Growth And Feeding Studies On The Algal Feeding Stage Of A Pfiesteria-Like Dinoflagellate, David W. Seaborn, A. Michelle Seaborn, William M. Dunstan, Harold G. Marshall

The dinoflagellate Cryptoperidiniopsis sp. was isolated from sediment samples taken from Virginia estuaries, and established in culture for subsequent growth and feeding studies. The maximum abundance, or yield, of Cryptoperidiniopsis is exponentially related to the concentration of algal prey and is saturated at about 4.00 X 10⁵ mL^-1. Salinity from 10-20 ppt and temperature between 15-25 C have no effect on the yield of this form of Cryptoperidiniopsis. Light intensity has a secondary effect in that the algal prey reproduces more quickly in higher light as they are being grazed. Growth rates of Cryptoperidiniopsis were …

This explanatory study examined the reasons why physicians have difficulty respecting the wishes of terminally ill patients who refuse treatment. Consistent with the relevant literature, three alternative explanations were hypothesized in answering the question: fear of litigation, religious beliefs, and medical professional values.

Evidence was gathered from three different sources. Semistructured interviews were carried out with 24 emergency physicians from the Moncton Area in the Canadian province of New Brunswick and submitted to both quantitative and qualitative content analysis. Using eight barley cultivars field experiments were carried out in Eskişehir, from 1991 through 1994. Water consumption and dry mater yield of genotypes were studied. Also, the yields and yield components as well as their relationship with dry matter production in different growing periods were studied. There was no significant difference among evapotranspiration of genotypes. The Water Use Efficiency (WUE) varied with year. Mean annual WUE of genotypes varied from 3.6 to 4.75 kg / da^-1 mm^-1 for biological yield, and from 1.08 to 1.45 kg / da^-1 mm^-1 for grain yield. This study was conducted to determine the annual variations in crude protein, crude cellulose, P, K, Ca and Mg contents, and the ratio of K/(Ca+Mg) of crested wheatgrass, subalpine brome, sheep fescue, junegrass, needlegrass, hybrid alfalfa and cat thyme in Erzurum rangelands, during the 1994 growing season. Crude protein, P, Mg and K contents steadily decreased toward to end of the growth stage although cellulose content increased. Ca content increased until blooming stage in all plants. An experiment was conducted at Hatay in experimental station and farmers field during 1995-96 and 1996-97 season to work out the response of pea cv. Marmara to Rhizobium inoculation and chemical fertilization. Rhizobium inoculation increased the number of nodules and nodules dry weight in both year and location significantly. Nodulation status were superior in farmers field which has persistent history of legume cultivation. Nitrogen application and inoculation significantly increased total above ground dry matter except farmers field in 1996-97, and seed yields over uninoculated and without nitrogen given plots in both location. In this study, isolates of Alternaria alternata f.sp. citri, cause of citrus brown spot, were obtained from Minneola tangelo orchards in Çukurova Region where disease appeared and after pathogenicity tests their resistance to iprodione was investigated. Five of 35 isolates recovered from different orchards were observed as iprodione-resistant . The ED_50 values of these resistant isolates ranged from 61.89 to 109.21 \mug/ml, but the average ED_50 value of iprodione-sensitive isolate was less than 1 \mug/ml. When the orchards where from iprodione-resistant isolates collected were checked in terms of fungicide application program in recent years, it was noticed that iprodione application …

In Vitro Propogation Of Some Species From Orchidaceae Family Existing In The Natural Flora Of Aegean Region, Kubi̇lay Önal

A total of 21 species belonging to Orchis, Ophrys, Dactylorchiza, Serapias, Aceras, Anacamptis genera, Orchidaceae family, was collected from Aegean Region. Orchis laxiflora, Orchis sancta ve Serapias vomeracea were successfully cultured by means of embryo culture, but the other species did not grow. Tuber production rates of Orchis laxiflora and Orchis sancta were found to be higher in dark conditions at +5°C than normal conditions. For the same species successfully cultured, the optimum transfer time to the soil was august, while the percentage of developing plants was low in spring months.

This study was conducted to determine effects of various planting patterns on grain yield and agronomic characters of corn and legume (bean and cowpea) grown under intercropping at Tokat - Kazova ecological conditions in 1992 and 1993. Intercropping has significantly influenced plant height, ear height, 1000 grain weight and days to maturity of corn. The highest grain yields were obtained from 1 corn + 1 cowpea and 1 corn + 1 bean alternate rows.
