Information System Incidents: The Development Of A Damage Assessment Model, Mark D. Horony
Information System Incidents: The Development Of A Damage Assessment Model, Mark D. Horony
Theses and Dissertations
Information system (IS) incidents are on the rise. With low manning and undertrained information security specialists it is difficult for organizations to stop IS incidents from occurring. Once an incident has occurred it is the IS manager's responsibility to ensure that a full and accurate damage assessment has been accomplished. However, most IS managers lack the necessary tools to assess the damage from an incident. This exploratory thesis developed an IS incident damage assessment model (DAM) that can be part of the IS manager's tool kit. During the development of the model, it became apparent that the model was supported …
Evaporation Of Jet Fuels, Charles Eric Hack
Evaporation Of Jet Fuels, Charles Eric Hack
Theses and Dissertations
Determining the fate and transport of JP-8 jet fuel is a complex and important problem. As part of the startup procedures for jet engines, fuel is passed through aircraft engines before combustion is initiated. Because of the extremely low temperatures at northern tier Air Force bases, the unburned fuel does not evaporate readily and may come into contact with ground crew. To determine the amount and duration of contaminant contact, the evaporation of the emitted fuel must be modeled. The amount and composition of the fuel upon reaching the ground crew may be determined by droplet evaporation models that have …
Defining Virtual Interactions: A Taxonomy For Researchers And Practitioners, Glade G. Oxborrow
Defining Virtual Interactions: A Taxonomy For Researchers And Practitioners, Glade G. Oxborrow
Theses and Dissertations
Many uses for virtual technology are being identified by diverse organizational entities around the world. Before these technologies can be fully utilized, it is important to have a common definition and understanding of what is meant by the term virtual. It is also important to understand the structural configurations possible using virtual technology and the types of virtual interactions that may occur using these technologies. This thesis will define the basic premises, structures, and definitions applicable to vial interactions. It also defines various types of virtual interactions that may occur using virtual technology. These designations will help both practitioners and …
Approximation And Optimization Of An Auditory Model For Realization In Vlsi Hardware, Samuel L. Sangregory
Approximation And Optimization Of An Auditory Model For Realization In Vlsi Hardware, Samuel L. Sangregory
Theses and Dissertations
The Auditory Image Model (AIM) is a software tool set developed to functionally model the role of the ear in the human hearing process. AIM includes detailed filter equations for the major functional portions of the ear. Currently, AIM is run on a workstation and requires 10 to 100 times real-time to process audio information and produce an auditory image. An all-digital approximation of the AIM which is suitable for implementation in very large scale integrated circuits is presented. This document details the mathematical models of AIM and the approximations and optimizations used to simplify the filtering and signal processing …

Majority And Minority Supervisees' Perceptions Of Clinical Supervision, Vivian Barnette
Dissertations
Perceptions of clinical supervision of 175 majority and minority counseling psychology doctoral students selected from a national pool was the study’s focal point. Instruments used were the Revised Relational Inventory (RRI; Barrett- Lennard, 1962; Schacht, Howe, & Berman, 1988) and the Supervision Perception Form-Trainee (SPF-T) developed by Heppner and Roehlke (1984). Participants were instructed to based their ratings on their last supervision experience. Data were collected and scored on the five subscales o f the RRI (Congruence, Empathetic Understanding, Regard, Unconditionality, and Willingness to be Known) and the two subscales of the SPF-T (Willingness to Learn and Supervisory Impact).

Site-Based Management And Student Achievement, Roxana Marie Hopkins
Site-Based Management And Student Achievement, Roxana Marie Hopkins
Dissertations
The question that this study seeks to answer is. Does site-based management increase student achievement? Researchers believe that when a school can function more like a closed system, involved in site-based decision making, the culture of the organization may be more conducive to higher student achievement. This study has attempted to determine if there is a basis for this belief.
Supporting the study are three organization theories. Bureaucracy Theory, Systems Theory, and Human Resource Development Theory. These three theories run like threads in a tapestry throughout the research and legislation upon which this research is developed.
Researchers, up to this …
Foundations Of Board Development: Theory And Practice In Community Service Organizations, David P. Moxley
Foundations Of Board Development: Theory And Practice In Community Service Organizations, David P. Moxley
Dissertations
As community service agencies become increasingly responsible for the provision of numerous social benefits relevant to the advancement of the social welfare of communities, the effective performance of their governance boards becomes an important aspect of a policy of privatization. This dissertation examines the role of these boards in contemporary human services and community development, and the important functions they serve in the effective transfer of social products, goods, and services from the public to nonprofit sector.
The author introduces the idea of board development as an imperative for community service boards to embrace in order to strengthen their service …
Evaluating The Effects Of Postive Peer Reporting On Social Acceptance, Mary Short
Evaluating The Effects Of Postive Peer Reporting On Social Acceptance, Mary Short
Dissertations
The effects of a positive peer reporting procedure on social status and social interactions were assessed. Children who are socially rejected seem to be disliked by their peers due to their high frequency of negative behaviors and low frequency of positive behaviors. Therefore, to decrease the negative behaviors and increase the positive behaviors, rejected children were asked to make positive comments about their peers. Participants included 4 children, ages 10-15 years. A multiple baseline across subjects design was utilized. Collection of baseline data began immediately following the confirmation of consent and eligibility for the child to participate. Initial baseline data …

