Meaning And Measurement: Reconceptualizing Measures Of The Division Of Household Labor, Joan E. Twiggs, Julia Mcquillan, Myra Marx Feree Aug 1999

Meaning And Measurement: Reconceptualizing Measures Of The Division Of Household Labor, Joan E. Twiggs, Julia Mcquillan, Myra Marx Feree

Department of Sociology: Faculty Publications

This article argues that task-specific measures of the division of household labor form a gender hierarchy that reflects dimensions of meaning in the organization of household work. We contrast these measures to the commonly used time-share and Likert scale measures, which assume all tasks are interchangeable. Using Guttman scaling, we test the unidimensionality of this task hierarchy. Using odds ratios, we measure relationships between specific tasks, and using logistic regression, we see differences in correlates of husbands’ participation by task and interrelationships among tasks that persist, controlling for gender ideology and socioeconomic factors. This work should encourage development of measures …

A Research Based Approach To The Development Of Educational Programs For Extension Clientele: A Case Study On Land Use Issues In Ohio, Stephen Hudkins, Thomas W. Blaine Aug 1999

A Research Based Approach To The Development Of Educational Programs For Extension Clientele: A Case Study On Land Use Issues In Ohio, Stephen Hudkins, Thomas W. Blaine

Journal of Extension

In response to concerns expressed by clientele, Extension educators working in Portage County, Ohio initiated a series of surveys of public attitudes regarding land use. The results revealed that respondents were deeply concerned about preserving farmland and rural character, but did not believe they had adequate knowledge as a community to make prudent land use decisions. Use of these results assisted Extension personnel in developing educational programs designed to acquaint clientele with an array of land use tools and farmland preservation methods that might be adopted in the future.

An Evaluation Of An Agricultural Innovation: Justification For Participatory Assistance, Robert N. King, Timothy J. Rollins Aug 1999

An Evaluation Of An Agricultural Innovation: Justification For Participatory Assistance, Robert N. King, Timothy J. Rollins

Journal of Extension

This article describes and assesses the adoption of a nitrogen testing innovation as a result of an Extension education program. Focus groups and a mail survey provided feedback concerning factors, variables and technology transfer strategies associated with the adoption of this innovation. Farmers indicated that economic factors and information sources impacted their adoption decisions. Results indicated that a more holistic, multi-disciplinary approach to and understanding of the decision-making processes of farmers may have improved the outcome of the educational program. Adoption of this innovation may have been improved if farmers had participated in the research, development and introduction of this …

Are Open-Ended Questions Tying You In Knots?, J Reynaldo A. Santos, Diann Mitchell, Paul Pope

Journal of Extension

Customer surveys are the mainstay of the Extension Service and have always served as conduits for collecting feedback about planned, ongoing, or concluded projects. While it is most desirable to design survey questions where respondents can categorically indicate their preferred answers, there are instances when a researcher wants to capture unbiased, unconstrained, and thoughtful responses via open-ended questions unavailable by any other means. Unlike structured questionnaires, which are easily handled by most statistical software, responses to open-ended questions seem to defy programming logic and are usually treated as ordinary character strings by computer programmers. This paper shows a possible technique …

The Relationship Between Cosmopolitan-Local Orientation And Job Satisfaction Among Admissions Personnel At Christian Colleges In The United States And Canada, Jon P. Harr Aug 1999

The Relationship Between Cosmopolitan-Local Orientation And Job Satisfaction Among Admissions Personnel At Christian Colleges In The United States And Canada, Jon P. Harr

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

In recent years, the challenges facing college admissions professionals have increased, and turnover in the field has become an area of concern. A review of the literature indicated that surprisingly little research had been done in the area of job satisfaction for college admissions professionals and, in particular, Christian college admissions professionals. No direct application of professional (cosmopolitan-local) orientation to the admissions profession could be found in the literature. As a result, the primary purpose of this study was to examine both the level of job satisfaction and the cosmopolitan-local orientation of Christian college admissions professionals, and to determine if …

The Relationship Between Homicidal Fantasies And Dangerousness, James C. Peterson Aug 1999

The Relationship Between Homicidal Fantasies And Dangerousness, James C. Peterson

All-Inclusive List of Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Aggressive behavior is a serious problem in the United States and has been studied from a variety of perspectives. Psychologists in many different settings are frequently asked to assess the risk of future dangerous behavior by individuals. Due to their important role, research into the prediction of dangerousness has dramatically increased in the past ten years. However, to date, research has offered few reliable predictors that can be used in such assessments. This exploratory study was designed to examine whether homicidal fantasies can be used to reliably discriminate between violent and non-violent individuals. Undergraduate male students (N=l42) completed a questionnaire …

Psychopathology Of Incarcerated Males And Severity Of Nicotine Withdrawal Symptoms, Karen L. Cropsey Aug 1999

Psychopathology Of Incarcerated Males And Severity Of Nicotine Withdrawal Symptoms, Karen L. Cropsey

