Mentor Relationships In Clinical Psychology Doctoral Training: Experiences Of Midlife Female Students, Kelley Dickson Carmichael Apr 1999

Mentor Relationships In Clinical Psychology Doctoral Training: Experiences Of Midlife Female Students, Kelley Dickson Carmichael

Doctor of Psychology (PsyD)

The literature is clear that mentoring can be an important element in the professional development of clinical psychology trainees. In this qualitative study of female graduate students between the ages of 40 and 55, it was discovered !hat mentoring was a rare occurrence. Eleven advanced psychology students and graduates offered perspectives on graduate training through the lens of their life experiences. This study informs us that although women in midlife value education and enjoy relationships, they are unlikely to engage with faculty in traditional mentor relationships. Many women noted that faculty did not appear available or invested in mentoring. This …

Mentoring Across Stages Of Psychology Graduate Student Development: A Theoretical Model, Laura L. Zorich Apr 1999

Mentoring Across Stages Of Psychology Graduate Student Development: A Theoretical Model, Laura L. Zorich

Doctor of Psychology (PsyD)

Developmental stage theories have often been used to explain human behavior during the last century They became especially popular following Erikson's ( 1968) theory of psychosocial development, which was viewed as a comprehensive model of psychosocial development Throughout the last thirty years, developmental theories have become increasingly specific as researchers have focused more narrowly on limited and focused dimensions of human development. The focus of this dissertation will be on graduate student development and the impact of the mentoring relationship on this development. Specifically, the question of how mentors impact and promote the development of graduate students is addressed. A …

Paper Session Iii-B - Development Of A Microgravity-Rated Hydroponic Plant Culture Apparatus, Howard G. Levine, William C. Piastuch, Thomas W. Dreschel

Space Congress® Proceedings

Porous tubes provide a novel means of growing plants hydroponically under conditions of microgravity. The experimental strategy for a spaceflight experiment utilizing this technology (anticipated in the 2000-2001 timeframe) is presented. The primary question to be addressed relates to the control of optimal rates of water provision, and how it can be expected to differ between the spaceflight and earth-based environments.

Paper Session Iii-B - Earth, Continuing To Be A Better Place To Live From International Endeavors In Space, Ronald A. Caswell

Space Congress® Proceedings

For the last millennium civilizations have built temples and structures that looked to the sky and lined up with the stars at special times of the year. Before light pollution, mankind saw the night sky clearly and pondered daily his place in the heavens. True access to space has taken place in the last one hundred years and started with Russia's Konstantin Edvardovich Tsiolkovsky's first writings about staged rockets to escape Earth's gravity and with Robert Goddard's humble beginnings. The first rocket to escape Earth's atmosphere was launched by Wernher von Braun' team October 3rd 1942 from Peenemunde Germany. Mankind …

Behavioral Change Encouraged Noncoercively: An Effectiveness Study Of Riverside Middle School's Time Out Room, Dennis S. Perry

Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effectiveness of the newly implemented time-out room in changing the negative behavior that is exhibited by some middle school children. The time-out room is similar to the traditional in-school suspension room. The rooms differ in the duration of time that a student spends in the room and the services that the child receives while there. The student who was sent to the time-out room for behavior deemed unacceptable developed a plan to prevent any future reoccurrence of a similar offense. The student who spent time in the time-out room also received …

The Quality Of School Life Scale As A Predictive Indicator Of Student Disengagement From School, Sandra M. Lazar Apr 1999

The Quality Of School Life Scale As A Predictive Indicator Of Student Disengagement From School, Sandra M. Lazar

Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this ex post facto, action research project is to test the hypothesis that the Quality of School Life Scale (Epstein & McPartland, 1976) has the predictive capability to identify students, early in a school year, who later in the school year manifest traditional disengaged behaviors. If the hypothesis is supported and students who, as a group, score lower on the QSL Scale display significantly more traditional disengaged behaviors than higher scoring students, the finding would support using the QSL as a proactive assessment tool to identify students who are at-risk for disengagement.

This study has several phases: …

Sixteen subjects who attended either a resource room or a self-contained classroom for reading and language arts instruction served as subjects. The study …
