group (Rice, Sorghum And Wheat), Donna Mitten

United States Department of Agriculture-Agricultural Research Service / University of Nebraska-Lincoln: Faculty Publications

The grains working group identified three crops which have sexually compatible weedy relatives likely to be subject to gene flow in US agricultural systems (Table 1). The ease of cross pollination and the successful production of a fertile hybrid vary with each case. If the selective advantage of an introduced trait is positive, however, introgression of the new trait into an existing weed population is possible. The risk of ecological harm is then dependent upon the habitat of the weed. In the crop-weed complexes considered here, in which the habitat of the weedy relative is limited to agricultural systems, the …

Comparison Of Imaging Geometries For Diffuse Optical Tomography Of Tissue, Brian W. Pogue, Troy O. Mcbride, Ulf L. Osterberg, Keith D. Paulsen

Dartmouth Scholarship

Images produced in six different geometries with diffuse optical tomography simulations of tissue have been compared using a finite element-based algorithm with iterative refinement provided by the NewtonRaphson approach. The source-detector arrangements studied include (i) fan-beam tomography, (ii) full reflectance and transmittance tomography, as well as (iii) sub-surface imaging, where each of these three were examined in a circular and a flat slab geometry. The algorithm can provide quantitatively accurate results for all of the tomographic geometries investigated under certain circumstances. For example, quantitatively accurate results occur with sub-surface imaging only when the object to be imaged is fully contained …
