Impact Of Snowfall On The Utah Preventive Aerial Hunting Program, Kimberly K . Wagner, Michael R. Conover Jan 1999

Impact Of Snowfall On The Utah Preventive Aerial Hunting Program, Kimberly K . Wagner, Michael R. Conover

United States Department of Agriculture Wildlife Services: Staff Publications

Aerial hunting is one of the tools used by wildlife managers to reduce predation by coyotes (Canis latrans) on livestock and wildlife (Guthery and Beasom 1977, Sterner and Schumake 1978, Stout 1982. Smith et al. 1986). In research conducted by Wagner and Conover (1999), areas with preventive aerial hunting had fewer confirmed and estimated lamb losses to coyote predation and required significantly fewer hours of additional corrective predation management than areas without aerial hunting. Aerial hunting is perceived to be especially valuable for large areas and areas with rough terrain and limited access (United States Department of the …

Effective Of Preventive Coyote Hunting On Sheep Losses To Coyote Predation, Kimberly Wagner, Michael Conover Jan 1999

Effective Of Preventive Coyote Hunting On Sheep Losses To Coyote Predation, Kimberly Wagner, Michael Conover

United States Department of Agriculture Wildlife Services: Staff Publications

Aerial hunting is commonly used by agriculture agencies in the Intermountain West to reduce coyote (Canis latrans) predation on domestic sheep. We assessed the effect of aerial hunting of coyotes on sheep losses to coyotes, and the need for corrective predation management (hours of work, device nights) on the same pastures when sheep arrived for the subsequent summer grazing season (3-6 months after aerial hunting). Comparisons were made between paired pastures with (treated) and without (untreated) winter aerial hunting from helicopters. Average (x ± SE) pasture size was 45.2 ± 14.1 km2 (n = 21) for treated …

Use Of Netted Cage Traps For Capturing White-Tailed Deer, Kurt C. Vercauteren, Jeff Beringer, Scott E. Hygnstrom Jan 1999

Use Of Netted Cage Traps For Capturing White-Tailed Deer, Kurt C. Vercauteren, Jeff Beringer, Scott E. Hygnstrom

United States Department of Agriculture Wildlife Services: Staff Publications

The safe and humane live capture of deer may be an important component of management and research projects. Growing populations of white-tailed deer (Odocoileus virginianus) in both urban and agricultural settings often conflict with local human interests and present challenges to natural resource managers. Netted cage traps can be an important tool when managing deer populations where traditional control methods may not be appropriate or acceptable. Netted cage traps can also be used by researchers to acquire deer for marking, measurements, or other non-lethal purposes. We discuss the design of netted cage traps, trapping techniques, and the handling …

Nightly And Seasonal Movements Of Boiga Irregularis On Guam, Mark Tobin, Robert Sugihara, Patricia Pochop, Michael Linnell Jan 1999

Nightly And Seasonal Movements Of Boiga Irregularis On Guam, Mark Tobin, Robert Sugihara, Patricia Pochop, Michael Linnell

United States Department of Agriculture Wildlife Services: Staff Publications

Brown tree snakes (Boiga irregularis, BTS), inadvertently introduced to the island of Guam shortly after World War II, have had catastrophic effects on the native fauna of this U.S. territory. We used radio-telemetry to monitor daytime refugia and nightly movements of 60 BTS (30 during each of two seasonal periods) to determine the extent of nightly, weekly, and monthly movements. Eighty-three percent of subadult daytime sightings were in trees, compared to only 49% of adult daytime sightings. Most measures of movement did not vary with seasonal period, sex, or age class. BTS moved an average of 64 m …

Repellents To Reduce Cable Gnawing By Northern Pocket Gophers, Stephen A. Shumake, Ray T. Sterner, Stanley E. Gaddis Jan 1999

Repellents To Reduce Cable Gnawing By Northern Pocket Gophers, Stephen A. Shumake, Ray T. Sterner, Stanley E. Gaddis

United States Department of Agriculture Wildlife Services: Staff Publications

There is a continuing need to develop improved repellent formulations to protect buried cable installations from damage by problem wildlife. We evaluated 2.0% mass/mass levels of capsaicin and denatonium benzoate in a polybutene carrier material (Indopol®) and an aboveground, rodent-deer plastic mesh barrier (Vexar®) for reducing gnawing by northern pocket gophers (Thomomys talpoides) on communications cable (RG-8U). When treatments were applied as surface coatings, neither capsaicin nor denatonium samples were lower (P > 0.05) in measnres of cable damage compared to control (Indopol® alone) or samples treated with Vexar® plastic mesh. When the test was repeated with a new …

