The Effects Of An Interactive Multimedia Program On Teachers' Understanding And Implementation Of An Inclusive Practice, Joseph B. Fisher, Donald D. Deshler, Jean B. Schumaker Apr 1999

The Effects Of An Interactive Multimedia Program On Teachers' Understanding And Implementation Of An Inclusive Practice, Joseph B. Fisher, Donald D. Deshler, Jean B. Schumaker

Peer Reviewed Articles

The effects of an interactive multimedia program on teachers' understanding and implementation of an inclusive practice were examined. Fifty-eight pre-service teachers and 10 in-service teachers were randomly assigned to one of two teacher development programs. The first, called the Virtual Workshop, was a computer-based, interactive multimedia program. The second, called the Actual Workshop, was a traditional, live, presenter-directed program. Results indicated that compared to their pretest scores, the post-test scores earned by participants on the tests of knowledge and understanding of the inclusive practice significantly improved after participation in both workshops. No statistically significant difference was found between the post-test …

Muir Center Newsletters (1981-2015)

NEWSLETTER c Reconstructing John Mum's First Public Lecture, Sacramento, 1876 by Steve Pauly, Pleasant Hill, California (Editor's Note: In our previous issue, Steve Pauley's article placed John Muir's first public talk in context. Wmere is his re-creation of some sections of the talk.) n the beginning of the long glacial winter, the lofty Sierra seems to have consisted of one vast undulated wave, in which a thousand separate mountains, with their domes and spires, their innumerable canons and lake basins, lay concealed. In the development of these, the Master Builder chose for a tool, not the earthquake nor lightning to …

Influence Of Crop Rotation, Tillage, And Management Inputs On Weed Seed Production, George O. Kegode, Frank Forcella, Sharon Clay Apr 1999

Influence Of Crop Rotation, Tillage, And Management Inputs On Weed Seed Production, George O. Kegode, Frank Forcella, Sharon Clay

Agronomy, Horticulture and Plant Science Faculty Publications

Approaches to crop production that successfully reduce weed seed production can benefit farming systems by reducing management inputs and costs. A 5-yr rotation study was conducted in order to determine the effects that interactions between crop rotation, tillage, and amount of herbicide and fertilizer (management inputs) have on annual grass and broad-leaved weed seed production and fecundity. There were 10 crop rotation and tillage system combinations and three levels of management inputs (high, medium, and low). Green and yellow foxtail were the major weed species, and together they yielded between 76 and 93% of collected weed seeds. From 1990 to …

Combined Microautoradiography–16s Rrna Probe Technique For Determination Of Radioisotope Uptake By Specific Microbial Cell Types In Situ, Cleber C. Ouverney, Jed A. Fuhrman Apr 1999

Combined Microautoradiography–16s Rrna Probe Technique For Determination Of Radioisotope Uptake By Specific Microbial Cell Types In Situ, Cleber C. Ouverney, Jed A. Fuhrman

Faculty Publications, Biological Sciences

We propose a novel method for studying the function of specific microbial groups in situ. Since natural microbial communities are dynamic both in composition and in activities, we argue that the microbial “black box” should not be regarded as homogeneous. Our technique breaks down this black box with group-specific fluorescent 16S rRNA probes and simultaneously determines 3H-substrate uptake by each of the subgroups present via microautoradiography (MAR). Total direct counting, fluorescent in situ hybridization, and MAR are combined on a single slide to determine (i) the percentages of different subgroups in a community, (ii) the percentage of total cells in …

Environmental Imperatives Reconsidered, Terry L. Jones, Gary M. Brown, L. Mark Raab, Janet L. Mcvickar, W. Geoffrey Spaulding, Douglas J. Kennett, Andrew York, Phillip L. Walker

Social Sciences

Review of late Holocene paleoenvironmental and cultural sequences from four regions of western North America shows striking correlations between drought and changes in subsistence, population, exchange, health, and interpersonal violence during the Medieval Climatic Anomaly (a.d. 800–1350). While ultimate causality is difficult to identify in the archaeological record, synchrony of the environmental and cultural changes and the negative character of many human responses—increased interpersonal violence, deterioration of long-distance exchange relationships, and regional abandonments—suggest widespread demographic crises caused by decreased environmental productivity. The medieval droughts occurred at a unique juncture in the demographic history of western North America when unusually large …
