International Education At The Community College Level: Evaluation Of Levels Of Commitment And Curriculum Integration, Joan Ortega-Cowan Jan 1999

International Education At The Community College Level: Evaluation Of Levels Of Commitment And Curriculum Integration, Joan Ortega-Cowan

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 1990 - 1999

As global interdependency becomes increasingly more apparent in our shrinking world, changing economic conditions draw people of many different cultures closer together. It is crucial that we develop knowledge and understanding of international cultures and countries to initiate and encourage reciprocal commercial and cultural exchange between local community colleges and the global community. Community colleges have an exceptional opportunity to provide effective leadership in order to implement and integrate international education (IE) concepts in their mission statement, goals and curriculum. The ultimate goal should be to institutionalize IE throughout the curriculum, faculty, staff, and student body of all community colleges. …

Investigation Of Dynamically Coated Alumina Stationary Phases For Reversed-Phase High-Performance Liquid Chromatography, Veronica Ferguson Jan 1999

Investigation Of Dynamically Coated Alumina Stationary Phases For Reversed-Phase High-Performance Liquid Chromatography, Veronica Ferguson

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 1990 - 1999

Dynamically coated alumina (DCA) was prepared by pumping mobile phase containing methanol and concentration of 10mM Sodium Lauryl Sulphate (SLS), an anionic surfactant prepared in water, through a bare alumina column. The mechanism of separation of a test mixture were characteristic of reversed phase chromatography as evident in the decreased retention time as the percentage of methanol increased. However, the effects of changing the pH of the mobile phase on retention of solutes were different than that expected in reversed phase separations, indicating the presence of another retention mechanism. Excellent resolutions, peak shapes and peak symmetries were obtained using the …

Investigation Of Relationships Between School Culture And Leadership Social Interest, Kimberly Ann Knutson Jan 1999

Group Two schools, also members of the staff development consortium, had made an additional commitment to participate in an action research process to improve student achievement. Group Three schools were designated as community schools. Four research questions were explored: (a) Is there a relationship between school leadership social interest and school learning culture? (b) Is there a relationship between school leadership social interest and school type? …

Linking Dynamic Social Impact Theory To Social Representation Theory: The Emergence Of Social Representations Of Aggression Through Electronic Communication, Samantha Walker Jan 1999

Linking Dynamic Social Impact Theory To Social Representation Theory: The Emergence Of Social Representations Of Aggression Through Electronic Communication, Samantha Walker

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 1990 - 1999

Social representations consist of beliefs, values and norms that influence thought and behavior. Moscovici's Social Representation Theory provides an explanation for how social representations are formed, mutate, and survive, while Dynamic Social Impact Theory provides a framework by which to examine the emergence of macro-social phenomena from everyday communication (i.e., clustering, consolidation and continued diversity). Previous research has not examined, but has assumed, the processes by which social representations of aggression develop. The purpose of the present study was to examine social representations (SRs) of direct and indirect aggression and the process by which SRs emerge from interpersonal communication. Specifically, …

Larval Release By The Fiddler Crab Uca Thayeri: Timing And Cues Used Under Different Tidal Regimes, Kay Kellmeyer Jan 1999

Larval Release By The Fiddler Crab Uca Thayeri: Timing And Cues Used Under Different Tidal Regimes, Kay Kellmeyer

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 1990 - 1999

Hatching rhythms of intertidal crabs vary in timing with species, burrow position, tidal regimes and larval vulnerability. Most fiddler crabs time larval release with the nocturnal high fide. This is possible in semidiurnal tidal regimes because there are nocturnal high tides each lunar day. However, mixed tidal regimes have a semidiurnal and a diurnal period. During the diurnal phase high fide occurs in the afternoon. This variation in tidal inundation patterns may influence the timing of larval release. Comparisons between two populations of fiddler crab (Uca thayeri ), exposed to different tidal regimes, indicated they time larval release differently. The …

Isolation And Characterization Of Chlorophyll And Carotenoids In Florida Bay: Phytoplankton, Microphytobenthos And Sediments, Joseph William Loitz Jan 1999

Isolation And Characterization Of Chlorophyll And Carotenoids In Florida Bay: Phytoplankton, Microphytobenthos And Sediments, Joseph William Loitz

