A Strengths Perspective On Adolescent Parenting: Helping Educate, Empower, And Support Adolescent Mothers, Lisa A. Rittgers

Theses and Graduate Projects

The purpose of this study was to explore what adolescent parents participating in the Supporting Teens and Empowering Parents (S.T.E.P.) program identify as practical program suggestions that they felt would enhance the value and interest level for adolescent parents participating in parenting programs. This study was founded on the strengths approach to program development, which focuses on the belief that the strengths and resources of people and their environment should be the primary focus in development. The qualitative research data was gathered through exploratory interviews with four adolescent parents who participated in the S.T.E.P. program. There were five interview topics, …

Adult Attention Disorders: The Effect Of External Auditory Stimulation Of Attention And Comprehension During Reading, Angela M. Reining '99 Apr 1999

Adult Attention Disorders: The Effect Of External Auditory Stimulation Of Attention And Comprehension During Reading, Angela M. Reining '99

Honors Projects

This study examined the underarousal/optimal stimulation theory of ADHD. This theory states that an optimal level of arousal is maintained through moderation of incoming sensory stimuli (Zentall & Zentall, 1983). It is proposed that some of the deviant behavior displayed by hyperactive children represents a functional set of responses to conditions of abnormal sensory input. Attempts to correct this imbalance in arousal through chemical and sensory stimulation have been relatively successful. A recent study supported this theory by demonstrating the positive effect of music on children doing arithmetic problems. Using college students with a tendency toward attention disorders, the present …

Can A Multidisciplinary Team Decrease Hospital Length Of Stay For Elderly Trauma Patients?, Beth A. Ramsey Apr 1999

Can A Multidisciplinary Team Decrease Hospital Length Of Stay For Elderly Trauma Patients?, Beth A. Ramsey

Masters Theses

Elderly trauma patients often experience prolonged hospital stays. This study was done to determine if a multidisciplinary team approach to patient care would decrease hospital length of stay (LOS) for elderly trauma patients in the intensive care unit (ICU). Using a descriptive, correlational design, a convenience sample of 74 elderly patients aged 65 to 99 years was obtained from a trauma registry. The hypothesis that hospital LOS decreases for elderly trauma patients in the ICU who have a team approach to care was not supported using the t-test for independent means (t=1.6, df=72, p=.114). A second hypothesis proposed that the …

Proceedings Of The 1999 Onr Decision-Support Workshop Series: A Decision-Making Tools Workshop, Collaborative Agent Design Research Center Apr 1999

Proceedings Of The 1999 Onr Decision-Support Workshop Series: A Decision-Making Tools Workshop, Collaborative Agent Design Research Center

Collaborative Agent Design (CAD) Research Center

The rationale of the Workshop rests on some very simple observations. It is well known that every situation encountered by individuals and organizations demands an appropriate response. The choice of such a response from among a multitude of options is the decision-making process. Simple situations that give rise to a small number of options allow the decision maker to decide on a course of action without great effort. This state of affairs changes dramatically when the situations are complex and involve a large number of factors. In this case, an extensive field of options is engendered that makes it impossible …
