Tau Beta Pi Engineering Mentorship Program, Tyler Black
Tau Beta Pi Engineering Mentorship Program, Tyler Black
Undergraduate Honors Capstone Projects
The purpose of this project is to design and implement a student-led engineering mentorship program directed by the members of the Utah Gamma Chapter of Tau Beta Pi on the Utah State University (USU) Logan campus. Retention data show that many undergraduate students who start engineering programs change their degree before graduation due to academic and social challenges that may be mitigated by the support of a peer mentor. The Tau Beta Pi Engineering Mentorship Program selects and trains upperclassman mentors to effectively mentor underclassman engineering students.
The design of the mentorship program is an application of backward design, where …
A Look Through The Bluest Eye: Intersectionality, Identity & The Role Of Fiction, Sydney Foster
A Look Through The Bluest Eye: Intersectionality, Identity & The Role Of Fiction, Sydney Foster
Undergraduate Honors Capstone Projects
Since its coinage in 1989, the idea of intersectionality has persisted academic research in understanding how a person is treated and what experiences they are subjected to, specifically those belonging to marginalized groups. My theory is that a person’s intersectionality is the vehicle which leads to their experiences, which when totaled, comprise a person’s identity. This project focuses specifically on the treatment of Black women and girls, the academic research and first-hand accounts that support the existence of the perpetual adultification, dehumanization, and sexualization of these individuals, and how these phenomena increase Black women and girls’ risk for maltreatment, specifically …

By utilizing a mixed-methods research design, this study collected …
Nutrition Teaching Methods In Communities, Emery Fayth Rowles
Nutrition Teaching Methods In Communities, Emery Fayth Rowles
Undergraduate Honors Capstone Projects
Community is a vital part of non-formal education. A sense of, longing for, and responsibility towards community draws individuals to participate in local services and classes. Community has been shown to have positive impacts on learning, self efficacy, and health.
Many of the techniques used in education mirror techniques used in building community—such as the use of small group discussions and cultural sensitivity—but with distinct differences in mindset. Most educational approaches see the acquisition and use of knowledge as the key purpose of the program and evaluate participants on an individual basis. This approach makes sense for programs meant to …

Murdoch's Metaphorical And Mystical Moral Metaphysics, William Jade Langley
Murdoch's Metaphorical And Mystical Moral Metaphysics, William Jade Langley
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
In this project, I explain the mysticism found in Iris Murdoch’s The Sovereignty of Good, emphasizing what the illustrative thought experiments and metaphors are meant to explain. To do this, I introduce her understanding of G. E Moore’s moral realism and compare this with how Bertrand Russell understands mystical intuition and revelation. Then, to understand how we can still do moral philosophy when morality is fundamentally mystical, I compare Murdoch’s usage of metaphor with that of Victoria Welby, who also takes metaphorical understanding to be crucial to our understanding of the world. Though Welby goes further than Murdoch in saying …
Media Framing Of Peace And Justice In Post Conflict Societies: Rwanda And Colombia In Focus, Ahmer Anwar Khan
Media Framing Of Peace And Justice In Post Conflict Societies: Rwanda And Colombia In Focus, Ahmer Anwar Khan
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
This study investigates how traditional journalism frames peace and justice in post-conflict societies, using Rwanda and Colombia as comparative case studies. It explores the role of media in shaping public discourse around transitional justice, reconciliation, and national healing. The findings indicate that Rwanda’s media adopted a justice-first framing, emphasizing accountability and moral restoration through mechanisms such as the International Criminal Tribunal for Rwanda (ICTR) and the Gacaca courts. In contrast, Colombian journalism during the 2012–2016 peace negotiations with the FARC guerrilla group prioritized peace-first framing, portraying dialogue and reintegration as essential to ending decades of violence. These divergent approaches reflect …
Secondary English Teachers’ Perceptions Regarding The Impact, If Any, Of Shifts In The Emphasis Of History Education On Students’ Comprehension Of Literature, Bailey J. Poole
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
This qualitative study explored secondary English teachers’ perceptions of the emphasis on history education and its perceived impact on their students’ comprehension of literature. This research used an interpretivist approach and a conceptual framework shaped by schema theory and constructivism to understand whether teachers perceived a shift in the value of history education, how they described such shifts, if any, and how they responded instructionally to those shifts, if necessary.
Data was collected through six semi-structured interviews with 11th and 12th grade English Language Arts teachers from public high schools in Mississippi, each with a minimum of ten years teaching …

