The Routines And Rituals Of A Design And Technology Classroom: An Ethnographic Study, Shaun Wellbourne-Wood Jan 1999

The Routines And Rituals Of A Design And Technology Classroom: An Ethnographic Study, Shaun Wellbourne-Wood

Theses : Honours

This research examines questions and issues raised from an ethnographic study of a secondary design and technology classroom. A critical ethnographic methodology was employed to explore the 'way of life' in design and technology and examine how aspects of this micro-culture impact on teaching and learning. This ethnographic account includes description and discussion of four significant aspects of design and technology culture. The first examines the predominant masculine culture within this classroom and the subject area at large. The second is the story of four girls and their perceived alienation and exclusion from the dominance of "a boy subject". Third …

Review Of Satanta: The Life And Death Of A War Chief. By Charles M. Robinson Iii, Benjamin R. Kracht Jan 1999

Review Of Satanta: The Life And Death Of A War Chief. By Charles M. Robinson Iii, Benjamin R. Kracht

Great Plains Quarterly (through 2013)

Set-t' ainte, or "White Bear," whose name was Anglicized into Satanta, was one of the most feared Southern Plains warriors and raiders in the mid-nineteenth century. Robinson's biography of Satanta also remembered as the "Orator of the Plains"-grew out of the author's research into the history of Fort Richardson and the May 1871 killing of seven teamsters outside the nearby town of Jacksboro, Texas. White Bear and Big Tree, the two Kiowa warriors held responsible for the teamsters' deaths, were the first American Indian leaders to be tried in a civil court (State of Texas v. Satanta and Big …

Community Dreaming In The Rural Northwest The Montana Study, 1944-47, Philip J. Nelson Jan 1999

Community Dreaming In The Rural Northwest The Montana Study, 1944-47, Philip J. Nelson

Great Plains Quarterly (through 2013)

On 28 April 1944, three intellectuals, each representing the views of different regions of the country, met in Chicago and laid the basis for an experimental program in adult education and community outreach. Ernest Melby, the newly appointed chancellor of the University of Montana system of higher education, Baker Brownell, a respected Northwestern University philosophy professor and leading advocate of the small community, and David Stevens, head of the Humanities Division of the Rockefeller Foundation agreed on the shape of a community action project that would later be called the Montana Study. They brought together the concerns and needs of …

Review Of Mexican Americans In The 1990s: Politics, Policies, And Perceptions, Ed. Juan Garcia, Ed A. Muñoz

Great Plains Quarterly (through 2013)

In Mexican Americans in the 1990s, Juan Garda assembles a fine collection of essays addressing the tremendous diversity and fluidity of the Latino/Chicano/Mexican American political experience in contemporary US society. More importantly, the contributors' admirable analyses and interpretations of Latino/Chicano/Mexican American identity, culture, and politics in the thirty-year wake of the Chicano Movement provide a refreshing alternative to those who view the decline of strict cultural nationalism and oppositional politics as detrimental to Chicano self-determination and community empowerment.

Review Of Oil, Wheat, And Wobblies: The Industrial Workers Of The World In Oklahoma, 1905-1930 By Nigel Anthony Sellars, Salvatore Salerno Jan 1999

Review Of Oil, Wheat, And Wobblies: The Industrial Workers Of The World In Oklahoma, 1905-1930 By Nigel Anthony Sellars, Salvatore Salerno

Great Plains Quarterly (through 2013)

The strength of Sellars's work is that it draws attention to the activities of the IWW at a local level during the least understood period of its history. This is particularly true of the book's focus on the A WOo A pioneer in the development of some of the IWW's most important strategies during this period, the A WO has received little previous attention. While Sellars illuminates the local, his work runs into trouble in its treatment of larger struggles within the IWW, the relative importance of the IWW's industrial unions, and the movement's culture. For example, although the book …

