Physical Violence During Pregnancy: Maternal Complications And Birth Outcomes, Vilma E. Cokkinides, Ann L. Coker, Maureen Sanderson, Cheryl Addy, Lesa Bethea

CRVAW Faculty Journal Articles

Objective: To assess the association between physical violence during the 12 months before delivery and maternal complications and birth outcomes.

Methods: We used population-based data from 6143 women who delivered live-born infants between 1993 and 1995 in South Carolina. Data on women's physical violence during pregnancy were based on self-reports of partner-inflicted physical hurt and being involved in a physical fight. Outcome data included maternal antenatal hospitalizations, labor and delivery complications, low birth weights, and preterm births. Odds ratios and 95% confidence intervals were calculated to measure the associations between physical violence, maternal morbidity, and birth outcomes.

Results: The prevalence …

Beyond Celebration: A Call For The Study Of Traditions Of Dominance, Ann Ferrell May 1999

Beyond Celebration: A Call For The Study Of Traditions Of Dominance, Ann Ferrell

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

In this thesis I examine why and how the focus on aesthetic expression and the avoidance of making certain types of value judgments have shaped the discipline of folklore. In the first chapter I look briefly at some of the major figures and themes in our history in order to ascertain how we arrived at the perspective from which we now work. In Chapter Two I explore and critically examine the limited examples of North American folklore scholarship that examines "dysfunctional" folklore. In Chapter Three I consider the study of belief as an example of an area of folklore scholarship …

The purpose was to explore perceptions of pregnant and parenting substance abusing women in an outpatient drug treatment program regarding provider and social support. Also identified were aspects of the rehabilitation program perceived by the women as assisting them to maintain abstinence from substance use. Data were collected through a demographic questionnaire and a tool designed by the authors based on the Social Stress Model of Substance Abuse (Lindenberg, Gendrop, & Reiskin, 1993) and the literature of social support. The majority of the women were satisfied with their social support from family and friends. Sixty-seven percent of the women felt …

Transportation System In Malaysian Rural Areas, Hamidah Yusof May 1999

Transportation System In Malaysian Rural Areas, Hamidah Yusof

Master's Projects

This study aims to generate an empirical transportation model to facilitate and improve mobility in the rural areas of Malaysia. Mobility is a catalyst for economic and social development of the rural areas. Residents in the villages face two main problems: limited public transportation services and minimum goods transportation facilities. The number of passenger trips and trips for transporting goods is still at a minimum level which affects the planning of better transportation systems. Private companies and operators are not interested in investing in public transportation services as profits are uncertain.

Three villages in Malaysia have been selected for the …

Social Work Assessment: Case Theory Construction, Cynthia D. Bisman May 1999

Social Work Assessment: Case Theory Construction, Cynthia D. Bisman

Graduate School of Social Work and Social Research Faculty Research and Scholarship

To intervene effectively, social workers need to make sense of clients and their situations. A case theory approach to assessment provides a framework to formulate assessments that are clear and directly related to the real-world problems clients present. Explaining the problem situation, case theory forms the foundation for selection of intervention strategies and methods to achieve change. Building case theory requires practitioner abilities to form concepts, relate concepts into propositions, develop hypotheses, and organize these into a coherent whole. Including case background information, observations and relevant professional literature, case theory presents an accurate and cogent comprehension of the client Two …

Racial Identity Attitudes Among African-American Workers, Jennifer Stombaugh May 1999

Racial Identity Attitudes Among African-American Workers, Jennifer Stombaugh

Honors Theses

In this paper I compared racial identity attitudes of professional and non-professional African-American workers. Comparisons were made using means for each of the stages of the Racial Identity Attitude Scale. The Racial Identity Attitude Scale was developed by Janet Helms and was based on an identity model developed by Cross. Means for each stage are compared among men and women, professionals and non-professionals, salary, and educational levels. However, responses to the scale proved to be more interesting than the actual results. So, due to the overwhelming opposition to the use of this scale, I also discuss implications of the subjects …

Housing For Senior Citizens In Malaysia, Rugayah Ag. Besar

Master's Projects

Housing is one of the crucial issues in most of the countries. Housing or homes for senior citizens was established in the developed or western countries in the 1950s, and began in the developing countries in the 1980s. In Malaysia, various programs and housing policies were introduced for senior citizens in the early 1990s. Both government and private agencies in this country contribute in developing better housing designs and facilities for senior citizens in the form of institutions or homes. These institutions are normally occupied by the senior citizens who are not only poor but also unable to look after …

The Ethics Of Being A Commentator Iii, Erwin Chemerinsky, Laurie Levenson May 1999

The Ethics Of Being A Commentator Iii, Erwin Chemerinsky, Laurie Levenson

Mercer Law Review

The use of lawyers and law professors as commentators continues to increase. Although reporters have long used experts to explain and evaluate, in the last decade legal commentators have become a fixture in news stories about legal proceedings. A decade ago, when the McMartin Preschool case filled the news in Los Angeles, scarcely a commentator was used. A few years later, when the officers who beat Rodney King were tried in state court, daily legal commentary was absent. In sharp contrast, commentators were used on a regular basis during the federal prosecution of those officers. The subsequent trial of two …