Rapid global acceleration in the construction of physical barriers along international borders has greatly influenced biodiversity and animal movement. Physical barriers can fragment landscapes, hinder access to essential resources, impact long-distance migrations, and inhibit dispersal and gene flow. The effects of physical barriers on animal movement and landscape connectivity can be exacerbated in dryland environments where access to water is a limiting factor. In recent decades, the construction of border barrier infrastructure has accelerated along the international boundary between the United States and Mexico. Here, we used a landscape connectivity model to investigate the effects of barriers on wildlife access …

A Survey Of Privacy-Preserving Federated Learning For Intrusion Detection Systems, Thomas Bunko, Michael N. Johnstone, Wencheng Yang, Ben A. Scott
Research outputs 2022 to 2026
Intrusion detection systems (IDS) monitor and detect malicious activity and unauthorized access that may compromise systems. Traditional IDS approaches send data to a central server for analysis, raising privacy concerns as data owners lose control over security. Federated Learning (FL) offers a privacy-preserving alternative by allowing local devices to process their data and generate models without sharing raw data. These local models are aggregated centrally to form a comprehensive model with performance comparable to centralized systems. This paper reviews FL-based IDS research, and is the first review paper to focus on privacy-preserving techniques collectively known as privacy-preserving Federated Learning (PPFL) …

Cetaceans, despite their ability to cross wide distances, enabling mostly high levels of gene flow, can develop unique genetic lineages driven by variations in life-history traits, diverse migratory routes and local adaptation, complicating taxonomy and delineation of conservation units. Comprehensive genetic data are essential to overcome the challenges of obtaining suitable sample sizes from wild cetaceans while untangling cryptic species diversity. The Bryde's whale (Balaenoptera edeni) has a complicated discovery and taxonomic history that hinders accurate conservation assessments. In southern Africa, two populations are recognised: the inshore (SAi) and the offshore southeast Atlantic population (SEA). This study examines their phylogenetic …

Accurate and reliable breast cancer detection from mammographic images remains a critical challenge due to subtle lesion appearance, high intra-class variability, and class imbalance inherent in clinical datasets. To address these issues, this study proposes Swin-BreastNet, an explainable and optimization-driven deep learning framework for binary classification of benign and malignant breast lesions from full-field digital mammograms. The proposed approach leverages the hierarchical Swin Transformer model to effectively capture fine-grained local texture patterns and long-range contextual dependencies through Shifted Window Multi-head Self-Attention (SW-MSA). A key novelty of this work lies in the integration of Harris Hawks Optimization (HHO) for automated hyperparameter …

Background: Artificial intelligence (AI) is transitioning from experimental pilots to core public health functions such as disease surveillance, resource planning, and analysis of social and structural determinants of health. Yet, health data collection and stewardship remain fragmented across the globe; some jurisdictions still rely on paper-based systems, while others operate noninteroperable digital systems that can exacerbate inequities. Treating health data as a global good therefore requires governance that enables innovation while protecting rights, safety, and trust. This study aims to develop a conceptual meso-level capability framework that translates responsible AI principles into organizational practices for public health agencies. Methods: We …

Flicking Fibres: Microfibres Act As Sensory Disruptors In A Marine Crustacean, Ari Drummond, Alexander D.M. Wilson, Lucy M. Turner, Mark Briffa
School of Biological and Marine Sciences
Anthropogenic inputs to the environment—including microplastics and microfibres—are global stressors known to impair multiple facets of organismal biology. However, the effects of these pollutants on sensory structures remain critically understudied. Sensory systems mediate organism-environment interactions, and pollution-derived impairment at these interfaces may cascade through bioprocessing, from information acquisition to behaviour and ultimately fitness. Microfibres, in particular, pose an additional threat, potentially physically obstructing sensory organs and chemically interfering with sensory processes. Using an invertebrate model of sensory biology, Pagurus bernhardus, we tested whether dryer lint—a complex, heterogeneous mix of treated microplastic and cellulose fibres, and other anthropogenic contaminants—acts as a …