Hopf Bifurcation In Models For Pertussis Epidemiology, Herbert W. Hethcote, Yi Li, Zhujun Jing
Hopf Bifurcation In Models For Pertussis Epidemiology, Herbert W. Hethcote, Yi Li, Zhujun Jing
Mathematics and Statistics Faculty Publications
Pertussis (whooping cough) incidence in the United States has oscillated with a period of about four years since data was first collected in 1922. An infection with pertussis confers immunity for several years, but then the immunity wanes, so that reinfection is possible. A pertussis reinfection is mild after partial loss of immunity, but the reinfection can be severe after complete loss of immunity. Three pertussis transmission models with waning of immunity are examined for periodic solutions. Equilibria and their stability are determined. Hopf bifurcation of periodic solutions around the endemic equilibrium can occur for some parameter values in two …
An Essay On Teaching Professional Responsibility, L. Ray Patterson
An Essay On Teaching Professional Responsibility, L. Ray Patterson
Northern Illinois University Law Review
There is, I argue, need for a new approach to teaching law students how to become professionally responsible lawyers. The core problem in teaching the professional responsibility course is that it is a course in lawyer's law that treats only the ethical rules and ignores the fact that procedural and malpractice rules are also relevant. If, however, the professional responsibility course becomes a course in lawyer's law, it follows that it must encompass rules of procedure, rules of malpractice, and rules of ethics (which should be identified as what they are, rules of discipline). There is, however, a development that …

Ethics 2000: What Might Have Been, Steven C. Krane
Northern Illinois University Law Review
The Model Rules of Professional Conduct can perhaps be analogized to a modest house built in the early 1960s. The kitchen and bathroom were updated in the late 1970s, and the garage was converted into an extra room, but otherwise the house has remained unchanged. By the late 1990s, however, it became apparent that the occupants of the house had - along with their neighborhood - changed dramatically. The house no longer met their needs. Clearly, what is needed is for the Commission to build a new house for the occupants to live in. Instead, the Commission is redecorating. It …

