In the United States, legislative responses to cloning among both federal and state lawmakers have been rapid and widespread. The Report of the NBAC to President Clinton proposed that Congress prohibit human cloning for a period of years. In the following year, Congress entertained a variety of bills proposing to ban or regulate human cloning. Some proposed prohibiting human cloning. Others proposed allowing such cloning for research purposes. Similarly, soon after Dolly's birth, state legislators presented a large number of bills aimed at regulating or prohibiting human cloning." Polycylic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), such as petroleum and petroleum derivatives, are widespread organic pollutants entering the environment, chiefly, through oil spills and incomplete combustion of fossil fuels. Since most PAHs are persist in the environment for a long period of time and bioaccumulate, they cause environmental pollution and effect biological equilibrium dramatically. Biodegradation of some PAHs by microorganisms has been biochemically and genetically investigated. Gene locations for some of these pathways are frequently found in exrachromosomal elements. Variations in the fatty acids compositions of muscle tissue, due to starving and feeding Cyprinion macrostomus (Heckel, 1843) at 35 and 24°C which naturally lives at 35±0.5°C in the Kan-gal Thermal Spring (Sivas) were investigated. No qualitative variation took place in the fatty acid composition of the fish which were fed and star-ved at 35°C. As far as the fish which were fed and starved at 24°C were concerned, it has determi-ned that docosapentaenoic acid (C22:5) and docosahexaenoic acid (C22:6), which are not found in fo-od could be synthesized and linoleic acid (C18:2) percentage was drastically decreased. Turkish Journal of Agriculture and Forestry

The contribution of different nitrogen sources (nitrate 15 N-NO 3 and symbiotic N-N 2 ) to the nitrogen status of soybean in ontogenesis was studied. Nitrate was assimilated effectively during the vegetative growth, whereas later on the nitrogen-fixation by root nodules became the basic source of nitrogen. The applying of a low dose of nitrate (22.2 mg N/plant) increased the total nitrogen content in the plant and did not depress the nitrogen fixation. Distribution of the symbiotic and nitrate nitrogen among organs of soybean was proportional.

The variation between wild barley lines ( Hordeum murinum, Hordeum bulbosumand Hordeum vulgare spontaneum) orig-inated from Turkey were investigated comparatively at the molecular level with the Random Amplified Polymorphic DNA (RAPD) technique. Leaf DNAs extracted from different barley lines were amplified with randomly chosen primers in a Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR). Rates of polymorphisms between the 23 lines were determined in pairwise comparisons. The lowest value of poly-morphism was determined to be 0.3% between wild barley lines numbered 50327 and 50354, and between 48101 and 50365 while the highest polymorphism value was determined to be 60% between wild barley lines …

The extracts prepared from the samples which were collected weekly intervals betweeen August and December in 1990 and 1992 were analyzed by thin layer chromatography and the changes in phenolic substances during flower bud developmental stages in strawberries were examined. Some differences were determined in terms of phenolic compositions among the developmental stages in the one dimensional chromatograms of young and mature leaves of Pocahontas, Tioga and Yalova-110 strawberry cultivars and these differences were observed during the same periods in all the three years. One of the most controversial birth-related torts is the wrongful life action in which a plaintiff sues for damages, claiming that he would have been better off never having lived at all and, but for defendant's negligence, would not in fact have lived. Most jurisdictions refuse to recognize this cause of action. However, the justifications for those refusals are often unpersuasive, since the acceptance of those rationales would imply that other existing practices must be changed. Many of the decisions that must be made by child protective service (CPS) agencies involve assessing the extent to which maltreating caregivers have made or are ready to make changes in their parenting behaviors. Yet, little is known about the process of change for these caregivers and no method is available to systematically measure their success in making the changes that CPS agencies require of them. The current study applies the Transtheoretical Model of Change to the problem of child abuse and neglect. Observed Conflict, Sexual Experience, Pornography, And Coercive Behavior As Predictors Of Men’S Sexual Arousal To Sexual And Violent Images, James Allen Miller

