China is currently the leading source of babies for intercountry adoption in the United States. This Comment explores the causes of this phenomenon, and the ability of the 1993 Hague Convention on Protection of Children and Cooperation in Respect of Intercountry Adoption to serve the interests of both the abandoned and orphaned children, and the adoptive parents under these specific circumstances.

Breast cancer, is the second leading cause of cancer related deaths among women in developed countries, and the incidence of morbidity and mortality is rising in developing countries. The purpose of this project was to utilize the differential display technique to identify genetic changes in normal versus malignant breast tissue. It was also used in a defined cell culture system having differential cellular characteristics, to identify genes that may be responsible for different biological behavior of these cell lines. This Comment examines the extent to which the Intellectual Property and International Trade Court (IPIT) satisfies the intellectual property enforcement provisions of Agreement on Trade-Related Aspects of Intellectual Property Rights (TRIPs). Part I presents the legal environment of intellectual property in Thailand before TRIPs, the background of TRIPs, and the enforcement requirements of TRIPs. Part II discusses the legislation creating the IPIT Court, and assesses the enforcement procedures as prescribed by the legislation that created the IPIT Court and as employed by the IPIT Court. The International Legal Implications Of "Non-Lethal" Weapons, David P. Fidler

In this Article, the author attempts a comprehensive international legal analysis of "non-lethal" weapons to raise awareness about how many international legal issues they create and about the complexity of analyzing the international legality of the development and use of these weapons. In short, the emergence of "non-lethal" weapons does not rescue international law from its crisis in connection with controlling war. Indeed, in some respects, the coming of "non-lethal" weapons threatens to deepen that crisis in new and disturbing ways.

Seasonal Variation In Phenolic Constituents Of Hazelnut (Coryllus Avellana L.) And Chestnut (Castanea Sativa Mill.) Leaves And Shoots, Şükri̇ye Kurnaz Bi̇lgi̇ner

Turkish Journal of Agriculture and Forestry

In this research, the seasonal variation in total phenolic contents in hazelnut and chestnut leaves and shoots was determined. In addition, the phenolic compounds extracted by aqueous alcohol or obtained by acid hydrolysis of the leaves and shoots were separated by paper chromatography (PC). The total phenolic contents of the chestnut leaves and shoots were higher than the hazelnut. In both species, the young shoots had higher total phenolic contents than one year old shoots. The total phenolic content of hazelnut leaves did not show a significant variation, but it rose up to a relatively higher level in August and …

Subjects included 17 female college students, aged 19 to 44 yrs. Subjects were assigned to 1 of 3 specific training protocols and performed lift-assisted (LA) pull-ups (PU) and/or LA bar dips (BD) for a period of 12 weeks. PU and BD performance were compared at 0, 4, 8 and 12 weeks training. Flexed arm hang (FAH), modified pull-up (MPU) and push-up exercises were compared at 0 and 12 weeks. Excerpt: "Clinical neuropsychology is primarily concerned with how expressions of behavior are affected by brain dysfunction (Lezak, 1995). A neuropsychological assessment consists of a series of systematic clinical diagnostic procedures used to determine the extent of behavioral or cognitive deficits after a person sustains brain injury or damage (see Brain Injuries). It initially involves a clinical interview in which detailed information about the patient's history, premorbid functioning, and factors surrounding the precipitation of the dysfunction or damage are gathered. During cruise "La Bocaina 0497" a series of 14 tows with a commercial pelagic trawl at depths between 20 and 700 m and an acoustic survey with a SIMRAD EK-500 echosounder were carried out in neritic and adjacent oceanic waters off Lanzarote, Fuerteventura, and Gran Canaria, Canary islands. In addition, SST images were obtained to get some informations on the prevailing hydrological conditions in the study area.

Of the 14 trawl tows ten were successful and resulted in capture of a total of 2166 fishes belonging to 81 species, 53 genera and 28 families. Ten species proved to be new …

This thesis consists of three sections. In the first one, we overview the basic concepts and results of computation theory, the relationship with formal language theory, and present an introduction to the possible applications to different biological systems. The second section deals with the role of noise in the transmission of information in neurons. Telomere function is carried out by protein factors that either bind directly to telomeric DNA or that are recruited there by DNA binding activities. Thus, telomeric DNA binding activities are central to telomere function. Two types of vertebrate DNA binding activities are characterized in this thesis: proteins that can potentially bind to the 3' overhang of TTAGGG repeats and proteins that bind to duplex telomeric DNA. We have identified, characterized and partially purified an activity from chicken erythrocytes (ATEF) that has the biochemical properties expected for a telomere terminus factor. Protein import and export into and out of the cell nucleus requires a signal in the protein to be transported. Furthermore, several factors are involved in recognition of the signal, delivery of the protein to the nuclear pore complex (NPC) and its subsequent translocation across the NPC. We have biochemically analyzed the mechanism of nuclear protein import and export using all recombinant factors from Saccharomyces cerevisiae. Using solution binding assays, GTP hydrolysis and exchange assays, as well as surface plasmon resonance we have identified various interactions between different components of the transport machinery.
