Domestic Violence In The Hyperreal: An Examination Of Race And Ethnicity In "Real Life" Police Drama, Melissa J Monson

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

This project investigates public representations of domestic violence by highlighting televised reality-based police dramas (e.g., COPS, L.A.P.D.: Life on the Beat, Real Stories of the Highway Patrol, etc.). Specifically, it focuses on the intersection of race, class, and gender in the portrayal of police treatment of victims and suspects of domestic violence. The data for this research were gathered through the use of latent and manifest content analysis. Seventy-two hours (including commercials) of reality based programing were recorded for analysis, making 144 total individual shows and 48 episodes of each program; In general, police officers were portrayed as treating domestic …

The Racial Composition Of Prisons And The Conditions Of Confinement, Shannan Michelle Catalano Jan 1999

The Racial Composition Of Prisons And The Conditions Of Confinement, Shannan Michelle Catalano

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

Historically, Blacks have been subjected to both capricious and extreme methods of social control. Despite a generation of criminal justice reform, many argue that the social inequities of our past are too deeply interwoven in the social fabric to be extricated, resulting in discrimination which has become institutionalized. Of sociological interest is the manner in which differential outcomes in the criminal justice system may be a manifestation of differential treatment on the basis of race. Equally important are the possible determinants, such as race, of differing reactions to certain inmate populations; In recent years, many studies have addressed the question …

Transcendent Leader Centered Analysis: A Reconstructive Approach To Social Movement Analysis, Kurt Ulrich Coleman Jan 1999

Transcendent Leader Centered Analysis: A Reconstructive Approach To Social Movement Analysis, Kurt Ulrich Coleman

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

This essay proposed a framework for social movement analysis that extends postmodern deconstructive techniques to a form of reconstruction which transcends the exploration of how language can say many different things simultaneously. By assessing the rhetoric of a movement, the leaders' view of conflict, pattern of expressing conflict, and the dynamic of identity in the escalation of conflict are revealed. James R. Andrews! (1980) method was utilized which concentrates on the leaders' manipulation of language, the "move" of a movement, in determining a conflicts directionality. Case studies analyzed the movements which led to the 1980 Miami Riot and the 1992 …

Exploring The Situational Context Of Criminal Assaults And Batteries, Gini Rene Deibert Jan 1999

Exploring The Situational Context Of Criminal Assaults And Batteries, Gini Rene Deibert

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

Social scientists are increasingly aware of the significance of examining crime events and the situational context of crime. This paper extends that research by exploring the physical and social aspects of assaults. Guided by research on masculinity, status threats, and character contests, this study uses police data to examine the situational dynamics of dispute-related assaults; Specifically, this study differentiates two types of dispute-related violence: character contests and noncharacter contests. Numerous situational variables are examined to assess the significance of their relationship with the likelihood of an offense being a character contest; By comparing character contests to other types of dispute-related …

Battered Women: Exploring Motivating Factors To Leave Or Remain In Violent Relationships, Lora Ellen Kirn Jan 1999

Battered Women: Exploring Motivating Factors To Leave Or Remain In Violent Relationships, Lora Ellen Kirn

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

The current study explores factors motivating women to leave or remain in violent relationships from an interactionist perspective. Literature reviewed will integrate gender socialization and labeling with studies on domestic violence to investigate a woman's role in becoming a victim and her responses to violent relationships. Interview data from women residing in a domestic violence shelter examine the label "battered woman" insofar as it may serve as a catalyst for leaving an abusive relationship once a woman identifies with being a battered woman. Further, a woman's view of her role, commitment to family maintenance, and children in the home are …

Women In Prison: Do Visits From Children Influence Inmate Behavior?, Melissa Marie Cozad

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

The number of women in prison is increasing at an alarming rate in the United States today. Because nearly 75 percent of incarcerated women are mothers of minor children, the issue of maintaining family relations deserves special attention. This study examines child visitation and its relationship to female behavior inside the priSon If women who receive visits adjust more easily to prison life, prison administrators would be wise to note these benefits; Data was collected at a private female prison in North Las Vegas, Nevada. Information on visitation and disciplinary infractions was gathered from inmate files and visitation records at …

United States Probation/Pretrial Officers' Concerns About Victimization And Officer Safety Training, Kevin D Lowry Jan 1999

United States Probation/Pretrial Officers' Concerns About Victimization And Officer Safety Training, Kevin D Lowry

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

In June of 1991, the Monograph 109 supervision manual changed the role of the U.S. Probation/Pretrial Officer from predominately that of a social worker to an enforcement agent. Officers now perform enforcement activities and supervise a more dangerous clientele. This shift in responsibilities did not result in increased safety training. Safety issues have become a major concern for many officers; The current research involved a national survey of U.S. Probation/Pretrial Officers to measure levels of victimization, concerns for personal safety and satisfaction for safety training. The results indicate that few officers were victims of physical assaults but a majority reported …

Examining Specialized Drug Courts: An Evaluation Of The Las Vegas Drug Court Treatment Program, Erin Nicole Reese Jan 1999

Examining Specialized Drug Courts: An Evaluation Of The Las Vegas Drug Court Treatment Program, Erin Nicole Reese

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

Developed in response to overcrowded jails and backlogged court dockets, drug courts use comprehensive treatment and graduated sanctions to deal with drug offenders. This study evaluates the Las Vegas Drug Court in terms of its effectiveness in reducing recidivism by comparing data for drug court cases with drug cases not processed in the drug court. The results indicate that recidivism rates for drug court participants are significantly higher than for non-drug court participants. These findings suggest that further research should be conducted about the impact and utility of drug courts.