The Decline Of The Socratic Method At Harvard, Orin S. Kerr Jan 1999

The Decline Of The Socratic Method At Harvard, Orin S. Kerr

Nebraska Law Review

The Socratic method has long been considered a defining element of American legal education. Among both lawyers and laypersons, Socratic questioning is perceived as a rite of passage that all law students endure in their first year of law school. However, the traditional Socratic method is today more myth than reality because legal pedagogy has changed dramatically, and the Socratic method still common during the 1950s and 1960s is nearly extinct. The purpose of this paper is to explore this revolution by examining the teaching styles, attitudes, and classroom influences of the faculty at one leading law school. Section II …

Why Isn't This Man Smiling?, John W. Weaver

Seattle University Law Review

The books reviewed in this article represent five of the seventeen property casebooks in general circulation. These nine reviews of five books also demonstrate one of the continuing tensions for Property teachers. Property teachers not only face the usual problem of coverage versus depth (exacerbated by the cut in hours), but we also have the problem that Gertrude Stein posed for Oakland-that it sometimes seems as if there is no there.

Depression: Illness, Insight, And Identity, Mike W. Martin Jan 1999

Depression: Illness, Insight, And Identity, Mike W. Martin

Philosophy Faculty Articles and Research

Depression needs to be understood within interdisciplinary scientific, biopsychosocial, therapeutic frameworks, but it also has a moral dimension. The tendency to oppose moral and therapeutic perspectives, as well as to replace moral outlooks with mental-health outlooks, handicaps thinking about depression and many other topics. John Stuart Mill's midlife crisis illustrates how an experience of depression can be both a sickness and a source of moral insight. Furthermore, therapy has a moral dimension, and conversely a humane outlook is interwoven with health-oriented approaches and avoids excessive blaming and guilt. Complicating matters, depression sometimes undermines moral autonomy, and there is a continuum …

Researching Labor Arbitration And Alternative Dispute Resolution In Employment, Suzanne Thorpe, Laura J. Cooper Jan 1999

Researching Labor Arbitration And Alternative Dispute Resolution In Employment, Suzanne Thorpe, Laura J. Cooper

Articles

What kinds of information can we expect to find when doing research in alternative dispute resolution? To the extent that ordinary issues of law arise when considering methods of alternative dispute resolution, such as whether an agreement to arbitrate is judicially enforceable or whether communications in the course of mediation enjoy an evidentiary privilege, ordinary sources of legal research remain appropriate. This research guide generally does not describe those research

Gender In The Construction Of The Lawyer’S Persona (Review Essay), Susan Carle Jan 1999

Gender In The Construction Of The Lawyer’S Persona (Review Essay), Susan Carle

Feminist Scholarship

INTRODUCTION The overarching question motivating this Review Essay is whether- and, if so, in what ways-we should understand lawyering roles to be gendered. I examine this question by reviewing Kathryn Kish Sklar's recent biography of Florence Kelley, an early "public interest" lawyer and social activist whom Felix Frankfurter described as the woman who had "the largest single share in shaping the social history of the United States during the first thirty years of this century." Sklar's meticulous research provides us with new information about a dimension of Kelley's life that is overshadowed by Kelley's public persona as a social reformer …

Case Finding And Case Management Of Chlamydia And Gonorrhea Infections Among Women: What We Do And Do Not Know, Nicole Haberland, Beverly Winikoff, Nancy L. Sloan, Christiana Coggins, Christopher J. Elias

Reproductive Health

As the world grapples with the HIV pandemic, the implementation of the agenda determined by the International Conference on Population and Development (1994) at Cairo, and the matter of providing health services of adequate quality in an ethical, gender-sensitive manner, new questions are arising about how to attend to reproductive tract infections, including sexually transmitted infections (STIs), among women. This paper reviews the results of validation studies of syndromic algorithms, other nonlaboratory clinically based tools, and risk scoring for finding women infected with chlamydia and gonorrhea, particularly among those attending family planning and antenatal clinics in developing countries. The results …
