Last semester, in Fall 1999. the author was doing research in California Reserve Book Room in Martin Luther King. Jr. Main Library' in San Jose, for one of her class projects. There she happened to read some articles about Burbank Neighborhood. One of the articles '‘Burbank residents claim adult theater causes problems" (Mercury' News Sep.29 1993), was about the Burbank area. It was an interesting article. In this article a resident is expressing her protest and anger in a unique way. Readers can see this article later in the report on page 79. The author became interested to know more …

Voluntary Mobile Source Emission Reduction Programs, Barbara Laurenson
Master's Projects
As a society we aspire to live in communities with healthy air quality. Achieving this goal is contingent upon contolling many different sources of air pollution. In the past twenty years, the largest sources of air pollution have shifted from easily targeted “smoke stack industries” to difficult to target “mobile sources, Mobile sources, which include automobiles and trucks, are difficult to control because they involve not just the technology that creates the pollution but also how individuals choose to (or are required to) use mobile sources. As a result, controlling these sources of air pollution can be a complex endeavor. …

The Educational Nature Reserve Problem: Selecting A Prairie Reserve Location For The Kalamazoo Nature Center, Theresa M. Mau-Crimmins
The Educational Nature Reserve Problem: Selecting A Prairie Reserve Location For The Kalamazoo Nature Center, Theresa M. Mau-Crimmins
Masters Theses
This study investigates a complex location-planning problem that is often faced by managers of nature centers: how to select sites on which to position new habitat reserves. Mission statements of these establishments often indicate objectives of habitat preservation and public education. Inherent in land preservation is a limited amount of traffic through the area. In contrast, in order for visitors to fully experience an ecosystem, access to the site is required.
In order to address site selection problems at such institutions, the Educational Nature Reserve Model was developed. This model fits situations in which the conflicting goals of conservation and …

In April 1995, I asked four Nebraskans from the private sector and four senior people of the University to review the administrative processes of the University of Nebraska. In the appointment letter for this Task Force, I noted that many current administrative processes need to be examined to improve quality and productivity.

Production, Processing, And Marketing Opportunities For Athens County, Ohio Farmers: Assessing Needs And Creating Solutions, Christopher D. Penrose, Penne L. Smith, Edward M. Vollborn
Journal of Extension
An instrument was developed to identify production, processing and marketing needs of farmers in Athens County, Ohio. The questionnaire was mailed to 509 families with a 24% response rate. Forty-five (37.5%) needed improved markets. The greatest area of marketing interest was cattle (24.2%), hay (14.1%) and vegetables (14.1%). Respondents also expressed interest in educational programs on grazing livestock and farm management. As a result, a retail cooperative was formed to market local products, a feeder calf pool was established, and programs and publications were developed to address additional marketing and management needs.

Linking Corporate Goals And Shop Floor Performance, Loretta Cochran
Linking Corporate Goals And Shop Floor Performance, Loretta Cochran
All Dissertations
Several different types of programs have been introduced to translate organizational goals into performance measurement and feedback systems that can be transferred to the shop floor level for employees. An overreaching assumption has been made that there must be subsets of objectives in order to motivate shop floor employees. In the field of human resources, performance management systems have been designed as vehicles for goal translation from top management to lower levels. The total quality management literature introduces hoshin planning as another formula for disseminating goals between layers within the organization.
An aggregate perspective on this linkage of performance and …

Like the air we breathe, the media permeate our society. Twenty-four hours a day news and information is available from all reaches of the earth. Because the majority of our knowledge of the world around us comes from the media, they have tremendous power over how people, places and events are perceived (Graber, 1997). Whether the story publicizes controversial issues such as same-sex marriage, or tugs at patriotic themes like flag burning, by giving air times or column inches, media imply certain values and beliefs and newsworthy. In a democratic society, media do not say what to think, but highlighting …

