ABOUT THE TEST REPORT AND USE OF THE DATA The test data contained in this report are a tabulation of the results of a series of tests. Due to the restricted format of these pages, only a limited amount of data and not all of the tractor specifications are included. The full OECD report contains usually about 30 pages of data and specifications. The test data were obtained for each tractor under similar conditions and therefore, provide a means of comparison of performance based on a limited set of reported data. Redevelopment Strategies For The Usx/Cement Plant Site In Duluth, Minnesota,, Kirstin Toth, Donald T. Iannone

All Maxine Goodman Levin School of Urban Affairs Publications

In May 1999, the Great Lakes Environmental Finance Center (GLEFC) conducted a strategy-building workshop in Duluth, Minnesota. The purpose of the workshop was to assist the City of Duluth in its efforts to develop actions leading to the successful redevelopment of the USX/Cement Plant site. Particular emphasis was placed on financing strategies pertinent to properties with a history of environmental contamination, often characterized as brownfields. Due to its long history as an industrial site, the 65-acre Cement Plant had its share of perceived environmental contamination, as well as real contaminants detected during previous site assessments and a current Phase I …

Functional Analysis: Deriving Systems Knowledge From Bibliographic Information Resources, R. Watts, A. Porter, Cherie C. Trumbach Jan 1999

Functional Analysis: Deriving Systems Knowledge From Bibliographic Information Resources, R. Watts, A. Porter, Cherie C. Trumbach

Management Faculty Publications

Analyses of particular technology developments provide vital managerial intelligence. Framing of such analyses is key to maximize their managerial value. This paper presents a case analysis of automotive fuel efficiency technologies, posed as a functional analysis, rather than as a technology analysis. This functional perspective provides a systems frame of reference, yielding enhanced managerial knowledge. The case illustrates the use of bibliometric methods to glean systems intelligence from large abstract databases.

A Comparison Of Networked Data Acquisition Devices And Their Capabilities, Jon H. Anderson Jan 1999

A Comparison Of Networked Data Acquisition Devices And Their Capabilities, Jon H. Anderson

Graduate Research Papers

The invention and extensive usage of digital electronics, microprocessors, and communication networks has resulted in significant changes to the process of gathering information. One indication of this is the popularity of the Internet, or aptly named information highway. Another indication is the increased availability of low cost equipment to gather, process, and transfer data (Masi, 1999). The measurement professional now has a large variety of hardware, software, and communication protocols from which to choose to best fit an application. These applications may require the use of a networked data acquisition device. This study was prompted by the need to evaluate …

Modeling And Simulating Chemical Weapon Dispersal Patterns In Dirsig, Peter Arnold Jan 1999

Modeling And Simulating Chemical Weapon Dispersal Patterns In Dirsig, Peter Arnold

Theses

Fieldable thermal infrared hyperspectral imaging spectrometers have made it possible to design and construct new instruments for better detection of battlefield hazards such as chemical weapon clouds. The availability of spectroscopic measurements of these clouds can be used not only for the detection and identification of specific chemical agents but also to potentially quantify the lethality of the cloud. The simulation of chemical weapon dispersal patterns in a synthetic imaging environment offers significant benefits to sensor designers. Such an environment allows designers to easily develop trade spaces to test detection and quantification algorithms without the need for expensive and dangerous …

Colonialism And Modern Constructions Of Race: A Preliminary Inquiry, Tayyab Mahmud Jan 1999

Colonialism And Modern Constructions Of Race: A Preliminary Inquiry, Tayyab Mahmud

Faculty Articles

This article aims at an examination of the colonial career of the modern construction of race and its traces in post-coloniality. It locates race in regimes of legality and illegality attendant to British colonial rule over India to underscore the defining role of colonialism in modern constructions of race. The first part recounts the modern grammar of racial difference rooted in the colonial encounter between modern Europe and its colonies. The second part identifies three specific sites of deployment of colonial racial stereotypes in colonial India, namely, "martial races," "criminal tribes," and indentured labor. The last part traces the shadow …

From Little Acorns Great Oaks Grow: The Constitutionality Of Protecting Minors From Harmful Internet Material In Public Libraries Comment., Kimberly S. Keller

St. Mary's Law Journal

Congress should focus on the receiver's end of Internet transmissions to overcome the anonymity and transmogrification elements of the Internet to protect minors from harmful material. Throughout the years, librarians have struggled with monitoring minors’ access to the accumulating number of controversial texts in the library. The Internet’s unique infrastructure affords librarians virtually no opportunity for the pre-shelf review available with books and videos. Congress enacted the Communications Decency Act (CDA) in 1996 in an attempt to protect minors from the underbelly of the internet. The United States Supreme Court, in Reno v. ACLU, struck down the CDA ruling that …

Déjà Vu All Over Again": The Securities And Exchange Commission Once More Attempts To Regulate The Accounting Profession Through Rule 102(E) Of Its Rules Of Practice, Norman S. Johnson, Ross A. Albert

Utah Law Review

Unfortunately, it seems that the Commission is bound and determined to repeat its past mistakes. For the good of accountants and the other professionals who practice before the Commission, as well as the Commission itself, investors, and issuers, these matters should receive definitive clarification sooner rather than later.

The Relationship Between Learning Style And Academic Achievement In A Classroom Utilizing The Learning Cycle Teaching Strategy, Linda Kay Graber Jan 1999

The Relationship Between Learning Style And Academic Achievement In A Classroom Utilizing The Learning Cycle Teaching Strategy, Linda Kay Graber

Graduate Research Papers

This study asked the question: Is the gain in student achievement, in a classroom using the learning cycle teaching strategy, together with Kolb's Learning Style Inventory, different among eighth grade science students in the four cognitive learning modes identified by Kolb?

The population for this study consisted of eighth grade students at Price Laboratory School on the Campus of the University of Northern Iowa, located in Cedar Falls, Iowa. The study was a one-group pretest-posttest design in which gain in achievement was compared to learning style. Two student groups participated in a four week unit on the structure and function …

Examining How Presentation Technology Affects Communication Of Student Ideas, Barbara Besch Jan 1999

Examining How Presentation Technology Affects Communication Of Student Ideas, Barbara Besch

Graduate Research Papers

This research examines the impact of presentation technology and the effect it has on the way students communicate their ideas. Students have traditionally stood at the front of the room and talked about their research and findings. Technology offers new means in presenting student research. The class that will be participating in this study will have access to presentation software and the tools to use it effectively to create dynamic presentations. Before the process begins, students will be asked to evaluate their attitudes and feelings on presenting the results of research. They will then evaluate the overall quality of their …

Differentiating Type Of Muscle Movement Via Ar Modeling And Neural Network Classification, Beki̇r Karlik Jan 1999

Differentiating Type Of Muscle Movement Via Ar Modeling And Neural Network Classification, Beki̇r Karlik

Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences

The aim of this study is to classify electromyogram (EMG) signals for controlling multifunction proshetic devices. An artificial neural network (ANN) implementation was used for this purpose. Autoregressive (AR) parameters of $a_1, a_2, a_3, a_4$ and their signal power obtained from different arm muscle motions were applied to the input of ANN, which is a multilayer perceptron. At the output layer, for 5000 iterations, six movements were distinguished at a high accuracy of 97.6%.
