Comparison Of Imaging Geometries For Diffuse Optical Tomography Of Tissue, Brian W. Pogue, Troy O. Mcbride, Ulf L. Osterberg, Keith D. Paulsen Jan 1999

Comparison Of Imaging Geometries For Diffuse Optical Tomography Of Tissue, Brian W. Pogue, Troy O. Mcbride, Ulf L. Osterberg, Keith D. Paulsen

Dartmouth Scholarship

Images produced in six different geometries with diffuse optical tomography simulations of tissue have been compared using a finite element-based algorithm with iterative refinement provided by the NewtonRaphson approach. The source-detector arrangements studied include (i) fan-beam tomography, (ii) full reflectance and transmittance tomography, as well as (iii) sub-surface imaging, where each of these three were examined in a circular and a flat slab geometry. The algorithm can provide quantitatively accurate results for all of the tomographic geometries investigated under certain circumstances. For example, quantitatively accurate results occur with sub-surface imaging only when the object to be imaged is fully contained …

Signifying Nothing?: Martin Ritt's The Sound And The Fury (1959) As Deconstructive Adaptation, Walter C. Metz

Publications

This essay defends Martin Ritt's film version of The Sound and the Fury (1959), starring Yul Brynner as a Cajun Jason Compson, traditionally positioned as one of the most ill-conceived film adaptations ever made, by highlighting how an academic modernist reading of the works of William Faulkner overwrites the intriguing possibilities of melodrama.

New Polyether Toxins From Shellfish And Marine Phytoplankton: Isolation Studies And Development Of Analytical Methods, Alan G. Bishop Jan 1999

New Polyether Toxins From Shellfish And Marine Phytoplankton: Isolation Studies And Development Of Analytical Methods, Alan G. Bishop

Theses

There are three classes of polyether toxins responsible for Diarrhetic Shellfish Poisoning (DSP) world-wide. The causative toxins are okadaic acid (OA) and derivatives (DTXs), pectenotoxins (PTXs) and yessotoxins (YTXs). The origin of these toxins are phytoplankton from Dinophysis or Prorocentrum spp. OA has been demonstrated for most outbreaks in Europe and more recently a new isomer DTX-2 has been reported in Ireland.

Marine phytoplankton biomass samples consisting predominantly of Dinophysis acuta, were acquired using a large double plankton net from waters off the South-west coast of Ireland. Analysis of unialgal samples using high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) with fluorescence and …

Computer Based Methodologies For On-Line Scanning Force Microscopic Detection Of Immunological Binding Events, Patrick Joseph O'Mahony Jan 1999

Computer Based Methodologies For On-Line Scanning Force Microscopic Detection Of Immunological Binding Events, Patrick Joseph O'Mahony

Theses

The overall aim of this work was to develop computer based methodologies for the on-line scanning force microscopic detection of immunological binding events. To achieve this aim it was necessary to develop a rapid, high-resolution data acquisition system to digitise scanning force microscope (SFM) data on-line and then to develop an effective method for extracting the scanner induced background curvature from this data to reveal the nanoscale height binding events. Four techniques were investigated in terms of operational speed and performance accuracy; namely, polynomial interpolation; least squares approximation; real-time recursive least squares approximation; and wavelet approximation.

It was found that …

Framers' Intent And Military Power: Has Supreme Court Deference To The Military Gone Too Far?, Kalyani Robbins Jan 1999

Framers' Intent And Military Power: Has Supreme Court Deference To The Military Gone Too Far?, Kalyani Robbins

Akron Law Faculty Publications

One of the sources of the Court's inability to conduct proper constitutional analysis in military cases is its lack of access to complete and unbiased information upon which to base that analysis. In Part III, I will make an effort to suggest methods for addressing this problem alternative to simply letting the military use its special knowledge as a source of power over the Court. Part IV will demonstrate a modern example of where the problem of excessive deference can lead, and present the Court with a suggestion to use this as a context for change. Finally, the Article will …

The Relationship Between Percent Deficit Ideal Body Weight And The Prevalence, Severity, And Healing Of Pressure Ulcers, Cheryl Anne Masters Jan 1999

The Relationship Between Percent Deficit Ideal Body Weight And The Prevalence, Severity, And Healing Of Pressure Ulcers, Cheryl Anne Masters

UNF Graduate Theses and Dissertations

This retrospective study determined whether percent deficit ideal body weight (IBW) was a risk factor for the prevalence, severity or healing of pressure ulcers. This study hypothesized that nursing home residents below their IBW with pressure ulcers have more severe, higher prevalence, and a slower healing rate than resident who are above their IBW. Medical record data were analyzed for all subjects that met the selection criteria from April, 1997 to April, 1998. Fifty-eight subjects aged 39 to 104 years were assigned to one of two groups (Group 1(n=28) were less than 99% of IBW; Group 2 (n=30) were greater …

The Effect Of Peripheral Neuropathy On Balance Performance In Community-Dwelling Adults With Type I Diabetes Mellitus, Laura Eckel Jan 1999

The Effect Of Peripheral Neuropathy On Balance Performance In Community-Dwelling Adults With Type I Diabetes Mellitus, Laura Eckel

Physical Therapy Scholarly Projects

Purpose: Balance is affected by visual, somatosensory, proprioceptive, and vestibular input. Anything that alters one of these elements could potentially cause a decrease in postural stability. One disease which reduces the somatosensory input from the foot and ankles is diabetic neuropathy. The purpose of this study is to determine the correlation between Type I DM and balance performance, thereby adding to the current knowledge of postural control and the impact, if any, DM has on balance.

Methods: Twenty-five volunteer subjects with Type I DM and 25 age-matched control subjects participated in the study. Semmes-Weinstein monofilaments were used to determine plantar …

Plantar Fasciitis: Etiology And Treatment, Scott Ackman Jan 1999

Plantar Fasciitis: Etiology And Treatment, Scott Ackman

Physical Therapy Scholarly Projects

Plantar fasciitis is a common cause of inferior heel pain in athletes and non-athletes. The diagnosis for plantar fasciitis is relatively simple due to the distinct nature of the subjective findings. Despite the simplicity of the diagnosis, a thorough history and objective evaluation are essential in order to identify possible etiological factors. The etiology of plantar fasciitis is multifactorial with no one factor present in all cases. Many treatment methods for plantar fasciitis are currently practiced. It is important to note no one treatment method was found to be successful in all cases of plantar fasciitis. In general, research supported …

The model for this family support network would include a process of matching experienced or "veteran" parents or a family member who has a child with a disability with parents or other family members who are just beginning to meet the challenge of a disability within the family.

The research was designed to determine priorities of families with children with disabilities as well as effective methods of recruitment, referral, and training. Furthermore, the research identified agencies and programs …

Etiology And Treatment Of Rotator Cuff Injuries In Baseball Pitchers, Jeff Breyen Jan 1999

Etiology And Treatment Of Rotator Cuff Injuries In Baseball Pitchers, Jeff Breyen

Physical Therapy Scholarly Projects

Rotator cuff injury is one of the most common shoulder problems seen in the baseball pitchers today. The rotator cuff is the primary dynamic stabilizer of the glenohumeral joint and is placed under significant stress during each pitch the player delivers to the plate. Rotator cuff injury and dysfunction in the baseball pitcher may be classified based on etiology as primary impingement, primary tensile overload, instability, and macrotrauma.

The shoulder is a complex joint and proper treatment relies on the physical therapist's knowledge of the anatomy and function of all of the involved structures about the shoulder. The therapist must …
