Ecological And Population Changes In Fishing Communities Of The North Atlantic Arc, Lawrence C. Hamilton, Richard L. Haedrich

In the decades since World War II, large-scale ecological changes have affected fishing communities across the northern Atlantic. Substantial declines hit their historically important resources, most notably the Atlantic cod. Such declines were often accompanied by increases in other, previously less exploited, species. Interactions between fishing pressure and environmental variation have driven ecological change. Ecological changes in turn reshaped the fisheries, contributing to altered demographic profiles of fisheries-dependent communities. Many places lost population, especially through out-migration of young adults. Broad social forces also contributed to these trends, but the timing and geographical details of population changes often correspond to specific …

The vows of the Hippocratic Oath which include a vow to abstain from sharing a patient's personal information remains an important tenet of medical care today. Physician-patient confidentiality even abstains sharing information with patients' families. However, when medical information affects the health of the patient's relatives, many medical professionals assert that they have a duty to share the information, with or without the patient's consent, particularly in the context of children of patients with genetic diseases and disorders, where forewarning may significantly decrease the risks or increase prevention of the effects of the disease or disorder. Estuaries provide habitat and spawning grounds for numerous species of plants, birds, fish and shellfish. Levels of dissolved oxygen, carbon dioxide and pH in estuarine waters vary with diurnal, tidal and seasonal cycles. Anthropogenic factors may further exacerbate these variations in water quality. The studies presented here tested the hypothesis that hypoxia, including hypercapnia and acidosis, suppresses antibacterial defenses provided by phagocytic cells. The respiratory burst of phagocytic cells was stimulated with zymosan and Vibrio parahaemolyticus to produce Reactive Oxygen Species (ROS) which are potent antibacterial agents. The respiratory burst is oxygen dependent and therefore may be inhibited by hypoxic …

Regulation of gene expression occurs at several levels, one being mRNA stability. Cis determinants, such as the poly(A) tail, 3’ and 5’ untranslated regions (UTRs), and coding region sequences along with trans-acting factors contribute significantly to mRNA stability. Our research focuses on the 3’ UTR of epidermal growth factor receptor (EGF-R) mRNA and its potential role as a stability determinant. For this study, a chimeric construct was created containing the well-characterized rabbit 13-globin gene with the EGF-R 3’ UTR replacing the 13-globin 3’ UTR (pBBUIII). Attitude change of approximately 200 undergraduate students' attitudes towards the elderly was assessed. To measure attitude change a modified version of the Kogan Attitudes Toward Old People Scale (1961) was administered to college students at the beginning and end of the semester. The three courses varied in content regarding older adults and the aging process. The aging and the family class focused entirely on aging and required contact with an older adult. The human development class focused on the lifespan and included a segment on aging, while the child development class acted as the control group with no course content …

The defining line between legal and illegal substance-between dietary supplement and drug is horribly skewed. Accordingly, Part I of this Note will investigate the complexities that exist with regard to the classification and regulation of dietary supplements, looking at the history leading to the passage of the governing Dietary Health and Supplement Act of 1994. Epithelial cells of the gut, antennal glands, integument, and gills of crustaceans regulate the movements of ions into and across these structures and thereby influence the concentrations of ions in the hemolymph. Specific transport proteins serving cations and anions are found on apical and basolateral cell membranes of epithelia in these tissues. In recent years, a considerable research effort has been directed at elucidating their physiological and molecular properties and relating these characteristics to the overall biology of the organisms. This article returns to the earlier Gwaltney decision, looking both to the text of the Gwaltney opinion, and to internal memoranda demonstrating the debate which occurred among the justices themselves over the nature of the beast with which they were dealing: a confusing mixture of subject matter jurisdiction, substantive cause of action and constitutionally based standing requirements. This review leads to the conclusion that the opinion's lack of analytical clarity, which created substantial confusion for courts and litigants, could have been avoided by a more carefully reasoned work based on the Court's internal discussions. The research program has made a major contribution to the improvement of pasture management techniques, which has, in turn, led to a gain in productivity for dairy farms in the south-west of Western Australia. Analysis has shown a 25 per cent improvement in pasture utilisation, an increase in the average number of cows milked from 155 to 192, an increase in average stocking rates from 0.9 to 1.2 cows per hectare, and increased income from milk sales by $600 per hectare. There are still areas for improvement in sustainability, productivity, and profitability, but the success to date is a credit …

Eradicating Virulent Footrot From Western Australia, R K. Mitchell

Western Australia has a unique opportunity to eradicate virulent footrot from the State's sheep flock, with only 62 properties or 0.6 per cent of sheep properties currently in quarantine. The majority of Western Australian flocks are now free of virulent footrot, with targeted on-farm and abattoir surveillance used to detect the remaining properties affected by the disease. Bob Mitchell reports on how farmers, industry, and government are working together, with research playing an important part in the eradication campaign.
