Assessing Career Value Of Hospitality Management Curriculum From Program Alumni, James Reid

Theses

The purpose of this study was to investigate the assessment of hospitality management baccalaureate program alumni from New York Technical College (NYCTC) as being a valuable resource to the Hospitality Management curriculum assessment effort . Through the development of an alumni questionnaire, participants in this study were asked to rate individual courses of their curriculum (both core and elective) by the degree of value each course had been in terms of usefulness to their career development and/or relevance to meeting the demands of their current positions. Although the questionnaire response rate was less than desirable, it is stressed that survey …

Investigation Of On-Demand Digital Printing For The Needs Of Mine Safety Appliances Co., Cathy Mcdonald

Theses

The printing needs of Mine Safety Appliances Co. (MSA) along with the definition and functions of ondemand digital printing seemed to be complimentary. Not only can digital presses improve turn around times, but they are also said to be economical for short print runs. Therefore, the focus of this study was to evaluate several on-demand digital printers and determine which press was most appropriate for MSA. After investigation, it was determined while no one press satisfied all of the areas, the Indigo Omnius met the most needs. The Omnius could save time and money printing bags, labels, and a variety …

Collective Bargaining Agreements, Arbitration Provisions And Employment Discrimination Claims: Compulsory Arbitration Or Judicial Remedy - Johnson V. Bodine Electric Co., Ann E. Ahrens Jan 1999

Collective Bargaining Agreements, Arbitration Provisions And Employment Discrimination Claims: Compulsory Arbitration Or Judicial Remedy - Johnson V. Bodine Electric Co., Ann E. Ahrens

Journal of Dispute Resolution

This casenote addresses the effect of mandatory arbitration provisions in collective bargaining agreements (CBA) upon statutory anti-discrimination claims. Disputes in this area arise when an employee joins a union, thus becoming subject to a CBA negotiated between the union and the employees. What often happens is that the CBA will generally contain a clause calling for arbitration of all claims arising under the agreement. Later, if the employee believes he has been subjected to discriminatory practices on the part of the employer and seeks remedies under anti-discrimination laws, such as Title VII, the employer will move to compel arbitration. The …

The Best And The Brightest: Canadian Law School Admissions, Dawna Tong, W. Wesley Pue Jan 1999

The Best And The Brightest: Canadian Law School Admissions, Dawna Tong, W. Wesley Pue

All Faculty Publications

This article assesses the admissions policies commonly employed by law faculties in common law Canada. These faculties rely heavily on admissions criteria and policies developed in the United States and, like their American counterparts, typically admit students on the basis of "index scores" produced by combining Law School Admissions Test (LSAT) performance with Undergraduate Grade Point Average (UGPA). The appropriateness of this American model to the Canadian context has never been rigorously assessed. This raises serious questions as to whether Canadian law school admissions policies serve either of their stated goals of finding the "best" students or of advancing social …

Unseen Influence: Lucretia Blankenburg And The Rise Of Philadelphia Reform Politics In 1911, Drew Vandecreek Jan 1999

Unseen Influence: Lucretia Blankenburg And The Rise Of Philadelphia Reform Politics In 1911, Drew Vandecreek

Faculty Articles, Papers, and Other Scholarship

Lucretia Blankenburg successfully made women a crucial element of her husband Rudolph's successful campaign to become Mayor of Philadelphia in 1911. Although the reform candidate did not enjoy the use of the type of political organization provided to major-party candidates, he benefited from the efforts of many of the city's club women. Many lobbied their husbands and other male relatives on behalf of Blankenburg's candidacy. The candidate also employed maternalist themes of good city management and civic purity in his campaign. Most significantly, women's clubs provided Rudolph Blankenburg with a large number of volunteers who made house-to-house canvasses, raised funds, …

Guide For Developing Integrated Aquatic Vegetation Management Plans In Oregon, Maribeth Gibbons, Mark Rosenkranz, Harry L. Gibbons, Mark Sytsma

Center for Lakes and Reservoirs Publications and Presentations

This manual focuses on controlling nuisance aquatic plants, occurring in Oregon lakes. To use this manual, it is necessary to distinguish between an aquatic plant problem, and a water quality enrichment problem that typically results in excessive algae production (See Box this page). The most serious type of aquatic plant problem is caused by invasion of a waterbody by a non-native species. Non-native weed invaders may flourish in suitable conditions and degrade habitat and other beneficial uses. The biology and ecology of weeds allows them to fluorish under a wide range of conditions. Nutrient enrichment is not a prerequisite for …

Interpreting The Income Tax Act - Part 1: Interpretive Doctrines, David G. Duff Jan 1999

Interpreting The Income Tax Act - Part 1: Interpretive Doctrines, David G. Duff

All Faculty Publications

This two-part article discusses the various doctrines to which Canadian courts have referred in interpreting the Income Tax Act, evaluates these doctrines, and proposes an alternative "pragmatic" approach that offers a more open, reasoned, and balanced method of statutory interpretation than each of the alternatives otherwise available. Part 1 of the article reviews the four main doctrines applied by Canadian courts in interpreting the Income Tax Act: strict construction, purposive interpretation, the plain meaning rule, and the words-in-total context approach. After the characteristics of each of these four doctrines have been explained, the article examines leading tax cases in which …

