On Being A Happy, Healthy, And Ethical Member Of An Unhappy, Unhealthy, And Unethical Profession, Patrick J. Schiltz

Vanderbilt Law Review

Dear Law Student: I have good news and bad news. The bad news is that the profession that you are about to enter is one of the most unhappy and unhealthy on the face of the earth--and, in the view of many, one of the most unethical. The good news is that you can join this profession and still be happy, healthy, and ethical. I am writing to tell you how. I. THE WELL-BEING OF LAWYERS Lawyers play an enormously important role in our society. "It is the lawyers who run our civilization for us-our governments, our business, our private …

Retention Of Academic Skills Over The Summer Months In Alternative And Traditional Calendar Schools, Christy Nofsinger May 1999

Retention Of Academic Skills Over The Summer Months In Alternative And Traditional Calendar Schools, Christy Nofsinger

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

Alternative calendar schools are increasingly popular alternatives to the traditional nine-month school year and a three-month summer vacation. One purported advantage of a shorter summer vacation is the greater retention of academic material because there is less time to "forget" what was learned. While alternative calendar schools appear to be increasing in number, little research has been conducted to actually measure academic differences in these schools. The purpose of this research was to systematically compare the retention of academic skills of students in traditional and alternative calendar schools over the summer months. Three county-wide school districts participated in this study. …

The Process Of Becoming A Songwriter: A Qualitative Analysis Of Self-Perceptions And Early Environmental Experiences, Becky Ehlts May 1999

The Process Of Becoming A Songwriter: A Qualitative Analysis Of Self-Perceptions And Early Environmental Experiences, Becky Ehlts

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

Becoming a songwriter implies a process through which someone must experience specific things indigenous to the social world of songwriters. This research focused on the process someone goes through to become a songwriter. The process as described by the actor is influenced by both the actor and society. Previous research is limited to structural factors while this study allows the social actor to describe, in his or her own words, how his or her self-perceptions and early environmental influences have altered, influenced, and directed the process the songwriter experiences to become a member of the social world of songwriters. All …

Masking Hispanic Racism: A Cuban Case Study, Miguel A. De La Torre May 1999

Masking Hispanic Racism: A Cuban Case Study, Miguel A. De La Torre

Journal of Hispanic / Latino Theology

This essay considers the way identity performances and theological claims of white Cuban theologians masks the long-historical racism that has haunted Cuban culture throughout its history. The author considers concerns among today’s Black Cubans that national reconciliation Miami-style may reimpose silence and secondarity upon them as citizens. They fear any attempt by exilic Cubans to radically change the present government in La Habana, lest it creates a one-way empowerment of White Cubans once again. True Cuban reconciliation must confront Cuban White supremacism. Otherwise national “reconciliation” would occur only among white Cubans on both sides of the Florida Straits, excluding Black …

An Application Of Hirschi's Theory Of Social Control To The Study Of Partner Abuse, Barbara Fellows May 1999

An Application Of Hirschi's Theory Of Social Control To The Study Of Partner Abuse, Barbara Fellows

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

The purpose of this study was to determine if Hirschi's theory of social control could be applied to domestic violence. Two elements of Hirschi's theory of social control, attachment and beliefs, were used as the independent variables. The Conflict Tactics Scale was used to measure the dependent variables of directed non-contact violence and directed contact violence. Data was collected on 200 cohabiting heterosexual males. Half of these males were in court-ordered counseling programs, the other half belonged to civic or religious organizations. Crosstabulations were used to analyze the data. The Chi-square test of independence was used with an alpha level …

Farmhouses That Became Boarding Houses In The Catskill Mountains Of New York State, Virginia Scheer May 1999

Farmhouses That Became Boarding Houses In The Catskill Mountains Of New York State, Virginia Scheer

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

In this thesis the author uses oral histories to study vernacular architecture, analyzing the changes in the way people in the Catskills have used buildings, specifically farm dwellings, to make a living, first as farmers and then as proprietors of boarding houses. The Catskills region in upstate New York is well known for its dairy farms and also for its resorts, but little has been researched to trace continuities and discrepancies between the rural residents and urban visitors. Boarding on farms in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries showed continuity between the two groups: recent immigrants who lived in …

William Wheatley: A Retrospective, Melissa K. Kaup May 1999

William Wheatley: A Retrospective, Melissa K. Kaup

Theses

William F. Wheatley was an active participant during the "turbulent" typesetting years. His first years in the typographic field were spent working beside Bently Raak at Varityper Corporation. They worked with character designs for the Varityper and the Headliner "cold-type" line of machines and moved into collaborating with Photon, Inc. for photo typesetting machines. As the necessity for typographic experience increased for foreign languages, Mr. Wheatley was transferred to Varityper s European division. In the daily effort of obtaining typefaces and designing proper character sets, he became associated with many of the European type foundries and companies. Mr. Wheatley's experience …

