Leveling The Playing Field For Religious "Liberty" In Russia:, Afina Lekhel Jan 1999

Leveling The Playing Field For Religious "Liberty" In Russia:, Afina Lekhel

Vanderbilt Journal of Transnational Law

The purpose of this Note is to present a more comprehensive framework for analyzing the status of religious human rights in Russia after the enactment of the new law. Following the insights of an eminent scholar on law and religion, Prof. Harold J. Berman, the topic may be evaluated with a view to positive law (Zakon), moral theory (Pravo), and Russian historical experiences. Generally, positive law refers to domestic legal norms. Moral theory also stems primarily from domestic supra-legal sources, but it may connote global human rights principles where a state subscribes to monism, as Russia currently does. Historical contingencies …

Leadership 'N' Cultural Anthropoloty : A Course Outline, Gabriel D. Soll Jan 1999

Leadership 'N' Cultural Anthropoloty : A Course Outline, Gabriel D. Soll

Honors Theses

In turning Twain's kaleidoscope and looking through the light of the social sciences a new combination of colored glass comes into view. The overlap of the glasses, which are the study of leadership and the study of culture, shines through as a vibrant combination of older ideas in a new configuration. It is the vision of this new mosaic, and the belief that the academic world provides one of the best ways not only to explore, but to disseminate new ideas that I have decided to undertake the creation of a course designed for any student interested in either field. …

Washing Feet : A Revolutionary Principle Of Leadership, Josh Hayden Jan 1999

Washing Feet : A Revolutionary Principle Of Leadership, Josh Hayden

Honors Theses

The teachings of Jesus were a leadership paradox. He said that to live one must die; to be first one must be last, to move up, one must move down, and to become rich, one must become poor. If we look at people, problems, situations and life itself through the eyes of this astounding Galilean carpenter, there are unlimited things we can learn about leadership. In the process, we also learn about ourselves, our motivations, our weaknesses and strengths, and our ability or inability to command a following that will have a lasting impact. Each of these areas are critical …

Nichiren’S Risshō Ankoku Ron And Canon Formation, William E. Deal Jan 1999

Nichiren’S Risshō Ankoku Ron And Canon Formation, William E. Deal

Faculty Scholarship

Regardless of his own stated purpose or expected outcome for the Risshõ ankoku ron, one of Nichiren’s accomplishments in writing this treatise was the articulation of a canon, that is, a list of texts that were deemed true and authoritative from his perspective, as distinguished from other writings that were not. This essay explores the process of canon formation in Nichiren Buddhism, focusing on the structure and argument of the Risshõ ankoku ron. Noting five notions present in the process of canon formation, namely, selectivity, hierarchy, closure, orthodoxy, and legitimation, it examines the particular way these elements are manifest in …

The Meaning Of Religious Belief, Practice, And Community For Latter-Day Saint Fathers Of Children With Special Needs, Loren Dean Marks Jan 1999

The Meaning Of Religious Belief, Practice, And Community For Latter-Day Saint Fathers Of Children With Special Needs, Loren Dean Marks

Theses and Dissertations

While the tragedy of American fatherlessness has evoked a growing body of research, religious beliefs, practices, and communities have not been a significant part of the scholarly discussion. This article discusses possible reasons for this and reviews the religion and family literature with a focus on fathers. Qualitative interviews were conducted with 19 Latter-day Saint (LDS) fathers of children with special needs and analyzed to examine the meaning of religious experience for these fathers and their families. Analysis indicated three dimensions of religious experience: spiritual belief, religious practice, and faith community. The spiritual belief in an eternal perspective, including the …

Historical Epistemology, Jesus’ Resurrection, And The Shroud Of Turin, Gary R. Habermas Jan 1999

Historical Epistemology, Jesus’ Resurrection, And The Shroud Of Turin, Gary R. Habermas

Liberty Baptist Theological Seminary (1973-2015)

In contemporary studies on the Shroud of Turin, much attention, with good reason, has focused on the crucial roles contributed by sciences like physics, chemistry, and medical analyses. Doubtless, these and related inquiries have contributed more than any others in attempting to solve one of the greatest modern puzzles.

Here we will examine another avenue that is seldom pursued, but which offers some crucial insights for this subject: philosophy of history and its cognate, historical investigation. We will argue that well known principles in these disciplines can also assist us in arriving at some significant distinctions that are centrally relevant …

Musing The Garden: A Poetics Of Place And Emplacement., Scott Parker Smiley Jan 1999

Musing The Garden: A Poetics Of Place And Emplacement., Scott Parker Smiley

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

A walk through a garden is an immersion into a wealth of sensory and relational experiences of place. Plant varieties, color, texture, flowers, forms, pathways, light, benches, ornaments, and other experiential qualities of place work upon one's consciousness to draw one into intimate contact with the place "Emplacement" is this intimate, immersed engagement with a place, a process and state of being that erodes the boundaries we so often erect between self and environment. Traditional systematic forms of inquiry, based upon the Cartesian idea of an essential separation between object and subject, are not applicable to the study of emplacement …

