American higher education exists today in an environment of accountability. The public is demanding full participation in addressing the considerable social, health and economic problems facing society. Despite explicit statements of commitment to public service and community outreach however, according to numerous studies conducted over the past twenty years, universities are not articulating this commitment in faculty roles and rewards.

Results from the Russian Cosmos program suggest that the rhesus monkey is an excellent model for studying weightlessness-induced changes in muscle function. Consequently, the purpose of this investigation was to establish the resting levels of selected substrate and enzymes in individual slow- and fast-twitch muscle fibers of the rhesus monkey. A second objective was to determine the effect of an 18-day sit in the Spacelab experiment-support primate facility [Experimental System for the Orbiting Primate (ESOP)]. In an effort to reduce costs, the pursuit to down-gauge packaging materials is constant. In the case of this study, the primary package of a dairy product is being considered for reduction from the current 57 mil thickness to 52 mils. In the past, as the material was down-gauged from 62 mils, a loss in material strength and an increase in damage were observed. Fauna Of The Subfamily Ichneumoninae (Hymenoptera, Ichneumonidae) Of Azerbaijan With New Records, Azer Abulfaz Oghlu Aliyev

This paper presents information about 103 species of the subfamily ichneumoninae. 10 species of them were included in the Azerbaijan fauna, 25 in the Caucasian fauna and 65 in the Transcaucasian fauna for the first time. They belong to 6 tribes and 36 genera. Their distribution, hosts and biotopes were noted.

In this survey, the tortoise and turtle fauna of Resadiye (Datça) Peninsula, which has not previously been studied in detail, is given. Mauremys caspica rivulata and Testudo graeca ibera specimens were collected as museum material or released after their measurements were taken, from four and nine localities respectively, establishing the status of the peninsula's testudine fauna. A total of 30 adult and eight juvenile specimens were studied morphologically. Observations on the ecological and biological characteristics of the testudines are also given.

The species composition, size frequency distribution and length/weight relationships for each sex, size at first sexual maturity, and spawning seasons of the commercially important shrimp species inhabiting Yumurtalik Bight of the Nort-eastern Mediterranean were studied. Two penaeid shrimp species, Penaeus semisulcatus and Metapenaeus stebbingi, dominated the catches. Only a few individuals of Metapenaeus monoceros were captured during the study. The minimum size at first maturity was estimated to be 130 mm total length (TL) for P. semisulcatus and 55-60 mm TL for M. stebbingi. The Taxonomic Status Of Triturus Vulgaris(Linnaeus, 1758) Populations In Western Anatolia, Turkey, Kurtuluş Olgun, İbrahi̇m Baran, Cemal Varol Tok

A total of 179 (97 males, 82 females) Triturus vulgaris specimens collected during the breeding season from Western Anatolia (Efes, Ayvacık, Lapseki, Karacabey, Gemlik) and European Turkey (Bolayır) was examined. The morphological and the statistical evaluations showed that the Western Anatolian (except Efes) and the Thrace populations are similar. The West Anatolian populations, therefore, should be included in the nominate subspecies, T.v. vulgaris. The Efes specimens were found to be different from specimens of Ayvacik, Lapseki and Gemlik especially in terms of body measurements. The explanation of the taxonomic status of the Efes population will be possible with the material …

A total of 278 Capoeta capoeta capoeta were caught in the Çıldır Lake-Ardahan from May to December 1991. The age composition of C.c.capoeta specimens were between I-IX years and VI years old dominated with a rate of 31.54%. In the population, the percentages were calculated as 38.95% for males and 61.65% for females. According to age groups I-IX, to average fork lengths were 1622.00mm; 225.17mm; 263.88mm; 301.91mm; 322.11mm; 350.83mm; 381.30mm; 408. 14mm and 426.00 mm; average weights were 167.00g; 173.83g; 355.75g; 428.76g; 497.02g; 610.68g; 746.04g; 917.09g and 1090.00 g respectively. In this study, biological characteristics i.e. sex and age distribution, growth (in length and weight), growth rates, and condition factor of sprat (Sprattus sprattus phalericus) from the Eastern Blak Sea coast have been examined. The percentage of females and males was 57.53 % and 42.47 % out of 372 specimens which ranged between age group I and IV. Age groups II and III were also predominant in the catch composition. In this research, sex and age compositions, age-length, age-weight, length-weight relations, condition factors were investigated on 674 chub (Leuciscus cephalus L., 1758) specimens caught from Lake Tödürge, Sivas between April and November 1994. The age composition of L. cephalus specimens were between I-VII years and sex percentages were calculated as 68.25 % for females and 31.75 % for males. Determined minimum and maximum forklength values were 53 and 299 mm; weights were 1.5 and 347.1 g. In this study, the feeding biology is being examined on 80 Bufo viridis specimens (30 males, 50 females) which were all collected from 6 localities of the vicinity of İzmir. The changes in glycogen levels depending on starvation, feeding, aging and parasitisation in the mature female of Pimpla turionellae L. (Hymenoptera: Ichneumonidae), which is a biological control agent, have been observed. Glycogen level, which is a major energy source in insects, increased when the females of P.turionellae are fed with 30% honey, but it decreased depending on aging, starvation and parasitism. There was a positive relationship between the glycogen level of an insect and the number of its eggs laid within the host pupae.

Services such as in vitro fertilization (IVF) and intracytoplasmic spenn injection (ICSI) are not covered under most provincial health insurance plans. The case of Cameron and Smith v. Nova Scotia (A.G.), the Minister of Health, the Department of Health and the Administrator, Insured Professional Services is the latest attempt at finding a legal solution to at least some of the economic barriers infertile people face in seeking treatment. Herbs have been used as food and for medicinal purposes for centuries. Research interest has focused on various herbs that possess hypolipidemic, antiplatelet, antitumor, or immune-stimulating properties that may be useful adjuncts in helping reduce the risk of cardiovascular disease and cancer. In different herbs, a wide variety of active phytochemicals, including the flavonoids, terpenoids, lignans, sulfides, polyphenolics, carotenoids, coumarins, saponins, plant sterols, curcumins, and phthalides have been identified. Several of these phytochemicals either inhibit nitrosation or the formation of DNA adducts or stimulate the activity of protective enzymes such as the Phase II enzyme glutathione transferase (EC 2.5.1.18). There are two important things to remember about empathy - it is necessary, and it is impossible. Without some degree of empathy, which I define here as imagining the mutuality and difference reflected in someone else's standpoint, people could not live together. Even conservatives, who generally disdain government obligations to assist people living in poverty, tend to concede that private charity fueled by some form of empathy constitutes a moral imperative.
