Sunday In The Park With George, James Lapine, Stephen Sondheim

Inspired by George Seurat's painting Sunday Afternoon on the Island of Le Grand Jatte, this is a play that in the first act contrasts the artist's ability to organize and control his work and his inability to do either with his life. The second act is a second artist named George, Seurat's grandson, trying to come to terms with similar issues.

This play opened on October 22, 1999 and was reviewed in The Plain Dealer on October 28, 1999.

Child Welfare And Alaska Native Tribal Governance: A Pilot Project In Kake, Alaska — Report Of Findings, Lisa Rieger, Randy Kandel

Reports

This report details research on child welfare decision-making in Kake in the context of a proposed ordinance for the establishment of an organized tribal court in the village. The tribal court did not, in fact, come into being at that time, but the researchers were able to follow the development of a different local decision-making approach — circle sentencing. The research revealed that welfare issues and problems were handled through a variety of informal and formal methods that reflected Tlingit cultural emphases. Ideas arising from outside, such as circle sentencing, were selectively adapted.

The issue of whether there is consistency in prosocial dispositions was examined with a longitudinal data set extending from ages 4 to 5 years into early adulthood (N = 32). Spontaneous prosocial behaviors observed in the preschool classroom predicted actual prosocial behavior, other- and self-reported prosocial behavior, self-reported sympathy, and perspective taking in childhood to early adulthood. Prosocial behaviors that were not expected to refl ect an other-orientation (i.e., low cost helping and compliant prosocial behavior) generally did not predict later prosocial behavior or sympathy. Sympathy appeared to partially mediate the relation of early spontaneous sharing to later prosocial dispositions. …

The new perhalogenated porphyrin 2,3,7,8,12,13,17,18-octabromo-5,10,15,20-tetrakis(trifluoromethyl)porphinato -nickel(II) exhibits several striking features, including an extremely ruffled macrocycle with a very short Ni-N distance, an unusually red-shifted optical spectrum, and, surprisingly, hindered rotation of the meso-trifluoromethyl substituents (ΔG2+78 = 47 kJ mol-1).
