The objective of this thesis project is to design and develop a Geographic Information System (GIS) operation for the primary purpose of managing apiary site information by the state honeybee inspector for West Virginia. Presently, information related to each apiary site is recorded through the use of registration forms, which are mailed and later stored in file cabinets. At this point the flow of information concerning the practice of beekeeping is stymied. Using these filed registration forms as a useful database of information is unwieldy, if not impossible. Some children exhibit disruptive and self-injurious behavior during mealtime, limiting the positive interaction between care giver and child, and decreasing the probability of a nutritionally adequate intake. Research has demonstrated the utility of functional analysis (i.e., identifying controlling variables of problem behavior) for the development of effective non-aversive interventions for a variety of behavior problems. This study applied the methodology of an analog experimental (functional) analysis of behavior to the specific interaction between care givers and children exhibiting mealtime behavior problems. The purpose of this study was to identify sustainability criteria and indicators for evaluating sustainable ecotourism development in Taman Negara National Park (TNNP), Malaysia. This was an attempt to develop sustainability measurements for the evaluation of ecotourism from the theoretical concept of sustainable development. Despite efforts to reduce the incidence of adolescent pregnancy and childbearing in the U.S., it remains a pressing social concern and public health problem. Indeed, births to women under 20 continue to constitute one of every seven births in this country and remain higher than teen birth rates in comparable industrialized nations. Several studies have shown that Rhipicephalus appendiculatus from geographically isolated areas differ in their susceptibilities to Theileria paIva, the haemoprotozoan causative agent of East Coast Fever. In Kenya, R. appendiculatus from Muguga have been reported to be less susceptible to T parva infection than those from Rusinga Islands. As the same tick species from different areas shows variation in vector competence, it was considered to be of epidemiological interest to determine whether these tick populations are genetically different. Various neem (Azadirachta indica. A. Juss) formulations were evaluated under laboratory and greenhouse conditions for their effects on two-spotted spider mites, Tetranychus urticae Koch (Prostigmata: Tetranychidae), on tomatoes, Lycopersicum esculentum. Four neem formulations (Neemros: neem seed powder with 0.5% azadirachtin, Neemroc: a water miscible emulsifiable concentrate oil, with 0.03% azadirachtin, Saroneem: an alcohol extract; extracted in isopropyl alcohol, containing 1% azadirachtin and Neemroc combi: an enriched oil extract with 0.5% azadirachtin) were tested against two-spotted spider mites. Evaluation Of The Impact Of Cotesia Flavipes Cameron (Hymenoptera :Braconidae) And Indeginous Parasitoids On Stemborer Populations In Southwestern Kenya., Kennedy Okoth Ogedah

Data obtained from regular field samples throughout the life cycle of Chilo partellus in three experimental sites; Ungoye, Mbita point and Kuja river, were used to construct life tables. Key factor analysis was conducted to determine the key mortality factors. Results showed little variation in the total inter-generation mortality expressed as 100rx at all the three developmental stages of C.partellus. The mean values obtained ranged from 89.35%-98.1 %,86.1 %-99.8% and 91.7%-96.03% for Kuja river, Mbita point and Ungoye respectively. The most common cause of mortality was classified as disappearance whereas parasitism contributed minimally to the C.partellus mortality at all the …

In 1956, Morocco inaugurated a constitutional democratic polity on the Western model. Elections were to be held, and political parties formed, with voters to be registered by party. The Berbers, however, did not join the parties as individual voters. Each Berber clan joined their chosen party as a unit. To consecrate (or, perhaps, to accomplish) the clan's choice, a bullock was sacrificed. These sacrificial rites offer a useful parable about the relationship between law and culture. "Learning Hardware" approach involves creating a computational network based on feedback from the environment (for instance, positive and negative examples from the trainer), and realizing this network in an array of Field Programmable Gate Arrays (FPGAs). Computational networks can be built based on incremental supervised learning (Neural Net training) or global construction (Decision Tree design). Here we advocate the approach to Learning Hardware based on Constructive Induction methods of Machine Learning (ML) using multivalued functions. This is contrasted with the Evolvable Hardware (EHW) approach in which learning/evolution is based on the genetic algorithm only. Various approaches to supervised inductive learning …