Ontogenetic Shifts In Canion Attractiveness To Brown Tree Snakes (Boiga Irregularis), John A. Shivik, Larry Clark Jan 1999

Ontogenetic Shifts In Canion Attractiveness To Brown Tree Snakes (Boiga Irregularis), John A. Shivik, Larry Clark

United States Department of Agriculture Wildlife Services: Staff Publications

The brown tree snake (Boiga irregularis) is a nocturnal, primarily arboreal, rear-fanged colubrid native to parts of Australasia (Savidge, 1987; Greene, 1989). Throughout their range, brown tree snakes eat a variety of prey including lizards, rats, and birds (Greene, 1989; Shine, 1991; Rodda, 1992; Rodda et al., in press). Brown tree snakes on Guam have a wide diet consisting mainly of lizards and lizard eggs, but a variety of other items were found in snake stomachs, including odd items such as cooked spareribs (Savidge, 1988). Savidge (1988) noted an ontogenetic shift in Guam brown tree snake diets; small …

The Rome Treaty For An International Criminal Court: A Flawed But Essential First Step, Douglass Cassel Jan 1999

The Rome Treaty For An International Criminal Court: A Flawed But Essential First Step, Douglass Cassel

Journal Articles

Last summer more than 150 UN member states met in Rome to negotiate a treaty to establish a permanent international criminal court. Following years of preparatory meetings in New York and five weeks of negotiation in Rome, they voted 120 to seven, with twenty-one abstentions, for a treaty to establish an International Criminal Court (ICC) to hear future cases of genocide, serious war crimes and crimes against humanity. Most of the world's democracies-western and central Europe together with countries like Argentina, Australia, Canada, Costa Rica, South Africa and South Korea-supported the ICC. Only two democracies-the U.S. and Israel-voted against, thereby …

Retribution And The Secondary Aims Of Punishment, Gerard V. Bradley Jan 1999

Retribution And The Secondary Aims Of Punishment, Gerard V. Bradley

Journal Articles

Punishing criminals involves more than visiting unwelcome experiences–the rack, the gallows, confinement, sitting in a corner–upon them. Privations such as these constitute the behavioral substratum, the raw material of punishment. But behaviors such as confinement become the acts that they are, including acts of punishment by confinement, according to the justifying aim(s) which suffuse(s) the behavior. For behaviors such as confinement are ambiguous; limiting another's freedom of movement may be constitutive of a number of different human acts, including quarantine, kidnapping, institutionalization, and imprisonment for crime. Same behavior, different acts. Each of the ends of punishment shapes privations imposed upon …

Study Of Ambient Noise In Shallow Water, Rachel Louise Pirie

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 1990 - 1999

This thesis describes a series of measurements that took place over the duration of one year on the South Florida Testing Facility (SFTF) range, Dania, in order to survey the shallow water ambient acoustic environment. Three groups of data sets were taken in December 1998, May 1999 and July 1999. The data was collected using the Ambient Noise Sonar (ANS) that was developed in the Ocean Engineering department at Florida Atlantic University. The ambient acoustic environment was found to be highly variable with two main components. Boat noise was found to primarily be associated with the inlet and a source …

Test Spaces, Nissim. Broudo Jan 1999

Test Spaces, Nissim. Broudo

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 1990 - 1999

A Test Space is a mathematical object which models the process of scientific inquiry. We examine the motivation of defining the Test Spaces and discuss connections between the Test Spaces and Metamathematics. A variant of Test Spaces called orthogonal partitions is introduced and we draw comparisons between the two. The combinatorial problems of counting finite Test Spaces and orthogonal partitions is highlighted. Some issues in manipulating infinite Test Spaces are discussed as well.

