Recent research has indicated that personality characteristics and stress may influence the incidence of illness (Dreher, 1995). The majority of studies have examined personality characteristics and stress in acutely and chronically ill populations. However, this phenomenon has not been extensively studied in healthy populations. The purpose of this study was to examine the relationships among personality characteristics, subjective stress, and physical illness in a sample of undergraduate students. This study tested a moderator model in which personality characteristics interact with stress to influence the incidence of physical illness using hierarchical multiple regression. The Human Genome Project (HGP) has led to the deposit of human genomic sequence in the form of sequenced clones into various databases such as the DNA Data Bank of Japan (DDBJ) (Tateno and Gojobori, 1997), the European Molecular Biology Laboratory (EMBL) Nucleotide Sequence Database (Stoesser, et. al., 1999), and GenBank (Benson, et. al., 1998). Many of these sequenced clones occur in regions where sequencing has taken place either within the same sequencing center or other centers throughout the world. Ecology And Fishery Biology Of Holothuria Fuscogilva In The Maldives, Indian Ocean (Echinodermata: Holothuroidea), Norman Reichenbach

The ecology of Holothuriafuscogilva was assessed in three habitats in the Republic of Maldives: marine grass beds, island gaps and lagoon floor. In the lagoon floor habitat, H fuscogilva was the dominant sea cucumber with relative abundances ranging from 70 to 94.9% in the two atolls studied. In one island gap area the median density (biomass), movement and growth rate were 29 ha-I (21 kg ha-I), 2 m d-I and 0.29% d-1 , respectively. Based upon the weight distributions in the three habitats, H fuscogilva appears to recruit to shallow marine grass beds, then migrates to deeper waters such as …

Egypt holds a unique place among developing countries due to its longstanding commitment to gather information on the numbers and well-being of its population. But until now, there has never been a systematic effort to gather data on the group of young Egyptians poised between childhood and adulthood—its adolescents. Today, Egypt has the largest cohort of adolescents in its history, more than 13 million boys and girls between the ages of 10 and 19 according to its 1996 census. Their experiences during the transition to adulthood will profoundly affect how the nation makes its transition into the next century. This …

In California, little is known about the sensitivity of native bunchgrasses to competition or to changes in resource availability. We investigated the effect of nonnative annual vegetation on resource availability and growth of a native bunchgrass, Nassella pulchra, in a pair of factorial field experiments that incorporated effects of both interspecific and intraspecific competition as well as variation in soil depth. Plots of differing target densities and neighborhoods were used to assess changes in aboveground (light) and belowground (water) resource availability over multiple seasons in two sites with differing soil depth. Population relativities play little part in the international system. A nation’s economic and military power is influenced by population size, but as one factor among many. Formal relations among states exclude population from consideration by the principle of sovereign equality. Three sources of possible change in this situation are explored, in which states would be “population-weighted” to a greater degree than before. Convergence of productivity levels around the world, expected by many, would bring the economic and population rankings of states more into line. Such convergence is occurring, but selectively and for the most part quite slowly. Anticipation of its …

If, as Harold Bloom suggests. One Hundred Years of Solitude (1967) is a "supreme fiction," it achieves that status as it reformulates early modern narratives of self-discovery and dominion. Garcia Márquez signals his intention of rewriting the great Renaissance narratives of discovery when he begins his 1982 Nobel Prize acceptance speech with an account of Antonio Pigafetta's Viaggio attorno al mondo (1522). As a navigator aboard Magellan's 1519–21 voyage around the world, Pigafetta kept a log that Garcia Márquez categorizes as an ancestor "of our contemporary novels." Disease definitions and clinical judgments routinely affect coverage and reimbursement decisions by health insurers, the licensing determinations of regulatory agencies charged with reviewing new therapeutic technologies, evidentiary and substantive rulings by the judiciary in personal injury lawsuits and criminal trials, eligibility decisions in disability programs, and the resolution of claims before workers' compensation tribunals. This reliance on the definition and identification of disease by the medical profession fails to appreciate the extent to which our conceptions of illness are socially constructed rather than based on value-neutral scientific data and the application of technical expertise.

Nebraska Cooperative Fish and Wildlife Research Unit: Staff Publications

Scale-specific patterns of resource distribution on landscapes entrain attributes of resident animal communities such that species body-mass distributions are organized into distinct aggregations. Species within each aggregation respond to resources over the same range of scale. This discontinuous pattern has predictive power: invasive species and extinct or declining species in landscapes subject to human transformation tend to be located at the edge of body-mass aggregations (P < 0.01), which may be transition zones between distinct ranges of scale. Location at scale breaks affords species great opportunity, but also potential crisis.

Nebraska Game and Parks Commission: White Papers, Conference Presentations, and Manuscripts

An inventory of potential high quality mixed-grass prairie ranches and large properties within the Central Mixed-Grass Prairie Ecoregion of Kansas and Nebraska was conducted in the spring and summer of 1999. Emphasis during the inventory was placed on identification of relatively intact landscapes. Significant ranches within those untilled landscapes were visited. An interview of the owners or managers of those properties was coupled with a survey of the vegetation. Assessments of quality were based on species composition, continuity of ground cover, observations of livestock impact, and viability of the community types present.

The subfamily Borophaginae (Canidae, Carnivora, Mammalia) was erected by G. G. Simpson in 1945 to include seven genera of large, bonecrushing ‘‘dogs’’ in the late Tertiary of the northern continents. As a monophyletic group of canids, the Borophaginae is now known to be much more diverse than was originally envisioned but is confined within the middle to late Tertiary of North America. Fossil records of the borophagines are well represented and members of this prolific clade are often the most common predators in the late Tertiary deposits.