Elaeagnus Angustifolial. As A Biomonitor Of Heavy Metal Pollution, Ahmet Aksoy, Uğur Şahi̇n

Turkish Journal of Botany

The leaves of Elaeagnus angustifolia L. (Elaeagnaceae) were tested as a possible biomonitor of heavy metal pollution in Kayseri. Concentration of Pb, Cd and Zn were determined in unwashed and washed leaves and soils. Differences between the unwashed and washed samples varied according to the metal pollutant levels. Significant correlations were obtained between the heavy metal concentrations in surface soil and washed leaf samples. E. angustifoliawas found to be a useful biomonitor of the heavy metals investigated.

Anther culture of four different barley cultivars ( Hordeum vulgareL. cvs. Anadolu, Cumhuriyet-50, Obruk-86 and Tokak-157/37) currently cultivated in Turkey has been investigated. Two different culture media (BAC3 and FHG) were used and the effect of a 21-day cold pretreatment was studied. Apostome ciliates are symbiotic organisms whose life cycles are complex and involve specific feeding, divisional, migratory, and phoretic stages. In this study we examined apostome trophonts (the diagnostic stage) from a variety of crustacean hosts in the Mobile Bay and Dauphin Island, Alabama, area. The hosts were grass shrimp (Palaemonetes pugio and P. paludosus), striped hermit crab (Clibanarius vittatus), blue crab (Callinectes sapidus), and pink shrimp (Farfantepenaeus (=Penaeus) duorarum). The main objective of this dissertation is to describe and examine how altering fire regimes in southeastern longleaf pine savannas may affect the abundances and distributions of indigenous plant species. In chapter one, I investigate whether herbs, compared to shrubs, have greater utility in delineating communities along elevation gradients of several meters in longleaf pine savannas. Herbaceous and shrub abundance data were analyzed separately for areas in Louisiana and Florida using cluster analysis and ordination. In Louisiana, three plant communities were sharply delineated and strongly correlated with gradients in elevation, surface soil moisture, and other surface soil properties. Herbaceous species …

Many Gulf Coast Chenier Plain marshes are managed through a combination of winter burning and structural marsh management (SMM) to improve habitats for waterfowl and furbearers and reduce wetland loss. These practices are controversial because of concerns regarding ability to achieve goals coupled with potential negative effects on other marsh processes or organisms. I investigated the effects of winter burning and SMM on bird and plant communities of Chenier Plain marshes in southwest Louisiana. Chirality is a characteristic of many synthetic and biological organic compounds. This property is particularly true in the pharmaceutical industry where a large number of drugs are marketed as racemates. One method used to monitor optical purity is capillary electrophoresis (CE). Chiral separation using CE is achieved by use of an immobilized chiral phase or through a chiral selector mobile phase additive. It is demonstrated and determined that chiral polymeric surfactants are more suitable for chiral separation in electrokinetic capillary chromatography (EKC) than conventional micelles. The study also assessed nursing faculty's perceptions of the importance of these selected women's health issues to nursing curricula. Two hundred sixty baccalaureate nursing programs were randomly selected from a population of 604 1998 National League for Nursing accredited baccalaureate nursing programs in the United States. The Gulf of Mexico offers an appropriate setting for studying the chemical dynamics at the continent-ocean interface. In addition, its sediments preserve the climatic records of the past. This study employs Ba as a tracer to examine several aspects of modern Gulf oceanographic processes and seeks to unravel Gulf paleoceanography using Ba/Ca ratios from fossil foraminiferal shells. Comparison of dissolved Ba in the Mississippi and Atchafalaya River mixing zones suggests different Ba distributions can occur as a result of hydrodynamic and morphologic variability. Changes in the associations among mineral and organic materials in estuaries may control the nature and quantity of organic material (OM) preserved in sediment deposits or cycled in the water column. Estuarine sediment-OM attachments were examined using descriptive analyses and experiments to assess their response to salinity changes and the bioavailability of sedimentary OM. Desorption experiments compared the amount of organic carbon extracted from sediment in rinses of different salinity. Uptake experiments monitored changes in carbon and bacteria concentrations to compare the bioavailability of dissolved and sedimentary OM.