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 1990 - 1999

An analysis of the waters, microphytobenthos, and carbonate marl sediments of Florida Bay was performed using ion-paired RP-HPLC-PDA for chemotaxonomic characterization of past and present photoautotrophic, communities. Application of regression formulae was determined to be applicable for the waters, microphytobenthos, and surficial sediments (0--5 cm) of Florida Bay using chemotaxonomic principles. Loss of chemotaxonomically important pigments with depth prevented similar application in deeper strata (>5 cm), however, past oxic and anoxic trends could be determined. Sedimentary alteration of pigments are characterized by: rapid conversion of chlorophylls-alpha and bacteriochlorophylls-alpha to their respective pheophytins-alpha, creation of a 'carotenoid diol-cluster', equilibrium isomerization …

Large-Scale Molecular Dynamics Simulations Of Semiconductor Nanostructures, Charles F. Cornwell Jan 1999

Large-Scale Molecular Dynamics Simulations Of Semiconductor Nanostructures, Charles F. Cornwell

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 1990 - 1999

Classical trajectory molecular dynamics methods are used to investigate the critical strain of single-walled carbon nanotubes ("SWT") and the strength and extent of the interactions between 3D Ge structures on the surface of Si(001). The discrete model is capable of giving some insight into the critical strain of the SWT's beyond the limits of the continuous model and allow us to investigate the effects of lattice distortion due to the placement of Ge structures on the surface of a Si substrate. Total energy calculations performed using classical three-body interatomic potentials with appropriate boundary conditions for each case are used to …

Jupiter Inlet I (8pb34): A Test Case In The Use Of Ceramic Frequencies And Discriminant Analysis In Determining Cultural Affinity, James Patrick Pepe Jan 1999

Jupiter Inlet I (8pb34): A Test Case In The Use Of Ceramic Frequencies And Discriminant Analysis In Determining Cultural Affinity, James Patrick Pepe

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 1990 - 1999

Many archaeological culture area models have been proposed for southern Florida. The most important reason for the number of alternative models may be a lack of precise means to evaluate them in relation to individual archaeological sites. This thesis addresses these problems using Jupiter Inlet I (8PB34) as an example. The relative frequencies of ceramic types from this site are compared to other sites with generally accepted cultural affiliations. The multivariate statistical technique known as discriminant analysis is used to directly compare comparable components from each site. This analysis reveals that archaeological areas in southern Florida can be determined fairly …

Leadership On Trial: A Study Of Nelson Mandela's Rhetorical Strategies, Katrika Nordraka Romer-Sterling Jan 1999

Leadership On Trial: A Study Of Nelson Mandela's Rhetorical Strategies, Katrika Nordraka Romer-Sterling

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 1990 - 1999

For over four decades the Apartheid system in South Africa deprived many black South Africans their right to democracy. However, Nelson Mandela's leadership strategies would prove effective in helping the Anti-Apartheid movement achieve its common goal of universal suffrage for all South Africans. This thesis explores what made Mandela's rhetoric as a leader so effective during his courtroom testimonies from the Treason Trial in 1956 and the Rivonia Trial in 1964. A new model is developed to analyze leadership characteristics: charisma, prophecy, creativity, pragmatism and prophecy proved to be significant strategies in making his leadership rhetoric so effective. The purpose …

Magnetic Properties Of The Cmr Compound Lanthanum(1-X) Calcium(X) Manganese Oxygen(3), Daniel Harold Goodwin Jan 1999

Magnetic Properties Of The Cmr Compound Lanthanum(1-X) Calcium(X) Manganese Oxygen(3), Daniel Harold Goodwin

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 1990 - 1999

Measurements of magnetization versus temperature and field have been conducted on La1-xCaxMnO3 compounds which for some values of x exhibit colossal magnetoresistence (CMR). Recent theories propose that polaron forming double exchange interactions and Jahn-Teller distortions create a strong interaction amongst charge, spin and lattice degrees of freedom which is responsible for the unusually large magnotoresistence. In this work the enhancement of paramagnetic susceptibility is studied in order to investigate the possible existence of magnetic polarons. Enhancements of the effective moments are found in the range 0.15 < x < 0.94, which are qualitatively consistent with the existence of magnetic polarons. The findings are discussed within the framework of recent experimental and theoretical findings.

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 1990 - 1999

This thesis addresses studies on cost-functions developed on the basis of maximum entropy principle, for applications in artificial neural network (ANN) optimization endeavors. The maximization of entropy refers to maximizing Shannon information pertinent to the difference in the output and the teacher value of an ANN. Apart from the Shannon format of the negative entropy formulation a set of Csiszar family functions are also considered. The error-measures obtained, via these maximum entropy formulations are adopted as cost-functions in the training and prediction schedules of a test perceptron. A comparative study is done on the performance of these cost-functions in facilitating …

Managing The Conversion To A Reusable Container Program And Capturing The Total Cost With Simulation, Alex. Marron Jan 1999