Synthesis Of Chitosan-Cis-Ddp Derivative, Ann-Marie Francis Jan 1999

Synthesis Of Chitosan-Cis-Ddp Derivative, Ann-Marie Francis

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 1990 - 1999

The formation of polymeric derivatives of the cancer drug Cis-dichlorodiaminoplatinum (II), cis-DDP, by the reaction of (1-4)-2-acetamide-2-deoxy-beta-D-glucose (Chitosan) with potassium tetrachloroplatinate is reported. Chelation of (1-4)-2-acetamide-2-deoxy-beta-D-glucose by tetrachloroplatinum (II) occurred through the amine groups leaving the hydroxyls unreacted and free to assist in making the products water soluble. It was hoped that such compounds would retain the anti tumor activity of cis-DDP but produce fewer toxic side effects. Structural characterization involved infrared spectroscopy, mass spectroscopy, EDAX analytical methods. Products were also analyzed using light scattering photometry, elemental analysis and solubility studies. Additionally, the biological activity of water-soluble products was tested …

Symbols Of Racial Possibilities: Perspectives On Nella Larsen, James Weldon Johnson, And Jean Toomer, Suzanne Marie Lynch Jan 1999

Symbols Of Racial Possibilities: Perspectives On Nella Larsen, James Weldon Johnson, And Jean Toomer, Suzanne Marie Lynch

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 1990 - 1999

The question of hybridity is a complex social issue that commonly addresses agendas of heart, politics, and mind. It is a question that is both deeply personal and overtly political and addresses the entire spectrum of American society. Hybridity, in my view, can be used to interrogate a society rooted in ideas of race definition. Nella Larsen's Quicksand, Jean Toomer's Cane, and James Weldon Johnson's Autobiography of an Ex-Coloured Man depict the struggles of the mixed-race characters as they seek an identity of wholeness through attempting to live up to a social prescription of sameness. These characters wander in search …

The Effects Of An External Nasal Dilator On The Work Of Breathing During Exercise, Todd Robert James Jan 1999

The Effects Of An External Nasal Dilator On The Work Of Breathing During Exercise, Todd Robert James

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 1990 - 1999

Effects of an external nasal dilator on the work of breathing was measured during exercise in 14 untrained students (age, 24 $\pm$ 3 yr.). Two maximal, incremental ergometer tests were performed to exhaustion. Subjects wore a placebo or an active nasal dilator strip, in random order, during each test. Measurement of inspiratory elastic work (inew), inspiratory resistive work (inrw), and expiratory resistive work (exrw) was done using an esophageal balloon. Measured variables included VO$\sb2$, V$\rm\sb{E}$, V$\rm\sb{T}$, frequency of breathing (f), inew, inrw, and exrw, (work expressed in joules). There were no significant differences in VO$\sb2$, V$\rm\sb{E}$, V$\rm\sb{T}$ or f between …

Transmission Of Matrilineal/Matriarchal Society In Ethnic American And In Fantasy Literature, Dama Scott Watterson Jan 1999

Transmission Of Matrilineal/Matriarchal Society In Ethnic American And In Fantasy Literature, Dama Scott Watterson

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 1990 - 1999

Maya Angelou uses an autobiographical form in I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings to portray her childhood. The lessons she acquires as a child are depicted in positive scenes between her and her grandmother and other female figures in her life. Likewise, Maxine Hong Kingston portrays, in an arguably autobiographical form, her life lessons in Woman Warrior. She aligns herself matrilineally with her female ancestors and heritage. Struggles between her American self and the Chinese heritage her mother speaks of become her means for finding self-definition. In contrast, Sheri S. Tepper's fantasy novel A Plague of Angels, portrays a …

Unguarded Gate: Infiltrations Of Patriarchy In Sheri S. Tepper's "The Gate To Women's Country", Thorun. Zitner-Crawford Jan 1999

Unguarded Gate: Infiltrations Of Patriarchy In Sheri S. Tepper's "The Gate To Women's Country", Thorun. Zitner-Crawford

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 1990 - 1999

Throughout The Gate to Women's Country, Sheri S. Tepper covers the patriarchal structures of her imagined society with a veneer of feminism. The novel contains many hallmarks of a feminist utopia, such as a concern for the environment and a distrust of men and technology; yet all are undercut by the traditional structures that she retains of class, military machismo, sexuality, and motherhood. An attempt to read The Gate to Women's Country as "a fortifying tonic" (Simmons 22) leads one instead into the "politics of despair" ("Reconsiderations" 44), as one realizes that Tepper is exaggerating, not resolving, the problematic relations …

Use Of Gis To Improve The User Interface Design Of An Airline Reservation Web Site, Jennifer L. Wilson Jan 1999

Use Of Gis To Improve The User Interface Design Of An Airline Reservation Web Site, Jennifer L. Wilson