This study investigated predictors of sexual arousal to erotic, rape, and non-sexual violent videotaped stimuli in a sample of 82 undergraduate men. Questionnaire self-report measures of observed parental conflict, conflict tactics practiced in interpersonal relations, coercive sexual behavior, variety of sexual experiences, and frequency of using various forms of pornography, as well as a number of relevant demographic measures like fraternity affiliation, athletic participation, frequency of intercourse, and number of sexual partners, were assessed. These measures were used in analyses that tested relationships among these variables and determined group differences based on dichotomized classification of high and low scores.

This study examined the effects of a media literacy intervention on the gender attitudes, beliefs, and behaviors of a sample of 9^th and 11^th grade adolescents. As a time of identity development, adolescence can be especially challenging for girls, as they are faced with traditional cultural expectations about gender. It is proposed that the media, particularly television, reinforce traditional ideas about gender for both sexes, including traditional interactions with other gender peers, and may contribute to low social self-esteem in girls, with negative outcomes. Experiments in ship camouflage during World War I were necessitated by the inordinate success of German submarines (called "U-boats") in destroying Allied ships. Because it is impossible to make a ship invisible at sea, Norman Wilkinson, Everett L. Warner and other artists devised methods of course distortion in which high-contrast, unrelated shapes were painted on a ship's surface, thereby confusing the periscope view of the submarine gunner.

In this study, biology and control of Aurigena chlorana (Lap. et Gory) (Col.: Buprestidae) which is the most and new harmful on oil roses were investigated in Isparta province. The study has been carried out two temperatures 26±1 o C, 33±1 o C , %65±5 R.H. and 18 hours photoperiod on Rosa damascena Miller. The females laid the average 2371 eggs. The females and males lived for average 96.89, 112.83 days, respectively at 26±1 o C. It was found out that the duration of egg incubation was shorten depending on temperature and this duration was the average 37.94, 22.89 days …

Investigations On The Fertilization Biology Of Some Sweet Cherry Varieties Grown In Pozantı Ecological Conditions, Mehmet Sütyemez, Si̇nan Eti̇

In this study, fertizilation biology of 7 cherry varieties (Sarı, Ömerli, Aksehir Napolyonu, 0900 Ziraat, Merton Marvel, Merton Bigarreau and Noble) was investigated between 1992 and 1993 in Pozanti Research Center. For this purpose, fruit set level in free pollination, self and cross pollination; fruit weight, seed weight, fruit flesh/seed weight ratio, TSS, were examinated. For Sari and Noble all varieties were found to be good pollinizers. Fruit set level changed between 1 % and 45 %. Different pollinizers did not have significant effect on the fruit quality criteria.

In order to carry out these processes, it uses several signaling pathways involving dimerization of GHRs, formation of GHR-JAK2 complex, and activation of the complex by phosphorylation. Middle school science curricula were acquired from three different districts: Community Unit District U-46, Naperville School District 203. and DeKalb Community Unit District #428. There is an increased concern that youths are leaving home earlier than ever. According to the National Network for Youth, 38% of runaways are under the age of 14. Clinicians, as well as researchers, who have worked with the population of runaway youth recognize that there are two distinct groups (i.e., voluntary and involuntary). Previous research has largely neglected the difference between those youths who have left home on their own initiative (voluntary) and those youths who were forced to leave their home (involuntary.) For decades considerable research has focused on improving the efficiency of crop protection. Many naturally occurring biodegradable compounds have often been used as pesticides and with increased environmental concerns, the identification of biologically active natural products has attracted significant attention. Fish toxicity has often been used as a measure of pesticidal activity. Several Southeast Asian mangrove species have been shown to possess ichthyotoxic properties. A bioassay of the extracts obtained from Heritiera littoralis, a Philippine mangrove plant, indicated toxicity toward fish thus suggesting the possibility of their use as pesticides.