Managing The Conversion To A Reusable Container Program And Capturing The Total Cost With Simulation, Alex. Marron

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 1990 - 1999

One compelling reason for converting to reusable containers is the conservation of natural resources. Other than the attractiveness of a potential cost savings, it could provide the firm with a good public relations image worth even more. Many firms are working toward being ISO (international Standards Organization) 14001 certified. ISO 14001 includes in its guidelines the need to reduce pollution. With this in mind, there is a need for better tools to predict cost when converting from disposable to reusable containers. This study provides a tool to estimate conversion cost based on a mathematical model that captures the important elements …

Performance Analysis Of Wireless Communication Systems In Multipath Fading Environments With Correlated Shadowing And Co-Channel Interference, Jingjun. Zhang Jan 1999

Performance Analysis Of Wireless Communication Systems In Multipath Fading Environments With Correlated Shadowing And Co-Channel Interference, Jingjun. Zhang

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 1990 - 1999

The performance aspects of conventional cellular (FDMA/TDMA) and CDMA systems with micro- and macroscopic diversity reception are investigated in a severe mobile communication environment which is characterized by path loss, correlated lognormal shadowing, multipath fading, background noise and interference. Under a co-channel interference-limited assumption, an exact analytical expression for the co-channel interference (CCI) probability is presented for a macroscopic diversity system with an arbitrary number of correlated macroscopic branches. For noise-limited systems, the average bit-error-rate (BER) and outage probability performances of a narrowband mobile communication system with micro- and macrodiversity reception are evaluated. In the relevant analysis, both Nakagami and …

Otto Jespersen At The "Wake": A Genetic Study Of Linguistic Sources For "Finnegans Wake", Erika. Rosiers Jan 1999

Otto Jespersen At The "Wake": A Genetic Study Of Linguistic Sources For "Finnegans Wake", Erika. Rosiers

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 1990 - 1999

During the composition process of Finnegans Wake, James Joyce made extensive use of notebooks in which he collected material from miscellaneous sources, crossing out entries and inserting them into his drafts, creating an encyclopedic work of a highly complex nature. Genetic criticism, approaching the literary work as a process rather than a product, examines these sources, notebooks, and drafts to gain insight into the development and meaning of the work. Joyce read and took notes from Otto Jespersen's Language, Its Nature, Development and Origin in 1923, Growth and Structure of the English Language in 1924, and An International Language in …

Predicting Success In The Associate Degree Nursing Program, Suzanne Johnson Crouch Jan 1999

Predicting Success In The Associate Degree Nursing Program, Suzanne Johnson Crouch

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 1990 - 1999

Admission criteria for the selection of students are determined by educational institutions. Presently, no objective instrument is used consistently as a predictor of successful nursing program completion (Haglund, 1978). The nursing department in the community college in this study utilizes the prerequisite college grade point average and the National League for Nursing pre-admission test for admission into the school of nursing. Admission into the associate degree nursing program is based solely on these two criteria. The purpose of this study was to assess the merit of the Watson-Glaser Critical Thinking Appraisal as a pre-admission criterion in conjunction with the currently …

Policies, Politics, And Other Activities Of President Richard M. Nixon To Influence American Young People, David Wayne Veenstra Jan 1999

Policies, Politics, And Other Activities Of President Richard M. Nixon To Influence American Young People, David Wayne Veenstra

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 1990 - 1999

Throughout his presidency, Nixon enacted several policies on behalf of young people, such as draft reform, enfranchisement for persons aged 18--20, employment plans, school desegregation, and a variety of forums for them to voice their opinion in government. Young people had attained an important political voice as their demonstrations frequently illustrated. Nixon reacted to their concerns, and, with his initiatives, undercut the legitimacy of street protests as an acceptable means to influence government. His policies, however, were often coupled with negative actions, including angry rhetoric and clandestine operations toward the antiwar movement and cynical statements about young people in private …

Rational Study Of Incompressible Turbulent Flows, Xiaoyan. Pu Jan 1999

Rational Study Of Incompressible Turbulent Flows, Xiaoyan. Pu

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 1990 - 1999

A new turbulence model is proposed in this dissertation for two-dimensional incompressible turbulent flows. The methodology used in the present study is a unilateral-statistical-average scheme with the concept of orthotropic eddy viscosity. This methodology has never been explored before in any research work of this nature. The distinguished feature of the unilateral-statistical-average scheme, compared to Reynolds averaging, is that the first-order information of the fluctuating velocity field is retained. This is achieved by dividing the fluctuating velocities into two groups and applying the average only to a single group. It is proved that the mean value of the fluctuating velocities …

