Modeling Of Short-Distance Running, Maria Camille Theresa Jose Capiral

In this thesis, we construct a model of human performance in short distance foot races. First, we describe the Hill-Keller model of competitive running, based on the solution to an optimal control problem, and then focus on that part of the model dealing with short distance races. Our task is to estimate two underlying physiological parameters that characterize the runner's performance. Second, we customize this submodel by linearizing Keller's analytical solution for short distance races, we then apply a high quality linear least squares estimation based on the Singular Value Decomposition (SVD) in order to estimate the two physiological parameters. …

Bioinformatics is the use of computational methods to perform hypothesis-driven research that generates new knowledge from existing biological databases. For any bioinformatic analysis, it is important that the most accurate method(s) be used. The first portion of this thesis is a comparative evaluation of six programs designed for the local alignment of protein sequences. The results demonstrate that two of the programs, MEME and PROBE, outperform all other programs (BLOCKMAKER, ITERALIGN, MATCHBOX, and PIMA). Recent literature on quality of life indicators and sustainability has focused on quantifiable measurements, not qualitative. In actuality, the whole concept of quality of life is a subjective valuation of a myriad of issues by individuals. The purpose of this thesis, based on the testing of a model, is to identify these subjective quality of life variables and determine which variables are currently significant to residents in Southern Nevada. This study addressed the need of training and education, at a Master's degree level, for corporate and research chefs. Actual competencies, the importance of those competencies and the education needed for proficiency in those competencies was a secondary objective of the study. Foodservice professionals who are current members of the American Culinary Federation and the Research Chefs Association were selected as respondents. A total of 150 respondents returned completed survey forms used for data analysis in this study. The gene double-time (dbt) is a molecular component of the circadian clock. It encodes a protein kinase that is likely to be involved in the phosphorylation and degradation of period protein (PER). Immunoblot analysis with an antibody produced for this thesis showed that double-time protein (DBT) levels do not undergo a detectable circadian oscillation, and that the levels of DBT are comparable in a short-period mutation (dbtS ) and wild-type flies. Immunocytochemical detection of PER in head sections of dbtS and wild-type flies demonstrated that PER enters photoreceptor nuclei later and disappears sooner in dbtS than in wild type flies. …

This experiment was conducted to determine the effect of incubation of Artemia nauplii with steroids prior to the first feeding instar II stage of Artemia development. Decapsulated Artemia cysts were incubated at a concentration of 3 g cysts/L in hatching media (1 L seawater at 1.030 SG, 0.08 g highly unsaturated fatty acid supplement) and either 20 mg 17β-estradiol (E2) or 17 αmethyldihydrotestosterone (MDHT) dissolved in 3 mL 70% ethyl alcohol or ethyl alcohol alone (control). Cysts were cultivated at 18-20° C for 24h. Nauplii were collected by filtering culture media, and were rinsed in 1 L fresh water. Artemia …

This study examined the reactions of mental health professionals to acquired immune deficiency syndrome (AIDS)-related bereavement. Ninety-six mental health professionals from across the United States (e.g., counselors, social workers, and psychologists) completed questionnaires concerning the loss of a client to AIDS. Measures included the Texas Revised Inventory of Grief, Impact of Event Scale-Revised, Brief Symptom Inventory, and Satisfaction with Life Scale. There were no significant relations between client deaths (number and recency) and indices of grief, trauma, psychological distress, or satisfaction with life. Symptoms of distress did not increase with number of deaths or in relation to recency of a …