Lawyers, First Principles, And Contemporary Challenges: Explorations, George Anastaplo
Northern Illinois University Law Review
The preparation of this Collection chanced to be stimulated by a current Illinois bar admission controversy which has reminded observers of my own bar admission controversy of the 1950s. My April 15, 1999 talk at Northern Illinois University, prompted by these reminders, has served as the point of departure in response to an invitation to bring together in this law review various (mostly previously unpublished) talks and papers of mine about lawyers and the law.
Repeal Of Baseball's Longstanding Antitrust Exemption: Did Congress Strike Out Again?, Charles Allen Criswell Jr.
Repeal Of Baseball's Longstanding Antitrust Exemption: Did Congress Strike Out Again?, Charles Allen Criswell Jr.
Northern Illinois University Law Review
In 1922, the Supreme Court of the United States ruled that baseball was not interstate commerce and was thus not subject to the restrictions of antitrust laws. Since that time, numerous courts refused to hear cases attacking baseball on antitrust grounds. Under the newly enacted Curt Flood Act of 1998, the practices of anyone involved in organized professional major league baseball that relate to the employment of major league baseball players are now subject to antitrust laws in the same manner as those involved in other professional sports businesses affecting interstate commerce. However, the bill makes no attempt to repeal …
Settlement Ethics And Lawyering In Adr Proceedings: A Proposal To Revise Rule 4.1, James J. Alfini
Settlement Ethics And Lawyering In Adr Proceedings: A Proposal To Revise Rule 4.1, James J. Alfini
Northern Illinois University Law Review
At the close of the twentieth century, we are witnessing very significant changes in the litigation of civil disputes in our society. Much of the change has to do with a more expansive view by lawyers and judges of the means that may be employed for resolving civil disputes. Cases in litigation are increasingly being sent to mediation, arbitration, summary jury trial, early neutral evaluation, and other alternatives to adjudication. Lawyers are beginning to advise their clients of the availability of these options and are representing their clients in these alternative fora. Much has been said and written about these …
The Swift Rail Act: Will Sleepless Citizens Be Able To Quiet Train Whistles, And At What Cost?, Mark A. Gruenes
The Swift Rail Act: Will Sleepless Citizens Be Able To Quiet Train Whistles, And At What Cost?, Mark A. Gruenes
Northern Illinois University Law Review
Frustrated by the noise caused by train whistles, many Illinois municipalities have passed ordinances that ban trains from blowing their whistles at local crossings. Despite these local ordinances, however, railroads continue to instruct their engineers to sound whistles. Making matters worse for sleepless Illinois residents, the Federal Government entered the picture in 1994 when the Swift Rail Development Act of 1994 ("Swift Rail Act" or "Act") was made law. The Swift Rail Act directs the Secretary of Transportation ("Secretary") to promulgate regulations requiring trains to sound a "locomotive horn"' at all public highway-rail grade crossings. These regulations will preempt state …

Elderly Respondents' Perceptions Of Patronizing Speech By Service Providers Toward Elderly Adults., Tammi Rae La Tourette
Elderly Respondents' Perceptions Of Patronizing Speech By Service Providers Toward Elderly Adults., Tammi Rae La Tourette
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
This study examined the effects of several factors in elderly respondents' evaluations of neutral and patronizing speech by nurses toward elderly targets. Thirty-eight nursing home and 62 community Caucasian elderly women viewed two videotaped vignettes, one in which a nurse spoke to an elder target in a patronizing tone, and one with a neutral tone. Both samples rated the nurse more favorably, rated the elder target more satisfied with the conversation, and assumed that the nurse-elder dyad knew each other better when the nurse's speech was neutral as opposed to patronizing. Contrary to what was predicted, community elders did not …

A Comparative Gene Map Of The Horse (Equus Caballus), Alexandre R. Caetano, Yow-Ling Shiue, Leslie A. Lyons, Stephen J. O'Brien, Thomas F. Laughlin, Ann T. Bowling, James D. Murray
Biology Faculty Articles
A comparative gene map of the horse genome composed of 127 loci was assembled based on the new assignment of 68 equine type I loci and on data published previously. PCR primers based on consensus gene sequences conserved across mammalian species were used to amplify markers for assigning 68 equine type I loci to 27 horse synteny groups established previously with a horse-mouse somatic cell hybrid panel (SCHP, UC Davis). This increased the number of coding genes mapped to the horse genome by over 2-fold and allowed refinements of the comparative mapping data available for this species. In conjunction with …

A radiation hybrid (RH)-derived physical map of 25 markers on the feline X chromosome (including 19 Type I coding loci and 6 Type II microsatellite markers) was compared to homologous marker order on the human and mouse X chromosome maps. Complete conservation of synteny and marker order was observed between feline and human X chromosomes, whereas the same markers identified a minimum of seven rearranged syntenic segments between mouse and cat/human X chromosome marker order. Within the blocks, the feline, human, and mouse marker order was strongly conserved. Similarly, Y chromosome locus order was remarkably conserved between cat and human …
The Role Of Brn-3.2 In Retinal Ganglion Cell Differentiation, Jerin Marie Wright
The Role Of Brn-3.2 In Retinal Ganglion Cell Differentiation, Jerin Marie Wright
Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects
Within the retina, the POU domain of transcription factors brn-3.0, brn-3.1, and brn-3.2 are present only in retinal ganglion cells. These genes are believed to be involved in establishing neural cell lineages in mammals. In this study brn-3.2 was examined by comparing the number of ganglion cells present during postnatal development in normal mice (+/+), in mice homozygous (-/-) for the brn-3.2 gene, and in adult mice with a heterozygous gene deletion (+/-) for brn-3.2. Optic nerve cross sections were imaged by electron microscopy, and axon profiles counted systematically by hand. These counts were then related to the nerve cross …
