Information Search And Creativity: The Role Of Need For Cognition And Personal Involvement, Jody J. Illies
Information Search And Creativity: The Role Of Need For Cognition And Personal Involvement, Jody J. Illies
Student Work
The effects of type of personal involvement and need for cognition on information search behaviors and creative problem solving were investigated. It was predicted that participants who are involved through the personal relevancy of the outcome of a problem would engage in more information search behaviors and be more creative than participants who are involved through having their values and morals engaged. It was also predicted that participants high in need for cognition would engage in more information search behaviors and would be more creative than would participants low in need for cognition. Results showed that information search behaviors effectively …
The Effects Of Choice And Ego-Involvement On Confidence Judgments, Jonathan H. Chow
The Effects Of Choice And Ego-Involvement On Confidence Judgments, Jonathan H. Chow
Student Work
Studies on confidence judgments have generally shown that people are overconfident about their abilities or knowledge, and their confidence judgments are not well calibrated. The purpose of this study was to contribute toward a more precise and defensible version of how motivational factors interact with cognitive biases to influence confidence judgments. Review of the effect of choice on confidence judgments suggests an avenue to study the joint effect of motivational factors and cognitive biases on confidence judgments. In particular, the study investigated how motivational factors such as ego-involvement interact with cognitive biases involved in making choices to increase overconfidence in …
The Impact Of Mentoring On The Academic Achievement Of At-Risk Youth, Lynn A. Thompson
The Impact Of Mentoring On The Academic Achievement Of At-Risk Youth, Lynn A. Thompson
Student Work
Since the late 1980's, planned mentoring programs have flourished as one possible solution to the problems affecting youth. Little research has been conducted evaluating mentoring programs in spite of the generally accepted belief that only positive effects can result from planned mentoring. This study examined the impact of mentoring on the academic achievement of at risk youth involved in the Big Brothers/Big Sisters of the Midlands’ program. Individual academic achievement tests were administered to 12 boys in the treatment group (i.e., had a mentor) and 13 boys in the control group (i.e., on a waiting list to receive a mentor) …

Promising Practice For K-16 - Project Connect: School-University Collaboration For Service-Learning, Education Commission Of The States
Partnerships/Community
Partnership is a recurring theme in education these days: partnerships between schools and communities, between colleges and nonprofit organizations, between high schools and elementary schools, and between K-12 and higher education systems. Whether one refers to the latter partnerships as K-16, Pre-K-H or K-PhD, what truly defines them is the level and type of interactions among the school, university and community.
Applying Theory To Community Service: A Boyeristic Model, Lyle Flint
Applying Theory To Community Service: A Boyeristic Model, Lyle Flint
Service Learning, General
In 1994 fifty faculty members, representing various departments and colleges at Ball State University, met and, for several days, discussed Boyer's (1990), Scholarship Reconsidered The result of these discussions was, A Different Dawn, a proposal seeking a reconsideration of the traditional lines of scholarly productivity. While a full implementation of Boyer's model has not yet appeared in governance documentation, particularly promotion and tenure documentation, at Ball State it has been embraced by the administration and by a large number of the faculty. Central to Boyer's model is the call for service to the community outside of the academy.

Inside A Swiss Army Knife: An Assessment Of Americorps, James L. Perry, Ann Marie Thomson, Mary Tschirhart, Debra Mesh, Geunjoo Lee
Service Learning, General
This study reviews the goals and achievements of AmeriCorps, the national service program championed by President Clinton and approved by Congress in 1993. We identify five AmeriCorps goals: satisfying unmet social needs, developing corps members, enhancing the civic ethic, reinvigorating lethargic bureaucracies, and bridging race and class. The evidence of AmeriCorps' effectiveness is not definitive. Self-reports from recipient programs, selective cost-benefit analyses, and some survey evidence indicate some positive results. More fine-grained survey and field research raise questions about AmeriCorps' overall effects. Much more research is needed before policy makers and citizens can determine AmeriCorps' productivity.

There's Nothing Special About Sex: The Supreme Court Mainstreams Sexual Harassment, Rebecca White
There's Nothing Special About Sex: The Supreme Court Mainstreams Sexual Harassment, Rebecca White
Scholarly Works
In this Essay, Professor White argues that the Supreme Court finally has merged analysis of sexual harassment law with other claims of intentional discrimination. Professor White contends that the Court's decision in Meritor Savings Bank, FSB v. Vinson created confusion over the proper analysis of sexual harassment claims by seemingly embracing quid pro quo and hostile work environment theories as distinct forms of discrimination and by suggesting that at least some sexual harassment claims may warrant a revised approach to employer liability. In the wake of Meritor, sexual harassment claims increasingly were evaluated differently from other claims of disparate treatment, …

Religion And Violence In Popular Film, Bryan Stone
Religion And Violence In Popular Film, Bryan Stone
Journal of Religion & Film
Contemporary viewers of popular film are likely to have their values, perceptions, and behavior with regard to violence shaped by the cumulative effect of film conventions and recurrent images. An analysis of the top grossing films during the 1990's reveals that when religion is portrayed in connection with violence, it is rarely taken seriously as a motivating force for rejecting violence. On the contrary, while religion can play a chaplaincy or sanctuary role on screen for victims of violence, it typically serves either as a force for justifying and legitimating violence or as a device for enhancing the entertainment value …

Stage Directions Uncovered : The Author's Voice In Modern English Drama, Erin Nelson
Honors Theses
The introduction of the modern director at the end of th4e nineteenth century had a major impact on both the role of dramatists in the theatrical process and the way they use stage directions within playscripts. This change will be demonstrated by a study of the way English-speaking dramatists make their intentions known through the scripted stage directions, or didascaliae, in dramatic texts.

Stare Decisis In Historical Perspective: From The Founding Era To The Rehnquist Court, Thomas R. Lee
Stare Decisis In Historical Perspective: From The Founding Era To The Rehnquist Court, Thomas R. Lee
Vanderbilt Law Review
As numerous statistical studies have noted, the modern Supreme Court has overruled itself at a rate that far exceeds that which prevailed during the Court's early years. But is the accelerated rate a result of a decay in the Court's doctrine of stare decisis? Several critics have presumed so without engaging in any historical analysis. In this Article, Professor Lee offers a detailed historical examination of the evolution of the Supreme Court's overruling rhetoric. The author traces the evolution of important strands of the Rehnquist Court's doctrine of stare decisis from founding-era treatises to early applications in the Marshall and …
Contextualism: The Supreme Court's New Standard Of Judicial Analysis And Accountability, Shalin Sugunasiri
Contextualism: The Supreme Court's New Standard Of Judicial Analysis And Accountability, Shalin Sugunasiri
Dalhousie Law Journal
Over the past few years, the "contextual approach" to law has acquired considerable cachet in juridical discourses across the country. In the Supreme Court of Canada, contextualism is now the new standard of judicial analysis and accountability This article analyzes a decade of Supreme court jurisprudence on Charter interpretation, statutory interpretation and the common law in order to fully explicate what contextualism in law is, where it came from, and how it has achieved its current pre-eminent status. The future promise of the contextual approach is also here canvassed through a dialectical engagement with postmodernist concerns respecting inherent legal indeterminacies.
