Assimilation In The Name Of Pluralism: Education, Law And Religion In Ontario, Canada, Ken Badley
Assimilation In The Name Of Pluralism: Education, Law And Religion In Ontario, Canada, Ken Badley
Faculty Publications - College of Education
Draw a Venn diagram with three circles, one called law, one called religion and one called education. This chapter explores the overlap among these. The frrst half involves two clusters of questions. First, it asks what the questions, in fact, are, dealing first with issues concerning religion in publicly-funded schools. A second cluster of questions concerns those flashpoint issues of curriculum identified by religious parents and the independent religious schools some of them choose for their children. Throughout the chapter, I make reference to recent court cases involving religion and education in the Canadian province of Ontario, usually following those …

Review Of Seeing The White Buffalo By Robert B. Pickering, Lee Irwin
Review Of Seeing The White Buffalo By Robert B. Pickering, Lee Irwin
Great Plains Quarterly (through 2013)
For those unfamiliar with the White Buffalo and its relationship with Native American spirituality, this is the book to read. The author, curator of anthropology for the Denver Museum of Natural History, has written an accessible, informative guide that surveys the popular response to Miracle, the female white buffalo calf born in 1994. Pickering covers four areas: first, the personal perspectives of Dave and Val Heider, the Janesville, Minnesota, couple who run a small buffalo herd in which Miracle was born; then the "historical-cultural perspectives of American Indians"; the "spiritual perspectives" of Native and non-Native peoples toward Miracle; and the …

Religious Attitudes Toward Cloning: A Tale Of Two Creatures, Dena S. Davis
Religious Attitudes Toward Cloning: A Tale Of Two Creatures, Dena S. Davis
Law Faculty Articles and Essays
This Essay offers one analytic structure with which to approach the study of religious responses to cloning and suggests that, whereas the negative reactions are tied to a Frankenstein approach--that is, one which uses all the horror of that myth to express our fears about humans getting into the creation business--the more positive reactions express what I will call the Golem approach, based on a lesser-known legend.

Journal Articles
This book not only represents the culmination of Michael J. Perry’s thoughtful and important deliberation (two other books and numerous articles) on the proper relation of morality (especially religious morality) to politics and law, but it also presents arguments that are very accessible to those in religious studies, philosophy, political science, and law.

Effects Of Religiosity And Problem Type On Counselor Description Ratings: An Alternative Population Study To Guinee And Tracey, Victor W. Landers
Theses
This analogue study reexamines the work of Guinee and Tracey ( 1997), repeating the interaction between pre-counseling information, religiosity, and problem type and its subsequent effect on counselor ratings of social influence and willingness to seek help. The author assessed members of a large rural county in the Mid-west using an inventory of Christian beliefs. After providing a presenting problem and reading self-descriptions of secular (nonreligious), spiritually empathic, or Christian counselors, participants responded to the Counselor Rating Form-Short and Willingness to Seek Help scale. Based on a paired sample t test, the interactions between participant religiosity and counselor description is …
Service-Learning And School Curriculum, Amy Yip Ah-May
Service-Learning And School Curriculum, Amy Yip Ah-May
Special Topics, General
Service-Learning extends the learning process from the classroom to the community, which becomes a supplementary resource to facilitate teaching and learning. This paper uses fragments of reflections to illustrate how Service-Learning course participants learn through the community-service projects and how they feel about their experiences as project leaders. The literature used provides a rich source of data about the meaning of Service-Learning and empirical evidences of the educational effects of learning through serving others. This paper argues that the Hong Kong school curriculum is examination driven and focused on the academic. There is a neglect in the social, moral and …
