Bifurcations Of Consciousness: The Elimination Of The Self-Induced Intoxication Excuse, Derrick Augustus Carter

Missouri Law Review

In early American and English common law, intoxication evidence did not excuse or mitigate criminal behavior.! Any person who destroyed his or her volition through intoxication was equally as culpable as a sober person for the legal consequences of a self-induced vice.2 Voluntary drunkenness aggravated, rather than reduced, criminal liability

Factors Influencing Prison Industry, Erik Dill Apr 1999

Factors Influencing Prison Industry, Erik Dill

Masters Theses

Prison industry has a sporadic history in the United States. Interstate trade of prison made goods was banned from 1940 until 1979; business and labor opposed slavelike competition from early programs. This thesis studies competitive prisoner work, deemed prison industry, as different from state-use labor.

Formal theory on prison industry is inadequate. Rusche would suggest that unemployment directly effects incarceration, and prison industry develops to provide labor in economic upswings. Since 1980 prison industry expanded and unemployment fell, but incarceration did not decline. Therefore, this study focuses on theory genesis. Explanations for incarceration can assume prison is exploitative. Legal history …

Review Of The Brandon Teena Story Produced And Directed By Susan Muska And Greta Olafsdottir, June Perry Levine

Great Plains Quarterly (through 2013)

CRIME AND RESPONSIBILITY

The Brandon Teena Story, Susan Muska and Greta Olafsdottir's recently released documentary, addresses the circumstances of a triple murder that occurred on the last day of December 1993 in a rural farmhouse in southeastern Nebraska. The crime received national media coverage because one of its victims, the principal target of the attack, was a young woman who had, for some time, been living as a man. The two other victims, a young man and woman, were killed because they were witnesses. The murderers were quickly apprehended and tried, one sentenced to life in prison, the other …

FOCUS on Boise State

As in the story of the lion and the mouse, acts of charity and kindness often have a lifelong impact on both the recipient and the giver. In this issue of FOCUS, we look at volunteerism at Boise State and highlight the generosity and compassion of some members of the Boise State community- including stories about two groups of Boise State students who traveled to Latin America, providing assistance to a Mexican orphanage and an El Salvador hospital. Cover illustration by Boise State art professor William Carman.

Mass Media And The Death Penalty: Social Construction Of Three Nebraska Executions, Jeremy Harris Lipschultz, Michael L. Hilt
