Ontogenetic Habitat Shifts Of Juvenile Bear Lake Sculpin, J. Ruzycki, Wayne A. Wurtsbaugh

Bear lake sculpin Cottus extensus exhibit ontogenetic habitat shifts during their initial year of life. Distribution and habitat switching was measured with bimonthly bottom-trawl surveys repeated throughout the summer. Patterns of daily growth increments on otoliths were used to measure the history of habitat residence, individual size at the time of the habitat switch, and habitat-specific growth rates. Laboratory experiments and known-age fish confirmed daily increment formation of otoliths. After dispersing during an initial pelagic larval stage, postlarval juveniles settled in both the warm, food-rich littoral zone and the cold, unproductive profundal zone. Protecting Communication Departments: Reflections On The Nebraska Experience, Lee Ronald, William Seiler
Journal of the Association for Communication Administration
This article reflects on the vulnerabilities and strengths of communication departments at the University of Nebraska. The relatively small size of communication departments makes them especially vulnerable to administrative budget cutters. For a complex set of reasons, particular disciplines have become defining elements of universities in the U.S. Unfortunately, communication departments have not achieved such status. The professional organizations need to do more than offer the occasional workshop, they ought to make a concerted effort to help communications departments maximize the discipline's opportunity and make the field of communication valuable to students and become ever more essential to the university.

Biotechnology, the duplication of natural processes with artificial procedures and objects, is reshaping the way we see ourselves, and the world around us. Recent advances in genetic engineering have resulted in unprecedented hypotheses about the power and efficacy of the human genetic code. Bmp2, a highly conserved member of the transforming growth factor-beta gene family, is crucial for normal development. Retinoic acid, combined with cAMP analogs, sharply induces the Bmp2 mRNA during the differentiation of F9 embryonal carcinoma cells into parietal endoderm. Retinoic acid (RA) also induces the Bmp2 gene in chick limb buds. Since normal Bmp2 expression may require an endogenous retinoid signal and aberrant Bmp2 expression may cause some aspects of RA-induced teratogenesis, we studied the mechanism underlying the induction of Bmp2. In the filamentous fungus Aspergillus nidulans, germination of an asexual conidiospore results in the formation of a hyphal cell. A key feature of spore germination is the switch from isotropic spore expansion to polarized apical growth. Here, temperature-sensitive mutations are used to characterize the roles of five genes (sepA, hypA, podB–podD) in the establishment and maintenance of hyphal polarity. Evidence that suggests that the hypA, podB, and sepA genes are required for multiple aspects of hyphal morphogenesis is presented. Colletotrichum trifolii is the fungal pathogen of alfalfa that causes anthracnose disease. For successful plant infection, this fungus must undergo a series of morphological transitions following conidial attachment, including germination and subsequent differentiation, resulting in appressorium formation. Our previous studies with pharmacological effectors of signaling pathways have suggested the involvement of cyclic AMP (cAMP)-dependent protein kinase (PKA) during these processes. To more precisely evaluate the role of PKA in C. trifolii morphogenesis, the gene encoding the catalytic (C) subunit of PKA (Ct-PKAC) was isolated, sequenced, and inactivated by gene replacement. Can Large Dsdna-Containing Viruses Provide Information About The Minimal Genome Size Required To Support Life?, James L. Van Etten

The genomes of a few viruses, such as Bacillus megaterium phage G (670 kb) and the chlorella viruses (330 to 380 kb), are larger than the predicted minimal genome size required to support life (ca. 320 kb). A comparison of the 256 proteins predicted to be required for life with the putative 376 proteins encoded by chlorella virus PBCV-1, as well as those encoded by other large viruses, indicates that viruses lack many of these “essential” genes. Consequently, it is unlikely that viruses will aid in determining the minimal number and types of genes required for life. However, viruses may …

The goal of this study was to determine the variation of certain characters in the 72 local sesame populations, which were collected from different sites of Turkey, and develope superior lines with high seed yield, high oil, high oleic and high linoleic acid content via pure line selection. A great deal of variation for the characters examined was found among the populations. 8 out of 72 sesame populations were determined as superior for the characters of seed yield, oil, oleic acid and linoleic acid contents in 1993. 800 single plants for the characters mentioned above were sampled within the superior …
