The Economic Value Of Alaska's Copper River Personal-Use And Subsistence Fisheries, Michelle Jones, S. Todd Lee, Keith R. Criddle
Economic Research Institute Study Papers
Commercial, sport, and personal-use and subsistence fishers share the salmon harvest on the Copper River, Alaska. The allocation of salmon among these user groups is a contentious and recurring issue. Economic analyses, along with biological, legal, social and cultural considerations, have the potential to help policy makers appreciate the consequences of alternative allocations. The zonal travel cost method is used to estimate the net economic value (consumer surplus) of the Copper River Basin personal-use and subsistence fisheries. Elusive Documents
The Wellsville Mountains raptor migration study in northern Utah is an ongoing effort to monitor longterm trends in populations of raptors using this northern Rocky Mountain migratory flyway. Raptors feed atop food pyramids, inhabit most ecosystems, occupy large home ranges, and are sensitive to environmental contamination and other human disturbances. Therefore, they serve as important biological indicators of ecosystem health (Cade et al. 1988; Bednarz et al. 1990a; Bildstein and Zalles 1995). For example, long-term migration counts in the eastern United States documented declines in several raptor species and helped us understand the deleterious effects of organochlorine pesticides (Spofford 1969, …

-Sixty-nine different stands within 15 different previously managed communities were sampled in what is now the Turkey Hill Wilderness of the Angelina National Forest. Within each stand, 0.04 ha plots were randomly located, and the height, diameter, crown class and species of each tree recorded. Soil samples were collected in two locations within each plot, and the soil type confirmed at plot center. Soil samples were analyzed for selected soil chemical and physical properties. Management Of Droughty Site: Typic Quartzipsamments, Ecological Considerations, David Kulhavy, W. G. Ross, L. Allen Smith, R. R. Cahal

Pine plantations on Typic Quartzipsamments in East Texas are difficult to establish. Forest management options following clearcutting are limited. A 12 year regeneration study of the growth and survival of loblolly, Pinus faeda, L. shortleaf, P. echinata Mill., slash, f. elliofii Engelm and longleaf pines P. pa/u&is Mill. was conducted to determine optimum tree species and treatments for reforestation. With successful regeneration also comes insects and pathogens. Impacts of the Nantucket pine tip moth, Rhyacionia frusfrana, (Comstock) and the Texas leaf-cutting ant, Affa texana, (Buckley) will be discussed in the context of droughty site management.

Understory woody vegetation in red-cockaded woodpecker nesting clusters located in Pinus taeda (L.) and P. echinara (Mill.) dominated stands were inventoried from December 1986 through January 1987 and later in January 1995 to determine what effects court-ordered management schemes had on the composition, abundance, and diversity of these stands. In January 1998, three tracts in Hardin County, TX, were hand-planted with seven species of 1-0 bareroot bottomland hardwood seedlings. The tracts, managed by The Nature Conservancy of Texas, were previously 20-year-old pine plantations. The tracts are located within the floodplain of Village Creek. An objective for this conversion is the restoration of a bottomland hardwood wetland in order to meet Clean Water Act requirements. A pre-harvest plant inventory was conducted for each tract. Previous studies have indicated that detoxification of their hosts’ phytoalexins is a tolerance mechanism for some true fungi, but not the fungus-like Oomycota, and may be involved in determining the virulence of a pathogen. In the present study, the associations between demethylation of the pea phytoalexin pisatin, tolerance to pisatin, and virulence on pea were examined for 50 fungal isolates which represent 17 species of pathogens and nonpathogens of pea. All isolates of Pythium coloratum and P. irregulare failed to metabolize and were sensitive to pisatin, consistent with previous observations that members of the Oomycota generally lack the ability …

A review of existing land-use planning decisions is being conducted to evaluate how to best manage public lands, resources, educational opportunities, and other values associated with the recent discovery of dinosaur tracks on BLM-administered public lands near Shell, Wyoming. The tracks were not addressed in the Washakie Resource Management Plan (RMP) which was completed in 1988. A review of BLM's planning decisions for the discovery area is needed to evaluate the adequacy of existing management prescriptions for the protection of the tracks and related values.

Investigation On The Isolation And Identification Of The Listeria Species In The White And Civil Cheeses Purchased From Erzurum Region, A. Aydan Kara, Ömer Faruk Algur, Mükerrem Kaya

In this study, 34 white cheeses and 16 civil (local name) cheeses purchased from markets and shops in Erzurum during the period of January 1995-April 1996 were analysed. The samples were streaked directly onto LSA and Palcam Agar media in Petri Plates and incubated at 37C° for 48 hours. After the incubation, the growing colonies on LSA-agar plates were examined by Henry's Modified IIIumination Method while collonies on Palcam agar were examined by naked eye. Some people would argue that mathematics cannot be taught in a Christian way. Others would say it can be done, but that they are unsure how to do it, and therefore do not do it. Some methods mentioned from time to time will be briefly discussed in this address. The question will be asked whether these techniques bring one closer to a Christian perspective on mathematics. My view is that some of these methods are just not sufficient and that more should be done. More attention should be paid to the context in which a mathematical subject is imbedded. Attention …

Mathematics, as an academic discipline, has stood for many years as the last bastion against a growing tide of intellectual relativism that has become all but ubiquitous. More recently, however, efforts have been made to "humanize" mathematics by advocating a social-constructivist approach to the philosophy of mathematics, both in practice and education. This paper is intended to serve as a critical response to one advocate of this approach, Reuben Hersh (What Is Mathematics, Really?, 1997), and in the process a defense of Platonism.

Plant And Breeding Bird Communities Of Black-Tailed Prairie Dog Colonies And Non-Colonized Areas In Southwest Kansas And Southeast Colorado, Stephen L. Winter

This research was initiated to determine if plant and bird communities on black-tailed prairie dog (Cynomys ludovicianus Ord) colonies in southwest Kansas and southeast Colorado differed from those found on associated non-colonized areas. Vegetation height and density, and the cover and frequency of numerous plant species differed between prairie dog colonies and non-colonized areas that were co-dominated by mid-height grasses and shortgrasses. A comparison of prairie dog colonies with non-colonized areas that were dominated solely by shortgrasses did not reveal a difference in vegetation height and density.
