Apartheid As A Crime Against Humanity: A Submission To The South African Truth And Reconciliation Commission, Ronald C. Slye

The question of whether apartheid is a crime against humanity might seem an odd one for many people living outside South Africa-and indeed for the vast majority of people living inside South Africa. With the recent demise of legalized apartheid in South Africa, one might ask if apartheid's status under international law has any contemporary relevance beyond a small group of legal academics. The status of apartheid under international law-in particular whether apartheid constitutes a crime against humanity-is a question that the South African Truth and Reconciliation Commission ("TRC") was obligated to address in its final report.

The process by which children develop internal models of the self and others has been an area of much theoretical interest. This study explored the influence of parental affective and verbal socialization messages as well as children's own mastery experiences on the child's emerging internal models of self and significant others. The goals of the study were to replicate the association between parental control style and child compliance as reported in the child development literature and to examine the relationship between child compliance and child self-concept. While under investigation as a toxicity-testing organism, female gametophytes of the small marine red alga, Champia parvula (C. Agardh) Harvey exhibited a loss of diaphragm formation in indeterminately growing branch tips. Further study revealed that this change of morphology occurred when bromide was omitted from nutrient enriched, synthetic seawater (Thursby and Harlin 1984).

The goals of this project were to verify and further document the loss of .diaphragm formation in C. parvula under bromide minus and other culture conditions and to observe developmental events associated with the loss of diaphragm formation. Cell oxidative damage caused by free radical production during respiration plays a major role in tissue dysfunction. Mitochondria are subcellular sites for oxidative phosphorylation and are the major source of free radicals. Their high oxidative activity makes them susceptible to oxidative damage. Antioxidants protect the cell against oxidative damage, but when defenses are not adequate cells are subjected to oxidative stress. A lack of vitamin E, and selenium results in enlargement ofliver mitochondria, suggesting mitochondrial fusion, and an inability to divide. Recent studies suggest that aging is associated with mitochondrial enlargement and elongation, and that these mitochondria are less oxidatively …

This research project describes and explains the 1996 and 1997 Maine forestry practices referenda, which came about amid heightened concern about threats to Maine's large tracts of privately owned forestlands, part of a larger area known as the Northern Forest. It explores the factors influencing how people cast their votes in the two referenda and the ties between these factors and the spatial patterns of the votes.

This research shows that in addition to concern for the environment, economic considerations of individuals were an important factor with regard to how people cast their votes. Attempts to influence voter opinion by …

Canada Warblers (Wilsonia canadensis) and Norther Waterthrushes (Seiurus noveboracensis) – both fores-interior, neotropical migrants – are the only breeding bird species in Rhode Island restricted to forested wetlands. Despite continuing alterations of wetlands and surrounding upland landscapes, primarily as a result of urbanization, the factors affecting the distribution of these two species have not previously been investigated. The need for such research is urgent, especially given the long-term decline in Canada Warbler populations in the Northeast. Because of increased environmental awareness by city planning commissions, there are more urban parks and greenbelt areas. These areas often result in increased human and wildlife contacts, thus resulting in the need for management plans regarding urban wildlife. From September 1998 to March 1999, we conducted mammal surveys of the urban greenspace Murray Park, Little Rock, Pulaski County, Arkansas. Surveys were conducted using five methods: direct observations; spot lighting; live trapping; animal sign; and scent posts. Community structure may be governed by many abiotic and biotic factors. Of the biotic factors, predation is often considered to be critical in structuring freshwater stream communities. In the Warm Fork of the Spring River, the crayfish Cambarus hubbsi is found mainly in riffles, whereas the crayfish Orconectes marchandi is found in high numbers in pools. We hypothesized that predation, mainly by fish, is a factor causing this segregation. Higher predation rates for C. hubbsi than 0. marchandi in the pools and higher predation rates for 0. marchandi than C. hubbsi in the riffles were expected. A transplant tethering experiment …

