The Surface Water Treatment Rule under the Safe Drinking Water Act requires that all surface water sources used for drinking water must be filtered, unless the purveyor can demonstrate that the water is of such high quality that filtration is not required. The New York City Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) operates the New York City water supply system and is taking actions to ensure that the water supplied from the Catskill -- Delaware system remains of high enough quality to maintain an avoidance of filtration determination granted by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). Comparative Molecular Field Analysis (Comfa) Of Phenyl Ring Substituted Methylphenidates, Milind Misra

Comparative Molecular Field Analysis (CoMFA) was performed on 30 methylphenidate analogues having phenyl ring substituents at the 2-, 3-, and 4-positions in an attempt to explain the structure-activity relationships of the analogues. Several CoMFA studies were carried out using different conformations of methylphenidate as the template structures for the corresponding alignment rules. The identification of the bioactive conformation was variously based on the interfeature distances in WIN 35,428, on cluster analysis, and on a comparison of active methylphenidate analogues. The sensitivity of the models to various CoMFA parameters was compared. These parameters included altering the size and spacing of the …

UniverCity News, 1998-2001
VCU Today, the University’s first official administrative organ, began as a somewhat irregular monthly publication but moved to a bi-weekly newspaper format in the 1980s. The newspaper changed its name to VCU Voice in 1988 and ten years later it appeared under the title UniverCity News. As it neared the end of its run as a physical newspaper, the publication became simply VCU News. These four publications were essentially the same periodical published under different titles by the Office of University Relations. VCU News appeared online for the first time in 2002.

The existence, nature, and physiological consequences of genetic variation for juvenile hormone esterase (JHE) activity was studied in the wing-polymorphic cricket, Gryllus firmus. Hemolymph (blood) JHE activity was sixfold lower in nascent short-winged (SW) females, relative to nascent long-winged (LW) females, during the last juvenile stadium (stage). Morph-associated genetic variation for JHE activity had two causes, variation in loci: (1) regulating whole-organism enzyme activity; and (2) controlling the degree to which JHE is secreted into the blood. Reduced JHE activity in nascent SW-selected individuals was associated with reduced in vivo juvenile hormone catabolism. This suggests that variation in JHE …

A New Method For Preparing Self-Assembled Lipid Bilayers On Pt Electrode, Peng Diao, Dian-Lu Jiang, Xiao-Li Cui, Deng-Ping Gu, Ru-Ting Tong

A new method for preparing Pt-supported bilayer lipid membrane (Pt-BLM) on Pt electrode cleaned by high power ultrasound was reported. The reported method was convenient, costing less platinum and could be used to form large-area Pt-BLM as compared with the traditional Pt-wire-cutting method. The electrical properties of Pt-BLM were studied using electrochemical impedance spectroscopy and cyclic voltammetry. Experimental results showed that the values of membrane capacitance and the voltammetric characteristics were consistent with those of Pt-BLM prepared by traditional method.

Direct Electrolysis Of Seawater On Conducting Film For Microbial Anticorrosion 1. Simulation And Measurement Technique, Wei-Ling Hu, Ling-Ling Wu, Jing Zhou, Jing-Xin Li, Jin Luo, Zhong-Hua Lin

Based on the electrochemical micro probe and the weak signal detection technique, simulated test and measurement system were set up by the use of four-electrode cell(including a micro electrode), bipotentiostat, lock-in amplifier and three-dimensional micro manipulating device. Based on the system, the micrometer scale concentration distribution of trace hypochlorite, which is produced by direct electrolysis of seawater on the conducting film for preventing microbial corrosion has been obtained for the first time. Both relationships between concentration of hypochlorite and its reduction current, which is termed an working curve, and between the reduction current of hypochlorite and measured time are reported.

In a series of papers, the most recent of which was published in Evolution, quantitative-genetic experiments were undertaken on reproductive and physiological correlates of wing polymorphism in the sand cricket, Gryllus firmus (Fairbairn 1994; Fairbairn and Yadlowski 1997; Roff et al. 1997). A goal of these studies was to determine the physiological causes underlying: (1) genetic variation for an ecologically important threshold trait (wing polymorphism); and (2) genetic correlations between wing morph and other reproductive and migratory features, such as fecundity and flight muscle histolysis. Ellipsometric measurements are often extremely sensitive to the presence of very thin surface layers,to changes in their thickness (or coverage), and to changes in surface topography at an atomic scale. These characteristics make the use of ellipsometry for electrochemical studies particularly attractive. The ellipsometric studies on electrochemistry and its applications carried out in the Electrochemical Laboratory of Chongqing University are reviewed briefly: 1)The studies on electrochemistry of classical ellipsometry. 2)The new function Vop suggested by the authors. 3)The applications of new approcaches with new function Vop suggested by the authors.

The intracellular generation of reactive oxygen species, together with the thioredoxin and glutathione systems, is thought to participate in redox signaling in mammalian cells. The activity of thioredoxin is dependent on the redox status of thioredoxin reductase (TR), the activity of which in turn is dependent on a selenocysteine residue. Two mammalian TR isozymes (TR2 and TR3), in addition to that previously characterized (TR1), have now been identified in humans and mice. All three TR isozymes contain a selenocysteine residue that is located in the penultimate position at the carboxyl terminus and which is encoded by a UGA codon. The …