"Deo, Non Fortuna": Christian, Time, And Technology, David J. Hawkin Jan 1999

"Deo, Non Fortuna": Christian, Time, And Technology, David J. Hawkin

Journal of Hindu-Christian Studies

It is commonly asserted that Christianity is the historical religion par excellence. Its view of time is frequently contrasted with that of Eastern philosophies and religions. It is said to have a "realist" and a "positive" view of time, while religions such as Hinduism are said to have a "pessimistic" view of time in which temporal existence is seen to be mere illusion. These generalizations are often schematized into analogies about "linear" time and "cyclical" time and influential conclusions about Easter and Western culture are often drawn from such contrasts. One very prevalent argument which emerges from such discourse is …

Gustavo Gutierrez's Understanding Of The Kingdom Of God In The Light Of The Second Vatican Council, Victor Figueroa-Villarreal Jan 1999

Gustavo Gutierrez's Understanding Of The Kingdom Of God In The Light Of The Second Vatican Council, Victor Figueroa-Villarreal

Dissertations

The proclamation of the Kingdom of God has been reformulated in every age and interpreted accordingly with regard to time and place. Traditionally within Roman Catholicism the Kingdom of God was identified with the church. This view produced a triumphalist attitude within the Roman Catholic Church. The Second Vatican Council brought a new attitude of openness toward the modern world, and with it the council opened the door for Roman Catholic liberation theologians to look for new ways to find what they regarded as the just solutions to the problems of Latin America.

The purpose of this research is to …

The Impact Of Religiosity On Coping Among Lds Adolescents, Matthew P. Roper Jan 1999

The Impact Of Religiosity On Coping Among Lds Adolescents, Matthew P. Roper

Theses and Dissertations

This study examines the impact of religiosity on coping in a group of Mormon (Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints) youth. Longitudinal data were gathered from detailed questionnaires administered to 2852 male and female adolescents in 1990 and 1993. Coping was conceptualized as four general dimensions (self-concept, public activities and service, deviance and future plans). Religiosity was also conceptualized multi-dimensionally (religious belief, public religiosity, private religious behavior, and religious experiences). Multiple regression analysis was used to investigate the unique effects of each of the dimensions of religiosity on each dimension of coping. It was hypothesized that religiosity was positively …

More Precious Than Gold: The Journey To And Through Zion In 1849-50, Fred E. Woods Jan 1999

More Precious Than Gold: The Journey To And Through Zion In 1849-50, Fred E. Woods

Faculty Publications

The California gold rush, the first international gold rush in history, turned the world upside down, reaching its zenith in the years 1849-50. As a result of the rush during these two climactic years, the population swelled our nation's Pacific coast, entitling California to receive statehood in the fall of 1850. During these catalytic years, Latter-day Saints were journeying to the American West for a different kind of treasure. They gathered from afar to their Mormon mecca nestled in the Salt Lake Valley to fulfill their dreams of establishing Zion. Yet the California gold rush had a significant impact on …

Negotiating Cultural Boundaries: Confucianism And Trans/National Identity In Korea, William A. Callahan Jan 1999

Negotiating Cultural Boundaries: Confucianism And Trans/National Identity In Korea, William A. Callahan

Research Collection School of Social Sciences

This essay looks to the complex intercultural relations of China and Korea to highlight two important issues in political theory and international relations: the transnational nature of world politics and the limits of analytical binaries such as East‐West and tradition‐modernity. Discussions of international politics in East Asia characteristically address issues of security and development studies. More recently, Confucianism has been mobilized as part of the clash of civilizations of Asia with the West. This essay will consider how cultural boundaries are negotiated within the region via an analysis of the workings of the transnational discourse of Confucianism in the construction …

Introduction: Re-Mapping Anglo-Jewish Literature History, Cynthia Scheinberg Jan 1999

Introduction: Re-Mapping Anglo-Jewish Literature History, Cynthia Scheinberg

Arts & Sciences Faculty Publications

THE ESSAYS COLLECTED in this issue of Victorian Literature and Culture seek to introduce Victorianists to some of the many Anglo-Jewish writers of nineteenth-century England. What differentiates this moment in Anglo-Jewish scholarship from most previous considerations is that we do not purport to fill a falsely constructed “void” of Anglo-Jewish literary silence; on the contrary, this collection seeks to amplify the fullness of nineteenth century Anglo-Jewish literary life. In 1846, Grace Aguilar, the important Anglo-Jewish writer and theologian, called out for the production of a “Jewish literature” that would aid the “right reverence[e] of Judaism,” and “advance” the Jewish people …

Active Imagination And Christian Religious Experience: A Study In Relationship, George E. Trippe Jan 1999

Active Imagination And Christian Religious Experience: A Study In Relationship, George E. Trippe

Theses: Doctorates and Masters

The focus of this study is the relationship between Carl Jung's practice of active imagination and Christian religious experience. The research is qualitative, using the heuristic research method as developed by Clark Moustakas. The experience of active imagination is defined and the practice is explained. Consideration is given to its values and benefits. In the heuristic style, the research focusses on the active imagination work of the researcher and four research participants. The active imagination case material of the five participants is summarised and depictions of their material are included which identify the nature, essence, and meaning of their experiences. …