Prehistoric Subsistence In The North American Southeast: A Quantitative Assessment Of Deer Utilization By Mississippian Populations, Richard E. Flaherty Jan 1999

Prehistoric Subsistence In The North American Southeast: A Quantitative Assessment Of Deer Utilization By Mississippian Populations, Richard E. Flaherty

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 1990 - 1999

This thesis attempts to demonstrate quantitatively that Mississippian populations in the prehistoric North American Southeast utilized deer as a functional domesticate. "Functional domesticate", a term developed specifically for this study, is defined as a subsistence source that is consistently and readily accessed, both spatially and temporally. The concept of "domestication" extends to those economies which do not have animal domesticates but have access to procurement areas where animal resources can be continually and efficently harvested. The hypothesis is validated by using Bruce Smith's faunal model developed in the 1970s. His model in quantified by developing regression equations, indexes, and by …

Physicians' Perceptions Of Managed Care, Michelle A. Angeletti Jan 1999

Physicians' Perceptions Of Managed Care, Michelle A. Angeletti

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 1990 - 1999

The active physician members of the Broward County Medical Association were sent a mail survey requesting information about their perceptions of and experiences with the managed care industry. Currently, as gatekeepers, physicians are the implement of the managed care system. From an organizational perspective, the role of implementer is a critical position and physicians are directly affected by and affect the operations of managed care as a healthcare delivery system. Even though managed care has the beneficial aspects of controlling healthcare costs and an emphasis on preventive care, it still appears that physicians perceive the managed care industry quite negatively. …

Psychoacoustic Evaluations Of The West Indian Manatee (Trichechus Manatus Latirostis), Edmund Roy Gerstein Jan 1999

Psychoacoustic Evaluations Of The West Indian Manatee (Trichechus Manatus Latirostis), Edmund Roy Gerstein

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 1990 - 1999

Psychoacoustic procedures were used to measure the heating thresholds of captive West Indian manatees under simultaneous masking conditions. Auditory detection thresholds of pulsed and non- pulsed pure tones, and complex sounds were measured against continuous white noise backgrounds through a series of forced-choice paradigms. Auditory thresholds as a function of signal intensity, center frequency, pulse repetition, spectral characteristics and bandwidth were measured. Resulting critical signal-to-noise ratios for pure tone measurements suggest manatees have relatively acute frequency filtering abilities compared with humans and other marine mammals. Signal characteristics such as repetition rate along with amplitude and frequency modulation may lower detection …

Self-Calibration Of Laser Tracking Measurement System With Planar Constraints, Shui Hu Motaghedi Jan 1999

Self-Calibration Of Laser Tracking Measurement System With Planar Constraints, Shui Hu Motaghedi

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 1990 - 1999

Laser tracking coordinate measuring machines have the potential of continuously measuring three dimensional target coordinates in a large workspace with a fast sampling rate and high accuracy. Proper calibration of a laser tracking measurement system is essential prior to use of such a device for metrology. In the absence of a more accurate instrument for system calibration, one has to rely on self-calibration strategies. In this dissertation, a kinematic model that describes not only the motion but also geometric variations of a multiple-beam laser tracking system was developed. The proposed model has the following features: (1) Target positions can be …

Silence And Sympathy: Race In The Early Short Fiction Of William Faulkner, Sheryl C. Gifford Jan 1999

Silence And Sympathy: Race In The Early Short Fiction Of William Faulkner, Sheryl C. Gifford

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 1990 - 1999

Much critical debate has surrounded William Faulkner's treatment of race relations in the South; indeed, it is difficult to believe that a white Southern male could transcend the psychosocial realities that led to racial divisions in the post-Civil War South. However, Faulkner, as the "well-endowed" Aristotelian poet, was able to involve himself in the emotions he sought to imitate, and thus was able to transcend racial issues in the compact fictive space he established. Intent upon mastering the intricacies of the short story, Faulkner, the self-admitted "failed poet," utilizes this genre to construct a subtle yet powerful critique of hypocritical …

Remote Laboratories For Distance Education, Sudeep Hari Anandapuram Jan 1999

Remote Laboratories For Distance Education, Sudeep Hari Anandapuram

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 1990 - 1999

In the past few years many US institutions of higher education have established virtual classrooms where learners pursue higher education via the Internet. The true challenge in Distance Education however remains; how do students perform real lab experiments--such as electronics over the Internet? To examine this challenge, a survey was conducted on over fifty Web-based educational environments, to assess the shortcomings of laboratory facilities currently available on the Internet. The survey revealed that contemporary labs touted to be virtual environments are merely software simulations. Hence the new idea of a facility that will realistically provide lab experiments over the Internet. …