African-American Freshmen Student Persistence Factors In Comparison To White Freshmen Student Persistence Factors At Indiana State University, Gwendolyn Lynette Lee-Thomas

All-Inclusive List of Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The 1990 national census report revealed that Indiana ranked 47 th in the nation in regard to individuals over the age of 25 with bachelor degrees. Forty-nine percent of the 1995–96 Indiana high school graduates matriculated into Indiana higherEducation institutions—56 percent in-state and out-of-state (Indiana Commission for HigherEducation Report, 1998). However, the African-American student persistence rate is 24 percent, regarding those who attain a bachelor degree within four years compared to 51 percent for all students. However, if extended to six years, the percentage increases to 42.2 percent compared to 57.5 percent for all students. This study determined certain retention …

Ruby Films As Surface Temperature And Pressure Sensors, Ursula J. Gibson, Maxim Chernuschenko Jan 1999

Ruby Films As Surface Temperature And Pressure Sensors, Ursula J. Gibson, Maxim Chernuschenko

Dartmouth Scholarship

Epitaxial films of chromium doped alumina, 0.3 microns in thickness, were grown on single crystal sapphire substrates for use as surface thermometers. Curve fitting was performed on the R1 and R2 fluorescence peaks, and the line widths and peak shifts were used to determine the temperature of the surface during sliding contact with a variety of plastic bearings. Temperatures could be determined with a repeatability of 2 degrees C, and adequate signal for temperature determination could be obtained in 30-100 msec. in dots that were 200 microns in diameter, using a 0.25 watt argon laser. Both average (nominal) and local …

Embed[D]Ed Zerotree Codec, Karma Wangdi

Theses : Honours

This thesis discusses the findings of the final year project involving the VHDL (V= Very High Speed Integrated Circuit, Hardware Description Language) design and simulation of an EZT (Embedded Zero Tree) codec. The basis of image compression and the various image compression techniques that are available today have been explored. This provided a clear understanding of image compression as a whole. An in depth understanding of wavelet transform theory was vital to the understanding of the edge that this transform provides over other transforms for image compression. Both the mathematics of it and how it is implemented using sets of …

Training Methods For Shunting Inhibitory Artificial Neural Networks, Son Lam Phung Jan 1999

Training Methods For Shunting Inhibitory Artificial Neural Networks, Son Lam Phung

Theses : Honours

This project investigates a new class of high-order neural networks called shunting inhibitory artificial neural networks (SIANN's) and their training methods. SIANN's are biologically inspired neural networks whose dynamics are governed by a set of coupled nonlinear differential equations. The interactions among neurons are mediated via a nonlinear mechanism called shunting inhibition, which allows the neurons to operate as adaptive nonlinear filters. The project's main objective is to devise training methods, based on error backpropagation type of algorithms, which would allow SIANNs to be trained to perform feature extraction for classification and nonlinear regression tasks. The training algorithms developed will …

Internet Resource Management And Pricing, Christopher J. Clark Jan 1999

Internet Resource Management And Pricing, Christopher J. Clark

Theses : Honours

Originally conceived and funded as a research project, the Internet has grown into a commercial, global and integrated service network. This has changed the nature of traffic on the Internet with the increasing use of things like video conferencing and time critical transactions. These forms of Internet usage place high demands on bandwidth. Added to this is the fact that the number of users is increasing at a dramatic rate and shows no signs of slowing. This is leading to a 'tragedy of the commons' where endemic congestion will reduce the value of the Internet to everyone. It also implies …

The Western Australian Environmental Protection Authority (Epa) : Its Structure, Functions And Performance 1971-1996, Vincent Cusack Jan 1999

The Western Australian Environmental Protection Authority (Epa) : Its Structure, Functions And Performance 1971-1996, Vincent Cusack

Theses : Honours

This study examines the effectiveness of the Western Australian Environmental Protection Authority (EPA), from its inception in 1971 to 1996. While environmental concerns have risen considerably in recent times, environmental awareness can be traced back to early historical beginnings. Yet, despite this initial awareness it took some time before environmental problems permeated the public consciousness, to occupy the political agenda. However, in the early 1970s, governments throughout the First World responded to research and heightened awareness of environmental concerns, with specific legislation to protect the environment. A common feature of the legislation, was the provision for a main administrative body …

Potential Impacts Of A Major Sport/Tourism Event: The America's Cup 2000, Auckland, New Zealand, Mark B. Orams, Anouska Brons

Visions in Leisure and Business

The America's Cup is reputed to be the oldest international sporting competition. It has been contested between yachts representing yacht clubs of foreign nations since 1851. Team New Zealand, representing the Royal New Zealand Yacht Squadron, successfully challenged for the Cup of San Diego in 1995. In the austral summer of 1999/2000, for only the second time in history, the America's Cup will be hosted by a country other than the United States of America. The hosting of this event presents an enormous challenge for a small isolated nation like New Zealand. A record 18 syndicates have lodged entries for …