Phytoestrogens are biochemicals synthesized in plants which mimic steroidal estrogen activity in mammals. Analysis of these compounds in the legumes which produce them and in body fluids is important to the study of their physiological effects. High pressure liquid chromatography (HPLC) has been found to be an efficient and sensitive method of identification and quantitation of isoflavonoids, one class of phytoestrogen. Here we report the separation of three isoflavonoids, biochanin A, genistein and daidzein using an HPLC system with a Cg reverse phase column and a linear gradient mobile phase containing acetonitrile and acetic acid/water (10/90, v/v) over 60 minutes. …

The National Environmental Policy Act of 1969 requires federally funded projects to be evaluated for environmental impact to determine if a complete environmental impact statement must be prepared. Such an environmental assessment must also be included in any feasibility study for harbor enlargement and bank stabilization measures under the Water Resources Development Act. Population increases, coupled with economic growth from increased agricultural and industrial productivity, have resulted in increased Mississippi River barge transportation needs for Arkansas and Missouri. To more fully understand Ferguson Lake as an ecosystem and eventually relate its water quality and production potential to fisheries management, several limnological variables were sampled monthly from April 1997 through March 1999. Vertical profiles of temperature and dissolved oxygen were recorded, and water samples from 0.5 m. depth were tested for turbidity, pH, total alkalinity, total hardness, ortho-phosphate, nitrate-nitrogen, sulfate, iron and specific conductance. Evaporation rate experiments, spillway discharge and rainfall records were used to estimate lake hydrology. Nineteen dead wild turkeys were necropsied and 573 live wild turkeys were physically examined for pathological agents in Arkansas between 1992 and 1997 to determine the proximate role disease may play in declining wild populations in Arkansas. Necropsy of the dead wild turkeys identified avian pox and histomoniasis as the most common diseases (16% and 11% of necropsies, respectively). Avian pox was recorded from three major physiographic regions in the state (Ozark Highlands, Ouachita Mountains, Gulf Coastal Plain). One hen died of non-accidental crop impaction, the fifth occurrence observed in the southeastern United States. Another hen died after developing severe, …

Post-metamorphic growth and the reproductive cycle of the eastern narrowmouth toad (Gastrophryne carolinensis) were studied from 204 individuals collected during the April August 1989 activity season in a two-county area of northeastern Arkansas near the northwestern edge of the species' geographic range. Late summer metamorphs require a full growing season before they can reproduce as they approach their second year of life. The oldest individuals may be at least five years old. By late April, gonadal cycles of adults had commenced; the males were producing sperm, and some of the females were gravid. Fertility of both sexes increased during the …

Synthesis Of Two Novel Boronic Acid Probes For The Molecular Recognition Of Saccharides, Christopher W. Tudbman

Normally the detection of biologically important molecules such as saccharides is difficult. Few chemical sensing mechanisms have been developed for saccharides as they are uncharged, neither fluoresce nor quench fluorescence, and are normally present in aqueous media, which presents competitive hydrogen bonding. The recognition and measurement of saccharides has been achieved recently by certain synthetic molecular receptors or "probes," containing a boronic acid receptor moiety, which circumnavigates the normal difficulties associated with the detection of saccharides. We describe the emission spectral properties of two rhenium metal-ligand complexes with one and two-photon excitation, Re(bpy)₂(CO)₃Cl and [Re(bpy)(CO)₃CH₃CN]⁺, where bpy is 2,2’-bipyridyl and CH₃CN is acetonitrile. Similar emission spectra and intensity decay times characteristic of the metal-to-ligand charge transfer state were observed for one- and two-photon excitation. The lifetime and quantum yield of the acetonitrile complex are approximately 14-fold higher than that of the chloride complex. Both complexes display high anisotropies near 0.33 in frozen solution with one-photon excitation. Two-photon excitation results in anisotropies about 40% larger, …