Local And Global Stereopsis In The Horse., B Timney, K Keil May 1999

Local And Global Stereopsis In The Horse., B Timney, K Keil

Brain and Mind Institute Researchers' Publications

Although horses have laterally-placed eyes, there is substantial binocular overlap, allowing for the possibility that these animals have stereopsis. In the first experiment of the present study we measured local stereopsis by obtaining monocular and binocular depth thresholds for renal depth stimuli. On all measures, the horses' binocular performance was superior to their monocular. When depth thresholds were obtained, binocular thresholds were several times superior to those obtained monocularly, suggesting that the animals could use stereoscopic information when it was available. The binocular thresholds averaged about 15 min arc. In the second experiment we obtained evidence for the presence of …

Achieving Potential In Hospital Mergers, Sister Nancy Linenkugel May 1999

Achieving Potential In Hospital Mergers, Sister Nancy Linenkugel

Student Scholarship

This applied research project focused on hospital mergers and the combination of "business" and "people" factors that allow full potential to be achieved. The business factors included finances and the "people" factors related to culture and practices. We sought to examine whether or not both factors were necessary in order for the merger to reach full potential. "Merger" was defined as the creation of a single entity out of two in which there is movement of services or staff. A "merger stabilization model" was developed that predicted potential merger synergy as dependent upon "people" fit and "business" fit. Four merged …

An Historical Analysis Of Open Adoption In The United States, Molly Crosby Cave

Theses and Graduate Projects

Adoption has been a way of creating families for centuries. The trend toward more direct and communicative relationships between adoptees, birth parents and the adoptive parents is gaining favor in the adoption arena. The purpose of this analysis is to place an historical context on the evolution of open adoption and to analyze its strengths and weaknesses. The outcome of this research indicates that open adoption is a positive way to build families and create lasting relationships between the adoptee, birth parents and adoptive parents.

The Language Of Leadership, Lisa K. Larsen May 1999

The Language Of Leadership, Lisa K. Larsen

Theses and Graduate Projects

Companies serve their constituents, produce goods and sell services through the relationships they build which serve to increase the company's market share. This sustains the business. Otherwise, they are forgotten. This appears to be the case with any viable company. Companies, across many industries, cultivate their relationships by utilizing many economic and social tools. But, no tool is more important to gain a corporation competitive edge than the corporate commodity called jargon. I began thinking of the corporate arena as a place that needs effective leadership to explain the jargon that describes it. I decided to investigate the common business …

When Accuracy Hurts: Reactions Of Anxious–Ambivalent Dating Partners To A Relationship-Threatening Situation., William Ickes, Jami Grich, Jeffry A. Simpson May 1999

When Accuracy Hurts: Reactions Of Anxious–Ambivalent Dating Partners To A Relationship-Threatening Situation., William Ickes, Jami Grich, Jeffry A. Simpson

Psychology Faculty Publications - Archive

Why are individuals who are anxious and uncertain about their partner’s love and commitment especially likely to have turbulent and unstable relationships? Guided by three theoretical perspectives—Ickes and Simpson’s (1997) model of empathic accuracy in relationships, Bowlby’s (1969, 1973) attachment theory, and Holmes and Rempel’s (1989) appraisal model of trust, we examined how one psychological process—heightened empathic accuracy in relationship-threatening situations—might be associated with personal and relational distress. The participants inferred their dating partner's thoughts and feelings from a videotaped interaction in which they and their partner rated and discussed slides of either highly attractive or less attractive opposite-sex individuals. …

Containment To Enlargement: America's National Security Policy, Linda J. Thayne May 1999

Containment To Enlargement: America's National Security Policy, Linda J. Thayne

Undergraduate Honors Capstone Projects

With the demise of the Cold War, an internationalist philosophy towards national security has gained prominence among many of the political, social and economic leaders of the United States. Internationalists believe that the United States has a new role of advancing global peace and prosperity. This internationalist perspective has led to a reformulation of the United States' national security agenda. This thesis reviews the administrations new philosophical outlook on national security by examining the core premises and structural framework contained in the administrations new foreign policy agenda. The paper will briefly examine the motivation behind the reshaping of U.S. foreign …

The Genesis Of European Nationalism, Linda J. Thayne May 1999

The Genesis Of European Nationalism, Linda J. Thayne

Undergraduate Honors Capstone Projects

In the aftermath of the second world war to ravage Europe in a single generation, there emerged a conviction among many of the economic, political and social leaders of the most powerful nation-states of Europe and the United States that an equitable resolution to Europe's long standing national suspicions, hatreds and rivalries was crucial to prevent further warfare. For these Europeanists the means for effecting long-term peace and prosperity in Europe was the formation of an integrated European regime. Europeanists believed that the key to achieving this goal rested in their ability to intertwine the national interests of Europe's nation-states …

Child Language And Literacy Development: A Parenting Resource Handbook, Joan B. Harrison May 1999