Crack As A Moral Panic: The Racial Implications Inherent To Crack And Powder Cocaine Sentencing, Deena R Trueblood Jan 1999

Crack As A Moral Panic: The Racial Implications Inherent To Crack And Powder Cocaine Sentencing, Deena R Trueblood

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

This thesis explores the nature and extent of the print media's coverage of crack cocaine to determine whether a moral panic ensued during the late 1980's. A content analysis was conducted on the Los Angeles Times from 1985 to 1990, examining both the nature and extent of the Los Angeles Times' coverage of crack cocaine as well as the relationship between this drug and its association with Blacks. The findings of the content analysis provided support for the hypothesis that a moral panic did in fact take place in the late 1980s with respect to crack cocaine. Further, that this …

Concealed Carry Weapon Permits And Their Relationship To Crime In Las Vegas, Gary Wayne Yuen Jan 1999

Concealed Carry Weapon Permits And Their Relationship To Crime In Las Vegas, Gary Wayne Yuen

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

Permits allowing qualified citizens to legally carry a concealed weapon ("CCWs") in public have become increasingly popular. Nevada adopted more lenient CCW standards in October of 1995, and an unprecedented number of legally armed citizens in the public has resulted. Supporters of CCWs claim the right to self-defense with less crime resulting. Critics claim more armed citizens will only produce more violence and crime; To answer this debate, the following was conducted; (1) a literature review of private firearm ownership, including CCWs, and crime, (2) an analysis based on Las Vegas' Uniform Crime Reports rates before and after adopting these …

Handling Police Misconduct In An Ethical Way, Daniel Patrick Barry Jan 1999

Handling Police Misconduct In An Ethical Way, Daniel Patrick Barry

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

Police misconduct has always been a serious problem in America. Historically, reform efforts have failed due to an organizational culture that is resistant to change. Past reforms have been aimed at individual incidents, disregarding underlying organizational problems. Improving public perception has been the goal of past reforms, as opposed to improving organizational soundness; Reform efforts need to be directed at enhancing police organizational culture. These changes will improve workplace ethos, allowing virtuous conduct to flourish. Advancing this organizational culture will encourage police officers to act in a manner consistent with the high trust we vest in this vocation; Justice, Truthfulness …

Community-Based Corrections: Offender Characteristics And Success In A Halfway House, Ana Maria Del Carmen Gutierrez Jan 1999

Community-Based Corrections: Offender Characteristics And Success In A Halfway House, Ana Maria Del Carmen Gutierrez

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

Prison crowding and tight correctional budgets over the past decade have sparked renewed interest in alternative or community-based sentencing options. These non-incarcerative sentences hold the potential for both reining in skyrocketing costs and also providing a more effective setting for rehabilitative interventions. One type of community-based program is the halfway house. Halfway houses are most often used to ease the transition of offenders from the prison to the community by providing temporary housing, job placement assistance, and other services. In addition, in many jurisdictions courts are sentencing offenders directly to halfway houses as a part of the conditions of probation. …

Foreward, 1998-99 Board Of Editors

Utah Law Review

On September 19, 1998, the University of Utah College of Law sponsored the annual Utah Law Review Symposium. This year we addressed a newly emerging topic that had, to date, been the subject of very little scholarly discussion. Specifically, the "Crime Victims' Rights in the Twenty- First Century" Symposium explored the controversy concerning the role crime victims should play in the criminal justice system and whether a federal constitutional amendment should be adopted to address this role. The Utah Law Review is very proud of the nationally recognized scholars and practitioners who agreed to participate in this landmark event. The …

Treating Kids Right, Christopher Slobogin Jan 1999

Treating Kids Right, Christopher Slobogin

Vanderbilt Law School Faculty Publications

The concept of amenability to treatment is, in theory, at the core of juvenile delinquency jurisprudence. From its inception as an entity separate from the adult criminal court, the juvenile court was meant to focus on the rehabilitative potential of children. On this premise, the central inquiry in a juvenile delinquency proceeding should be whether the child found delinquent is amenable to treatment. Disposition should depend upon the rehabilitative potential and needs of the juvenile, and only if no treatment is available in the juvenile system should transfer to adult court be considered. In practice, amenability to treatment may never …