Service Quality In Higher Education: Expectations Versus Experiences Of Doctoral Students At State-Supported Universities In Tennessee, James H. Lampley
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The purpose of this study was to determine if a gap analysis model (SERVQUAL) of service quality measurement could be appropriately applied to higher education. The researcher asked doctoral students from six doctoral-granting, state-supported universities in Tennessee to complete a service quality survey, comparing their experiences with their expectations, thereby giving a measure of gaps in educational service quality at their institution. The research design included five research questions, with five null hypotheses testing the relationship between students' expectations and experiences, between overall satisfaction and service gaps, and between overall satisfaction and certain demographic variables (age, gender, ethnicity, type of …

Is Trade Liberalization An Important Cause Of Increasing U.S. Wage Inequality? The Interaction Of Theory And Policy, John B. Davis
Is Trade Liberalization An Important Cause Of Increasing U.S. Wage Inequality? The Interaction Of Theory And Policy, John B. Davis
Economics Faculty Research and Publications
The majority of mainstream economists believe that globalization and trade liberalization have had a minor role in increasing U.S. wage inequality. A minority argues that capital mobility and outsourcing indicate a larger effect. This paper first surveys these views, and then argues that how we understand the policy consequences of trade liberalization helps determine the character of our analysis of the issue itself. Thus, a shift in policy perspective, to consider the "equity costs" of trade liberalization in terms of eroded U.S. labor market institutions, produces a larger framework for analyzing the consequences of globalization and trade liberalization than is …

The Urban Ecology Of Hospital Failure: Hospital Closures In The City Of Chicago, 1970-1991, Gunnar Almgren, Miguel Ferguson
The Journal of Sociology & Social Welfare
Abstract: Hospital closures occurred nationally with increasing frequency between 1970 and 1990. In particular, large urban areas experienced a dramatic number of closures. Of the 61 general hospitals operating in Chicago in 1970, 22 (36%) had closed by 1991. While a growing body of literature has examined the etiology and determinants of hospital closure over the last two decades, few empirical studies have focused on the neighborhood correlates of closure, and none have examined specific health outcomes associated with hospital failure. This study uses census and Chicago hospital closure data to compare and contrast different conceptual explanations of closure in …
The Social Process Of "Passing" To Manage Stigma: Acts Of Internalized Oppression Or Acts Of Resistance?, Valli Kalei Kanuha
The Social Process Of "Passing" To Manage Stigma: Acts Of Internalized Oppression Or Acts Of Resistance?, Valli Kalei Kanuha
The Journal of Sociology & Social Welfare
In order to manage social stigma, some individuals construct and enact a social interaction strategy known as passing, which is "a performance in which one presents himself as what one is not" (Rohy, 1996). Based on interviews with lesbians and gay men of color, this article suggests that the process of passing is not based upon a rejection of stigmatized identity, but situationally employed to resist social oppression.

Protection, Prizes Or Patrons? Explaining The Origins And Maintenance Of Human Services Interest Groups, Richard Hoefer
The Journal of Sociology & Social Welfare
Little work has been done to understand the origins of human service interest groups or how they maintain themselves once founded. This paper tests three models of interest group origins and maintenance: a pluralist approach in which groups form and con tinue because they protect members' interests; a rational actor model in which groups form and are maintained because they offer members "prizes" that are more valuable than the costs of joining; and a patronage model in which groups form and continue because financial backers are willing to support them financially. Results show support for the "protection" and "patrons" models …

Perceiving Oppression: Relationships With Resilience, Self-Esteem, Depressive Symptoms, And Reliance On God In African-American Homeless Men, Jill Littrell, Elizabeth Beck
The Journal of Sociology & Social Welfare
Empowerment has been proffered as a desirable goal for many disadvantaged populations. The process of empowerment can include encouraging disadvantaged individuals to recognize the structural factors in society (e.g., discrimination, oppression, injustice) which contribute to disadvantaged status. Two studies sought to determine the impact that recognition of oppression has on a disadvantaged individual's (1) self-esteem; (2) level of depressive symptoms; (3) resilience which includes a sense of master y and optimism; (4) anger; and (5) reliance on God. These issues were investiga ted in a sample of African-American men seeking services at a soup-kitchen ministry. Perceptions of racial discrimination were …