All-Inclusive List of Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Previous research has demonstrated the link between depression and severity of nicotine withdrawal symptoms. This study investigated depression and other psychopathology as predictors of severity of nicotine withdrawal symptoms among incarcerated males forced to quit smoking due to prison policy. Four hundred and ninety current Smokers, Ex-Smokers, and Non-Smokers completed a baseline questionnaire one week prior to smoking cessation. Three hundred and sixty-nine participants completed the second follow-up questionnaire four days after cessation, an attrition rate of 24. 7%. Two hundred and fifty-six participants completed the final follow-up assessment one month after implementation of the smoking ban, an overall attrition …

An Analysis Of Paul Knitter's Correlational, Globally Responsible Model For Interfaith Dialogue :With Implications For Constructive Interaction Between Christians And Non-Christians, Dyron B. Daughrity Aug 1999

An Analysis Of Paul Knitter's Correlational, Globally Responsible Model For Interfaith Dialogue :With Implications For Constructive Interaction Between Christians And Non-Christians, Dyron B. Daughrity

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This monograph considers how people of different belief systems can interact in a productive way. Historically, Christians have displayed several models for encountering and coping with other religions. In an increasingly pluralistic context, Paul Knitter's "Correlational, Globally Responsible Model" for dialogue is a viable option. I attempt to demonstrate that Knitter's model is a valuable and constructive way to take the "religious Other" as seriously as one's own belief system.

Federal Highway Spending And Economic Growth In Appalachia, James Herbert Noonan Aug 1999

Federal Highway Spending And Economic Growth In Appalachia, James Herbert Noonan

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Appalachia has always struggled economically due to three main factors: absentee ownership, isolation, and stereotyping. In 1965, Congress created the Appalachian Regional Commission with the mission of providing economic development programs to increase development in the region. Federal highway spending was seen as a key to improving the Appalachian infrastructure.;Today, the debate continues on the effectiveness of federal highway spending in Appalachia. The purpose of this study is to examine the effects of federal highway spending on socioeconomic status in Appalachia by analyzing the effects of spending during an economic recovery from 1983--89 and recession 1989--92. Three constructs determine increases …

Predicting Community Satisfaction Among Rural Residents: An Integrative Model, Rebecca Filkins, John C. Allen, Sam Cordes Jul 1999

Predicting Community Satisfaction Among Rural Residents: An Integrative Model, Rebecca Filkins, John C. Allen, Sam Cordes

Publications from the Center for Applied Rural Innovation (CARI)

Community satisfaction has often been linked to the level of satisfaction with a community’s infrastructure, job opportunities and social support networks. Yet, most empirical analyses of community satisfaction have focused on only one aspect of the available theory to predict community satisfaction. In this paper, we integrate multiple models to analyze community satisfaction of almost 4,000 rural Nebraskans. The integrated model indicates that social ties may have a greater role in predicting community satisfaction than had been previously thought.

Seeking Causal Explanations In Social Epidemiology, Jay S. Kaufman, Richard S. Cooper Jul 1999

Seeking Causal Explanations In Social Epidemiology, Jay S. Kaufman, Richard S. Cooper

Faculty Publications

Social factors are associated with a wide variety of health outcomes. Social epidemiology has successfully used the traditional methods of surveillance and description to establish consistent relations between social factors and health status. Epidemiology as an etiologic science, however, has been largely ineffective in moving toward causal explanations for these observed patterns. Using the counterfactual approach to causal inference, the authors describe several fundamental problems that often arise when researchers seek to infer explanatory mechanisms from data on social factors. Contrasts that form standard causal effect estimates require implicit unobserved (counterfactual) quantities, because observational data provide only one exposure state …

Monica Viega describes what went on in her classroom earlier in the school year as "Jerry Springer fights." Displays of anger and incivility among the 5th graders sometimes grew so intense that furniture would get tossed across the room. But the scene in Ms. Viega's classroom no longer resembles a raucous daytime talk show. Every morning, her Blalock Elementary School students sit in a circle and discuss how they treat one another. They talk about what they see on the television news and about keeping drugs and violence out of their neighborhoods. "This amazes me," Ms. Viega, a first-year teacher, …

Dispositions Of Dwi Arrestees: Anchorage, 1996, Robert H. Langworthy, Peter Crum

Reports

This study explores the dispositions of subjects arrested in Anchorage, Alaska during 1996 for driving while intoxicated (DWI). The project was designed to describe the Anchorage criminal justice system’s processing of DWI offenders and to isolate legal and extralegal variables that predict various offender dispositions. This report presents a literature review of studies relating to legal and extra-legal factors affecting court processing of offenders; discusses methodologies of the present study; presents flow charts of DWI arrestee processing in Anchorage; and presents the multivariate analysis that isolates significant correlates of DWI arrest disposition.

VCU Today, the University’s first official administrative organ, began as a somewhat irregular monthly publication but moved to a bi-weekly newspaper format in the 1980s. The newspaper changed its name to VCU Voice in 1988 and ten years later it appeared under the title UniverCity News. As it neared the end of its run as a physical newspaper, the publication became simply VCU News. These four publications were essentially the same periodical published under different titles by the Office of University Relations. VCU News appeared online for the first time in 2002.