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 1990 - 1999

As use of the Internet becomes pervasive, user interface design of web sites becomes increasingly important. Consumers must be able to easily and quickly perform the functions they desire. Travel industry applications have a large market potential on the Internet. Because of the geographical relationships of locations and functions in the travel industry, the use of cartography and GIS can be very beneficial to user interfaces of these applications. This paper examines functions, inputs, and user interface of current airline reservation web sites, and looks at some current examples of GIS use on the Internet. It then discusses ways to …

Using Pneumatic Fracturing To Reduce Borehole Damage In Wells In Southern Florida, R. Simon A Sunderland Jan 1999

Using Pneumatic Fracturing To Reduce Borehole Damage In Wells In Southern Florida, R. Simon A Sunderland

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 1990 - 1999

Two wells installed in an unconfined, sandy aquifer in southern Florida exhibited low specific capacities and well loss coefficients resulting from borehole damage from drilling. Hollow-stem augers used to install the wells smeared drill cuttings onto the borehole walls reducing the hydraulic connection between the wells and the aquifer. Pneumatic fracturing was used to improve the specific capacity of both wells by improving the hydraulic connection with the aquifer. The pneumatic fracturing involved injecting air under high pressure into the surrounding formation to create a network of fractures. The success of the pneumatic fracturing was evaluated by recalculating the specific …

Utopian Geography Of Estero, Florida, Barbara Hutchings Jan 1999

Utopian Geography Of Estero, Florida, Barbara Hutchings

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 1990 - 1999

This thesis explores the landscape and beliefs of a nineteenth century utopian community, the Koreshan Unity, a group who settled the town of Estero, Florida. This research explains the alternative geography of the Koreshans, a worldview that claimed that we live on the inside of a hollow sphere. Their founder, Dr. Cyrus Teed, created this theory and made it the core of a social structure that also supported celibacy and socialism. I also describe the Koreshan Geodetic Expedition, a survey of the earth's curvature, and how it claimed to use scientific methods to prove the earth's concavity. The history, beliefs, …

Variations In Model Discretization Methodology And Its Effects Upon Groundwater Modeling, Jason L. Whitman Jan 1999

Variations In Model Discretization Methodology And Its Effects Upon Groundwater Modeling, Jason L. Whitman

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 1990 - 1999

It is a fundamental supposition in groundwater modeling that as the discretization of a model domain is increased, the model's precision increases accordingly (Anderson and Woessner, 1992). However, the quantifiable amount and specific circumstances of that benefit remain unclear. The purpose of this research is to examine the output variations discerned as a result of applying successively coarsened discretization scenarios to a groundwater model test case. The test models, comprised of both regular (square) and irregular forty-four individual model output solutions. Detailed analysis of the piezometric head values, mass balance flow terms, and solution convergence times for each model run …

Virtual Leaky Bucket For Congestion Control In High-Speed Atm Networks, Fahad A. Alfadhel Jan 1999

Virtual Leaky Bucket For Congestion Control In High-Speed Atm Networks, Fahad A. Alfadhel

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 1990 - 1999

High speed ATM networks support a variety of communication services, that have different traffic characteristics, which causes the network to be congested quickly. An ATM network with different communication services, data, voice and video, is simulated to study the effect of congestion on network operation. A modified leaky bucket mechanism is used to shape the traffic entering the network, which improved the performance in terms of cell losses and cell delay. The original leaky bucket mechanism is so conservative, that it drops a large number of ATM cells. Another scheme called virtual leaky bucket is proposed in this thesis. In …

Villainous Spider And The Uebermensch: Nietzschean Paradigms In Matthew Lewis's "The Monk", Richard Scott Turner Jan 1999

Villainous Spider And The Uebermensch: Nietzschean Paradigms In Matthew Lewis's "The Monk", Richard Scott Turner

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 1990 - 1999

Matthew Lewis's The Monk portrays the catastrophic effects that sexual repression has on Ambrosio, a monk who is raised in a monastery. Lewis also demonstrates the freedom found in sexual fulfillment in the form of Matilda, the woman who seduces Ambrosio and leads him toward his final destruction. A Nietzschean critique of Christianity provides a connection between eighteenth century dissatisfaction with Roman Catholic doctrines and Nietzsche's aversion to the self-abnegation required to save the soul from eternal perdition. Ambrosio is the Nietzschean paradigm of the hypocritical ascetic, who hides his vice beneath the monkish robes of piety. Matilda, on the …