This experiment examined the impact of an enhanced graphic postorganizer on the amount of learning and retention college students realized from mathematics lectures given during a full semester. The study was a quasi-experiment in which intact classes of intermediate algebra students with similar mathematical backgrounds either completed the written postorganizer developed for the experiment after each lecture or took a quiz over the same lecture. The postorganizer emphasized concepts, definitions, relationships and student-developed explanations rather than procedures. This research document examines twenty-six of the forty-nine songs composed by Gerald Finzi (1901–1956) to texts by Thomas Hardy (1840–1928). The songs were written for baritone and are found in the sets; Earth and Air and Rain, Before and After Summer, and I Said to Love. The study views the songs within the context of Finzi's life and compositional style as well as in relation to his affinity with the poetry and outlook of Thomas Hardy. This investigation examines the perceptions that students have of teachers' argumentativeness and verbal aggressiveness to determine if these trait behaviors in conjunction with a student's perceptions of their teacher's socio-communicative style (being their level of assertiveness and responsiveness) have an effect on the student-teacher relationship. In addition, this investigation attempts to create a model of teachers communicative behaviors which lead to students' feelings of learner empowerment and student learning. Racial identity and locus of control are two constructs likely to have a significant impact on career self-efficacy (beliefs about one's ability to successfully perform in a given career). This study examines the influence of racial identity attitudes (as measured by the Racial Identity Attitude Scale-B) and locus of control (as measured by the Internal, Powerful Others, and Chance scales) on the career choice patterns and aspirations of African American adolescents (N = 101). Retroviral vectors containing direct repeats of homologous sequences constitute a powerful in vivo model system to analyze reverse transcriptase (RT) template-switching events. Directly repeated sequences in retroviral genomes are unstable and frequently deleted from the final integrated provirus due to RT's low template affinity and processivity. We developed murine leukemia virus (MLV)-based self-inactivating and self-activating vectors containing 701-bp direct repeats composed of segments of the herpes simplex virus-1 thymidine kinase gene (HTK). The leading cause of death among cystic fibrosis (CF) patients is progressive lung disease characterized by an early, sustained inflammation, chronic infection by mucoid strains of P. aeruginosa, and subsequent bronchiectasis. The connection between defective CFTR and the apparent pathophysiology of the CF lung remains unclear. Decalcification around brackets is a problem associated with plaque accumulation trapping caries producing bacteria, such as Streptococcus mutans (SM) and Lactobacilli acidophilus. The aim of this study was to measure 1)the concentration of fluoride released from three sealants: Protection TM Plus, Maximum Cure®, TransbondTM XT, and a glass ionomer, GC Fuji II 2) fluoride release of materials recharged with topical fluoride, 3) the ability of materials to inhibit SM, and 4) the degradation of materials by SM. This research examines the role of gender in African women’s economic co-operatives in the Northwest Province of South Africa. The theoretical frameworks of feminist geography and gender and development reveal the interconnections between issues of women, work, and rural economic development. Land-use history in Zimbabwe has caused dramatic differences in erosion severity between Commercial and Communal Lands. High population numbers have been found to be positively correlated with the extent of eroded area in Communal Lands. Dambo wetlands are particularly vulnerable to this population pressure as they are isolated wet areas supporting plant growth during the six to eight months of the dry season. In Zimbabwe, they cover 1.3 million hectares of the country. It is a “soft” ionization source, which permits the preservation of noncovalent interactions prevailing in biological systems. A need to study the nonverbal aspect of aggression is argued because the inclusion of nonverbal aspects within the original conception of verbal aggression suggests that the role of nonverbal cues in the expression of aggression might be stronger than originally thought. To test the potential relationship of nonverbal aggression with other personality variables, a 30-item scale of nonverbal aggression was developed. A study of 179 college students is reported which sought to investigate the possibility that nonverbal aggression is related to verbal aggression, nonverbal immediacy, assertiveness, and responsiveness. The study examined the relationship between father and son when the father employed verbally aggressive strategies. Further, this study examined the level of affect that the son would have toward their father when such strategies were employed. Finally, this study was designed to examine the compliance level of sons toward their father when verbal aggression was present in their relationship. This study included 162 participants from a large Mid-Atlantic University. The results showed that fathers will gain less compliance from their college-aged sons using verbally aggressive messages. Muscle growth is regulated by the balance between the two opposing processes of protein synthesis and protein degradation. The calpain system consisting of two ubiquitous proteolytic enzymes m-calpain, µ-calpain and calpastatin (their endogenous inhibitor) is considered to be the major proteolytic system that catalyzes the initiation of myofibrillar protein degradation in muscle. Gene expression studies of the calpain system were carried out in male and female broiler skeletal muscle from breast (pectoralis), leg (semitendinosus) and wing (brachi) in chickens one week through six weeks of age. The double-time ( dbt) gene in Drosophila encodes a protein (DBT) related to casein kinase I.This thesis examines whether DBT associates with other proteins besides PER, and whether the association of DBT might change as a function of time of day and genotype in vivo. DBT binds in vitro to several parts of PER and TIM, and to the N terminal of DBT. At all times of day in vivo, a significant fraction of DBT sediments with a molecular weight greater than that of its monomer. Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) is used in logging to provide the log analyst an additional tool in establishing reservoir characteristics. Magnetic Resonance Imaging Logging (MRIL) provides information on the Free Fluid, Irreducible Fluid, Total Porosity, Effective Porosity, and Permeability that is far more accurate than Conventional Wireline Log interpretation, enabling better completion practices that will further enhance total recovery. What this feasibility study seeks to show is that by using Neural Networks, it is possible to generate synthetic MRI Logs using conventional Wireline Log data.