Pentobarbital is a barbiturate with sedative and anticonvulsant properties, occasionally used in pediatric patients for preoperative sedation, deep sedation during mechanical ventilation, and seizure control. Despite its long-standing clinical use, age-appropriate dosing remains challenging due to variability across studies and limited pediatric pharmacokinetic (PK) data. This study (NCT01431326) aimed to characterize the population pharmacokinetics of pentobarbital in pediatric patients (birth to 21 years) and evaluate dosing strategies using model-based simulations. A two-compartment population PK model, allometrically scaled to total body weight, adequately described pentobarbital plasma concentrations, with no additional covariates identified as significant. Simulations were conducted across four age groups: …
Federalism, Fragmentation, And The Limits Of Universal Welfare In The United States: A Comparative Analysis Of Germany And Sweden, Jacqueline Arena
Federalism, Fragmentation, And The Limits Of Universal Welfare In The United States: A Comparative Analysis Of Germany And Sweden, Jacqueline Arena
Political Science
This paper examines why the United States welfare state struggles to achieve universal social protection, focusing on the role of federalism, political ideology, and public opinion. It argues that the U.S. welfare state is structurally fragmented due to the division of authority between federal and state governments, which produces uneven, inconsistent, and often inadequate access to social benefits. This fragmentation is rooted in historical developments, including New Deal era political compromises, racialized policy exclusions, and resistance from organized interest groups, which embedded decentralization and inequality into the system’s foundation. Using Gøsta Esping-Andersen’s welfare regime typology and T.H. Marshall’s concept of …

Albany City As A Case Study In Language Mapping, Storm Pupina
Albany City As A Case Study In Language Mapping, Storm Pupina
Linguistics
This thesis uses Albany, NY, as a case study in urban language mapping, following the example of many other language mapping projects, most notably the NYC Language Mapping Project. Albany's languages and linguistic features were analyzed to better understand the area's linguistic ecology and ongoing heritage-language maintenance efforts. Various types of American Census data were compared to reach the conclusions. Despite not being a major city, Albany is bustling with both new and old language communities. Similar efforts with more varied data-gathering tactics would greatly benefit other American urban landscapes.
Low-Cost Rf Exposure Monitoring With Tinyml Prediction, Sanad Sahawneh
Low-Cost Rf Exposure Monitoring With Tinyml Prediction, Sanad Sahawneh
Nanoscale Science & Engineering (discontinued with class year 2014)
The proliferation of wireless technologies has produced a dense, increasingly heterogeneous radio-frequency (RF) environment that surrounds modern life. While regulatory bodies such as the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) and the World Health Organization (WHO) maintain exposure guidelines, the tools that ordinary people, educators, and small institutions can use to actually observe RF exposure in their own spaces remain expensive, specialized, and largely confined to professional laboratories. Spectrum analyzers and calibrated field probes routinely cost between five hundred and one hundred thousand dollars per unit, placing continuous local monitoring out of reach for most environments where exposure questions are most natural …

Dissertations
Abstract
This autoethnographic study focuses on Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) among U.S. veterans and the policies and practices that impact life outcomes. The research answers the questions: (1) what insights emerge from the author’s embedded advocacy experience; (2) what systemic barriers impede veterans’ access to PTSD treatment; and (3) how does military culture shape help-seeking behavior. This research draws on the author’s multigenerational and institutional ties to military service—as descendant of a Korean-era veteran, Marine and Army servicemember, VA employee, and veteran advocate. The researcher constructs detailed autoethnographic and composite narratives of the lived experiences of service members who develop …
The Concentration Controversy, Matthew Urquiaga
The Concentration Controversy, Matthew Urquiaga
Business/Business Administration
This thesis examines how U.S. equity market concentration affects investment performance. Using CRSP data from 1999 to 2024, we construct monthly concentration measures, including the Herfindahl-Hirschman Index (HHI), the adjusted HHI, the Top 20 market share, and each month’s expanding-window concentration quintiles. We document subsequent stock returns by quintile and find weak evidence of higher stock performance in Quintile 3 conditions. A second part of the analysis uses Morningstar’s universe of actively managed U.S. equity funds to evaluate benchmark-adjusted returns (BARs) across the full equity style box. Student retention and degree completion remain central challenges for higher-education institutions, with significant implications for student success, institutional effectiveness, and public accountability. While advances in predictive analytics have enabled earlier identification of students at risk of withdrawal, many commonly used machine learning approaches suffer from limited interpretability, constraining their practical usefulness for advising, intervention, and policy decision making. This dissertation addresses the problem of predicting student persistence by developing and evaluating optimization based, interpretable classification models within the Logical Analysis of Data (LAD) framework. Building on existing LAD formulations, this research introduces two novel pattern generation models, the Best Term …