Child Language And Literacy Development: A Parenting Resource Handbook, Joan B. Harrison

Undergraduate Honors Capstone Projects

One night a few years ago, my husband and I stopped in a fast-food restaurant to grab a sandwich. We sat down at a table and our eyes were drawn to a table close by. A young woman in her teens sat at the table, with a small infant in a carrier next to her on the floor. She sat, staring out the window, sipping a soft drink. After a few minutes, the baby began to fuss and squirm. The young woman continued to stare out the window. Soon the baby began to cry, but even this evoked no response …

Temperament, Attachment, And Parenting Stress In Infancy: Relations To Social Competence Of Second Graders, Gina A. Cook May 1999

Temperament, Attachment, And Parenting Stress In Infancy: Relations To Social Competence Of Second Graders, Gina A. Cook

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

The importance of social competence in children's development has been recognized, and evidence has been found that children who are socially incompetent are at risk for academic problems. Yet the influences that may be involved from infancy, such as temperament and attachment, have not been explored longitudinally. The purpose of this study was to investigate the influence of infant temperament characteristics on later social development and to explore the idea that this influence may be affected by the infant's attachment security mediated by parenting stress.

Eighteen-month-old infants, from a previous study, were studied as second graders to examine whether their …

Forced Sexual Intercourse In Relation To Female Adolescents' Risky Sexual Behavior, Psychopathology, And Behavior Problems, Mathew Christensen May 1999

Forced Sexual Intercourse In Relation To Female Adolescents' Risky Sexual Behavior, Psychopathology, And Behavior Problems, Mathew Christensen

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

During 1995, over 20,000 adolescents completed the in-home interview for The National Longitudinal Study of Adolescent Health (Add Health). One question asked females if they had ever been forced to have sexual intercourse (FSI). In addition, they were asked about other sexual behavior, their psychological well-being, and behavior problems. The present study examines the associations between FSI and 26 outcome variables, comparing adolescent females who reported FSI with females who reported voluntary intercourse, and with females who reported no intercourse. In addition, the large Add Health sample allowed comparisons between five race/ethnicity groups and four adolescent groups broken down by …

Congruency Of Identity Style In Married Couples, Jerry L. Cook May 1999

Congruency Of Identity Style In Married Couples, Jerry L. Cook

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

This study assessed the importance that similar identity style plays in the relationships within recently married couples. To assess the congruency of similar and dissimilar identity style, three postulates were analyzed. These postulates included: (a) Is there a gender difference in reports of marital intimacy? (b) Is similarity of identity style related to marital intimacy? (c) Is there an interaction effect between gender and similarity of identity style in relation to reports of marital intimacy? A sample consisting of 84 couples completed a survey containing questions relevant to identity and marital intimacy. Demographic information was also requested in the survey. …

The Relationship Between Parental Employment Stability And Child Outcome Measures, Thomas Michael Wolfe

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

The present study investigated the relationship between mothers', fathers', and parents' employment stability and five child cognitive and social outcome measures. A total of 179 children who attended Head Start between 1991 and 1995 participated in the study with their parents. Child outcomes were examined to determine if they varied as a function of employment stability categories. Children of parents possessing stable employment histories had significantly higher Woodcock-Johnson broad knowledge cluster scores than children of parents possessing unstable employment histories. Child outcomes generally did not vary as a function of employment stability categories. Number of employment changes was used to …

The Impact Of The Ideal Thin Body Image On Women, Nicole Hawkins May 1999

The Impact Of The Ideal Thin Body Image On Women, Nicole Hawkins

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Researchers and clinicians have postulated that the thin-ideal image portrayed in the media leads to body dissatisfaction and negative self-appraisals among women; however, there is little research that has directly examined the effects of these images on women. The purpose of this research investigation was to experimentally examine the effects of exposure to the thin-ideal on women's affect, self-esteem, body satisfaction, and level of internalization of the thin body image. This study also assessed how the thin-ideal image differentially impacted women with a diagnosed eating disorder. College women (N = 145) were randomly exposed to photographs from popular magazines …

The Perception And Analysis Of Authentic Graphical Elements : An Empirical Study Of Perceptual Skills And Analytical Tasks That Affect Graphicacy, Derek G. Borman May 1999

The Perception And Analysis Of Authentic Graphical Elements : An Empirical Study Of Perceptual Skills And Analytical Tasks That Affect Graphicacy, Derek G. Borman

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

In this study, the idea that authenticity should be integral to graphicacy research was advanced. That is, graphicacy researchers should use graphical stimuli that most closely approximate graphs as they might be encountered in the real world (i.e., in text books, newspapers, journals, etc.). It was contended that because of the lack of task authenticity and experimental control inherent in past studies of the analytical tasks and perceptual skills underlying graph reading, there was a need for further study of these issues. To this end, a 24-item graphicacy test was devised, such that key graphical elements and specifiers were more …
